Population v Level Can't Post or Reply Privately

I did an analysis of clubs against population base 4 years ago.I used 4 different bases for population.

I've just looked at a listing of settlements (cities or towns?) in England and Wales by population (leaving out cities/towns in Scotland and Northern Ireland), limited to those with a population of 100,000 or more:

Rank Urban sub-area Population (2001 census)
1 London 7,172,091
2 Birmingham 970,892
3 Liverpool 469,017
4 Leeds 443,247
5 Sheffield 439,866
6 Bristol 420,556
7 Manchester 394,269
8 Leicester 330,574
9 Coventry 303,475
10 Kingston upon Hull 301,416
11 Bradford 293,717
12 Cardiff 292,150
13 Stoke-on-Trent 259,252
14 Wolverhampton 251,462
15 Nottingham 249,584
16 Plymouth 243,795
17 Southampton 234,224

58 Oldham 103,544
59 St Helens 102,629
60 Woking 101,127

* Several of the top 10 have not sustained a club in the top flight.
* Several of the top 20 have not sustained a club in the top two tiers.
* Several of list have not sustained a club in the top four tiers.

Compare that with Germany. As the population of Germany is about 1.47 times that of England and Wales, I'm just used the top 61, instead of using the benchmark of 100,000:

A list of Urban areas or economic travel to work area populations would be more interesting. City and Town boundaries vary greatly between actual towns and cities and those that have become unitary authorities - ie Welcome to Swindon, Peterborough, Northampton, (City of) Newport, etc signs are in open countryside, where as other places don't actually start until you have driven through 3 or 4 miles of built up area of adjoining towns and villages..

I'm adored in Augsburg

Interesting work well done!

Think we all knew Dudley was largest town without a Football League club but then they have numerous in surrounding area mainley West Brom, Walsall and Wolverhampton they also have Halesowen and Stourbridge in non league.

Poole is interesting as recently been succesful and looking to get promoted to Step 2 via play-offs another sport doing well in the area is Speedway and this is the same for another Town on the list Eastbourne.

Telford have always been a big name in non-league but never played in Football League due to the election process at time.

Slough have been in the Conference but since losing ground have found themselves at Step 4.

2 Cities who have played in Conference are Exeter and York.

Which of the top 10?

"Several of the top 20" - I can only see Dudley?

That's covered by the stuff I did 4 years ago. Looking at cities is a lot simpler, with, for the most part, only one or two professional clubs in each.

"sustained". Or perhaps you prefer "maintained".

Of the top 10, Leeds, Sheffield, Bristol, Leicester, Coventry and Kingston upon Hull currently don't have a club in the top flight, and at least a couple of those have not had even had a sustained period in the top flight over the past 20 years.

Of the top 20, Bradford, Plymouth and Dudley currently don't have a club at the top two levels - to be joined by Coventry.

Of the whole list, Dudley, Luton, Poole, Telford, York, Stockport, Slough, Gloucester, Eastbourne, Sutton Coldfield, St Helens and Woking currently don't have a club at the top four levels.

And of course Berlin will have no team in the Bundesliga next season.

As an aside, only 4 European capital cities have produced European Cup/Champions' League winners.

Hertha aren't completely gone yet. They get a last chance in the play off against Fortuna Düsseldorf. Two games which I suppose could well draw a combined attendance of over 100,000.

Doh!

I was in Berlin only yesterday and spent several days working through the magnificent Berlin "Fussball-Woche", and I still got it wrong.

I don't.

And neither do the Dutch. Although Den Haag is the "Seat of Government" of the Netherlands, Amsterdam is the Constitutional Capital of the country. Are we now telling the Dutch how to define their capital city? A cursory search has provided me with this. I'll try for a more thorough explanation in the morning.

Northwood, Threave Rovers, Arsenal, Watford, Rochdale, Rangers (the real ones, NOT qpr), queen of the south and a few others.
