Due to Villarreal being relegated to the Segunda Division this means their B team are relegated to Segunda B.

There are still 4 games to go in the Segunda & nothing sorted as yet. Due to Villarreal B being relegated only the bottom 3 will join them.

The Segunda B finished last weekend & the play-offs start this weekend (all 2 legs).

Mirandes v Atletico Baleares
Cadiz v Real Madrid Castilla

The 2 winners of above games are promoted into the Segunda & then play each other to see who Segunda B champion is. The 2 losers join the 6 winners from the below games.

Albacete v Orihuela
Badalona v Tenerife
Amorebieta v Linense
Real Jaen v Ponferradina
Huracan Valencia v Lucena
Lugo v Eibar

The 8 teams then play in a semi-final round of 4 match-ups. The 4 winners then play in a final round of 2 match-ups & these 2 winners also get promoted.

The 16 teams which should be relegated to the Tercera (3 of the clubs pulled out mid-season so they may reform & start somewhere else?).

Celta B, Vecindario, Montaneros & Toledo. Burgos, Lemona, Gimnastica Segoviana & Arandina. Sporting Mahones (withdrew), Manacor, Gandia & Andorra. Ejido (withdrew), Sporting Villanueva Prom (withdrew), Caravaca & Roquetas.

The 4 16th placed teams have a play-off to see which other 2 teams are relagated. The 2 losers go down. The matches are:

There was a midweek round in the Segunda & all the relegation issues were settled with Cartagena & Alcoyano joining Gimnastic de Tarragona while Villarreal B go down due to the relegation of their 1st team.

At the weekend Deportiva La Coruna are confirmed as champions & promoted back to the the top tier. The 2nd automatic promotion place is between Celta 84 points (v Cordoba) & Valladolid 82 points (v Guadalajara). Whoever misses out will be in the play-offs for the last promotion place. Joining them will be either Alcorcon 70 (@ Numancia), Cordoba 70 (@ Celta), Hercules 69 (@ Huesca) & currently out of the play-off places is Almeria 67 (v Alcoyano)

I know you'll be able to explain why some groups have no team promoted and others have 2 or 3!

It's the format used, which England would do well to copy in promotion from Step 5 to 4.

The 18 champions play one home/away match and the 9 winners are promoted.

The 54 teams in positions 2, 3 and 4 play a home/away match reducing to 27.

The 9 loser champions join the 27 winners and 36 is whittled down to 9 promoted clubs over two more rounds of home/away ties.
