Thanks Tim,

Do you know if the pitch was on the field behind where the Abbey is (by the play ground) or was it where the new housing is near the road?

The old ground was situated up against the wall of the back gardens opposite the Rural Museum.
The footings for the grandstand can still be seen although the pitch now has trees on it.
My History of non League Football Grounds shows a before and after picture taken from the same spot which shows the exact spot.
Sadly the current ground is a disgrace to the town.

If you drive past on your way to the Tor you can see the playground from the roadside with the tree lined park behind this which is where I believe the pitch was located. Sadly I didn't get the chance to see a game here in the shadow of the fantastic Tor but did see it when the old wooden stand was still in existence. Completely on the other side of town, Abbey Moor is I think still an operating greyhound track too but have watched a few Western League games at this drab venue.

The greyhounds are now long gone leaving what was, at Christmas when I went last, a semi-derelict stadium with overgrown brickwork lying in piles, a pitch which is not even roped off, despite their place in the Somerset County League and a shut clubhouse.
Very sad but inevitable with Wells City and Street either side of them having undergone a revival in the last 20 years while Glastonbury went the other way.

You are right about the playground...the old pitch was right behind it.

Sad indeed now the 'noisy neighbours' are doing better and that Glastonbury have fallen upon hard times. Almost sounds like their place at step 7 is down to past reputation of being Western League winners just over 40 years ago and having had a certain Paul Randall starting out there before an illustrious career at Rovers, Stoke and Yeovil. I guess a move out of town isn't always a proven success story.

Now not wishing to stereotype (much!) but no surprise they cant get much of a following these days when the town is often full of the flower power merchants. At least the Tor is still worth a visit for burning off those excess calories though!
