Jazz

I've tried and tried some more to get it but I just can't.

There's always an overweight bloke at the piano with a name
like Jellyroll, sweating so profusely that he could help with
the water shortage and conjuring up a tune(?), that could
quite easily be bettered by a three-year-old with learning difficulties.

Then there's your Afro-American diva, who aspires to be
Pearl Bailey but always looks like Aretha Franklin.
And boy do they sing soooooo slow. In fact if they went
any slower, they would be singing backwards, with songs like
'Paul is Dead' (it's an Easter Egg on the Abbey Road DVD).

In you go Jazz, along with all you subtle nuances
and never darken my airwaves again....

I agree with you DQ.

Eastenders

This is a programme that has an unhealthy influence on society, our youngsters in particular, and has taught a whole generation that the way to conduct a relationship is to scream at each other. Judging from the noise emanating from our girls rooms when they watch it online (it's more or less banned in the living room) the voices give the impression that most of the characters fall into the category of 'chav' and have all the moral fibre of Bashar Al-Assad.

Let me be clear about this. I don't like soap operas and never have. But it seems to me that since this particular piece of crap has been running there has been an increasing tendency for soap operas of all kinds to include crime, sex and violence as a staple part of the programme almost as a default position. This was never the case before Eastenders hit our screens.

In my view the programme should at least be broadcast after the watershed, which incidentally I believe is far too early and should be moved to 23:00.

If I had my way I'd ban the damn thing completely. Mad

Re: [UKPunk] Room 101 [In reply to] Can't Post or

It is strange now we have many so called entertainement TV stations to choose from the total hours of good quality TV is less than when we had 3 or 4.

Most should be consigned to Room 101, starting with ITV1, which compared with ITV (ATV in my case) from the 1970's is not even a shadow of it's former self.

BBC4 should replace ITV1

It's sad that most factual programmes are pushed to the margins these days. I think it says something about our society that if you want to learn anything worthwhile you have to go looking for it, whereas if you want to avoid mind numbing, spirit crushing pap it's a struggle to get away from it. Unsure

Hush your mouth.

No musical medium which produced Stephane Grappelli deserves to go into Room 101.

Grappelli is sans pareil. The greatest musician to walk this earth. And to think c1970 I actually saw him in a small hall in Stirlingshire.

It's as close as you'll get to a singing violin:

Reminds me of a funny tale which occurred in a celebrated music pub called McGrory's in Culdaff, County Donegal. The usual impromptu session started and a tourist asked if they'd mind if he joined in. Good man yourself, they said, so he did. And Yehudi Menuhin thus had a whale of a time with the jigs and reels etc.
When he'd had enough, on all levels by all accounts, the MC asked his name so the crowd could give him a good Donegal send-off. "A big hand for Hughie McMenamin, everyone. Hughie McMenamin" Cool

He came back in a more formal capacity to perform again, as has Grappelli and Earl Scruggs. But then the county has a bit of history with the old music, having produced Rory Gallagher, Danny Hutton of Three Dog Night, Altan, Clannad and therefore Enya. As well as, ahem, Daniel O'Donnell........Crazy
If you're ever in the area, it's a fantastic pub with chowder and seafood to die for, and the scenery is jaw-dropping.

My friend, don't think I haven't tried but
listening buds just won't get attuned.
When I used to work on the Express, we
used to frequent a Jazz Cafe/Club at the
back of Southwark Street that opened to
an hour that was wife threatening...

It was a fantastic place - a total throw back
to the 30s - smoke filled with bottles covered
in candle wax (not that kind of club), free pour
spirits...until the music started.

A work colleague once said about 4.30am 'this
is music to die for' to which I replied...
'that can be arranged'.

I've given jazz a go. Sometimes it works for me. Sometimes it doesn't.
I'm not up with all the multitude of sub-genres for jazz as I'm more into punk and alternative music but stuff like this gives me a semi-on (it helps when the singer's a babe and a half): http://youtu.be/QjWWH8BidLM

But stuff like X Songs by Pat Metheny, who's a great musician when he tries, is unlistenable: http://youtu.be/d66Ytt2g7ns

That's the second time you've posted about Seamus Moore, of whom I'd fortunately never heard before. From Kilkenny you see.

If Ireland were a person, with Donegal the westward-looking face, Kilkenny would be close to the anus.
