Messi 5 Can't Post or Reply Privately

As usual the ITV peeps seem to forget that there was any football before the Champions League - which is really just the European Cup (well it must be as they still always name check Real's earlier triumphs in the Cup). Anyway this means that Messi's 5 goals is not the first such feat. For example Ipswich Town's Ray Crawford scored 5 in his side's 10-0 win over Floriane (Malta) in 1962-3. I'm sure sure there must be other 5s (or even large individual hauls).

Messi is the 11th, first in the newly named competition.
But without a doubt the only one against decent oppposition and at such a late stage in the competition.

Does someone else hold a tie aggregate record? (Say, 4 & 3 or 4)

(Cup Winners Cup, hence why not in the earlier list). Was 21-0 the highest two legged score in the three European competitions, as were?

Given that we can see every minute that Messi plays, compared with the good stuff that's shown of Maradona, Pele and other heroes of days gone by, I think he's the best I've ever seen as very rarely does he appear to have a poor game. The sheer joy of being so good is also evident and long may he grace our pitches and screens. There is no other player who takes the breath away so often and his goalscoring the other night was sensational.

I am an old cynic when it comes to top players as most are totally overated by the media etc. Probably the best player I have seen is Maradonna but at 24 Messi is certainly close and has the potential to be rated the greatest of all time IMO. It is a long time since I have seen One player who looks so exciting most of the time.
Time will tell if he fulfils his full potential but he is certainly the best player in the world today by a long way. Smile

And quite rightly too in my view.

George Best was an amazing footballer, but could never have aspired to win the World Cup as he came from a small country.
Champions League is open to any footballer who chooses (and is good enough) to play in a European League

Sporting Lisbon beat Apoel Nicosia 16-1 in one match in 1963-64 (I'm not sure if there was a second leg in those days) which still stands as the record for one match. Not sure about who scored the goals but it's amazing to think that in 2012, Apoel have just reached the quarter finals of the Champions League!

I'm with Matty on this. The 'one of us is Champions' League has become this
all consuming God, for which nothing else matters, where the Holy Grail
is going for a fourth-place finish in the table.

The FA Cup matters not a jot to most these days and although players of the
winning side still gambol around Wembley like new born kangaroos, the media
have placed it [FA Cup] on a similar par to the Europa League.

Many of us of a certain age would quite happily support Celtic, Manchester United
and even Liverpool in the early years and want them to win the EC but sad to say, I
will be more than delighted if there are no so-called 'English' clubs are left in either
European competition come this time next week.

Unless a benefactor who possesses wealth of a dubious origin comes knocking,
there will be realistically, 15 PL clubs who will not have a cat in hell's chance of
    winning a trophy every season.
Most top-flight fans pay their season ticket money for what...to reach 40 points, a
decent FA/League Cup run maybe, or a chance of going to Lithuania or Wales in early July?

People who reviled the birth of the Premier League were sneered at from upon high
and were fed this mess of pottage as to how wonderful it would be for English football...
I await its wonders with baited breath and nothing would give me more pleasure than
to see Sky's play thing implode.

When you've got 'em by the balls, their hearts and minds will follow.

Excellent post DQ. I am of that certain age and I did cheer on Liverpool, Celtic et al (with the obvious exception of that lot down the road). And like you I can't wait for all of them to be out. In fact, I'd have a quiet chuckle if english clubs performed so badly for a few years that our co-efficient rating (or whatever it is that decides the number of clubs from any one country that can enter the Champions League) was so weak that we lost a couple of entries.

Thats making a big assumption that any of your nearest rivals Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool or Newcastle show some sort of consistancy between now and the end of the season to overturn Tottenhams lead, something all 4 have failed to do so far Crazy

Arsenal and Chelsea are only 4 points behind us with 11 and 10 games to go respectively. I fully expect Arsenal to beat Newcastle tonight which will leave them 1 point behind us. We have to go to Chelsea on 24th March and now that they've got rid of AVB I think they'll beat us which will leave them only one point behind and I think they'll pick up enough points in the run in to overhaul us.

This is always the worst part of the season for us. We almost always choke anough points away to 'just' miss out on a Champions League or other european slot (remember pizzagate?)

I would love for Spurs to prove me wrong and finish third, but I won't be putting any money on it. Unsure
