Scottish Football restructure Can't Post or

A new all encompessing league is likely to be put to the clubs, called the National Football League, to take in clubs from both the Scottish Premier League and Scottish Football League. If it goes to open vote, then any club (even Celtic or Rangers) will be free not to join and league will go ahead without them.

What form will this league take will it be along the lines of the current format a few divisions of 10-12 teams or will divisions be merged to create a 16-18 team division...

Also what about clubs that dont join the National Football League, would it then become a rival league to the SPL and SFL???

Unless there is a big u-turn by the Premier League, FA, SFA and UEFA I can't see the Old Firm going anywhere else.

The biggest thing I think might come out of this (well, out of the current Rangers situation to be honest) is that the Old Firm lose power within the Scottish game. There isn't much chance of an 18-team league working with regard to TV contracts etc at the level the Old Firm want them but the rest of the clubs without them might as well go to 18. If the Old Firm lose some power they might just have to go with the flow.

I'm interested to see where it goes although I'm not holding my breath that anything will come of it though.

I took this as a threat by the SFA that Rangers and Celtic must agree to rule changes on voting i.e the 11/1 to 9/3. In essence, if they don't the remaining ten will resign from the SPL and join forces with SFL as part of the new national league. It was very interesting wording that the SFA said we'd ask the teams to join and if two or three choose not to, that is up to them. You don't need to be Sherlock Holmes to realise they were referring to the old firm and not East Stirling and Stenhousemuir!

The only wrinkle might be if the SPL ten resign, but some of the SFL 1 teams (Falkirk, Dundee, Partick etc) side with Rangers and Celtic. Could get very messy.

In the event that all teams agree to join the SNL would think they'd keep the division sizes the same in the short term and then discuss arrangements to increase the Premier to 14 or 16 teams in the future.

I guess the SFA nominate the teams that Qualify for Europe, so would imagine to qualify for Champions League in the future Rangers and Celtic would need to be in the SFA sanctioned competitions.

Surely TOF will be welcomed with open arms by the PL. A good excuse to get rid of annoying little teams like Wigan

That should never be allowed to happen, if Ran-Tic* are to come south of the border, then they should be forced to do it through the National League System...

Remember one thing, Rangers and Celtic need the Premier League more than we need and I suspect it will stay that way for a long time yet

*Ran-Tic is how a mate of mine referred to the Old Firm, I thought it was amusing(I am easily amused)

I have been wondering for a while, why there is no promotion/relegation between the Football League 3 in Scotland and the lower levels?

If they opened the SFL up to applications only two or three teams would want in.

The big non-league clubs have no interest at all in joining the moribund Division Three.

Under the current system no they don't - is there really any club bar Spartans that would be interested as things stand?

But if there were promotion / relegation at the end of every season, would that change how the current non league clubs feel? For instance, Forres Mechanics have won this season's Highland League. They are not a club who would be very likely to apply for membership in the SFL as currently constituted, but would they actually decline promotion if promotion were automatically available to the Highland League winners?

Last time there was a place up for grabs at least five teams applied with Annan getting it. From memory, Cove, Spartans and Edinburgh City were amongst them. Suspect a few more of the highland league teams would be interested, particularly if they split Div 2 into north / south.
