I've heard of a pub game called 'shut the box'. Is that related to a duke box?

Your just a grumpy old git Bazza.... Cool

...but not far wrong though.

My local has it sussed now. Got a new bloke in there running it
and all the old crowd have come back, therefore ousting the little
shits that had once frequented it.
Ergo, lots of blokes fast approaching their Diamond jubilee [still acting
eighteen - including yours truly] and the multi-media music thingy is constantly
blasting out old rock hits and album tracks from the late 60s and early 70s.
Dart board in the public bar, for those who want it and no pool table.
The boss keeps an endless supply of Rioja in the fridge for me, even though
it is a bit on the pricey side but hey, worth the extra.
Stays open late until the last train arrives, normally about 1am on
a Friday and Saturday but getting too old for the late shift these days.
Can't remember the last time I was in a pub when last orders was rung.

The thing that spoils a lot of pubs for me are the pretentious know-it-alls sipping their bloody chilled red Rioja.

Had to turn on signatures to check on me spellin. What a bloody state , some peoples are like life stories !

I think "Decent Food" (not just pub grub) criteria rules out Wetherspoons out as isn't that exactly what they serve.

Home Cooked food is always a must to be a decent pub.

I think the food in Wetherspoons is excellent. Apart from being unlucky occasionally, it's cheap enough, from a varied menu & filling & tasty enough.

If that's how you like your Harry Ramsden frozen fish & chips, microwaved Lasagne, or Argentinian Steaks fair play to you. It's just in a Good Pub (that's what this thread is about[?]) it's not the way I'd expect the food to be prepared.

Certainly not pretentious..don't do all that sniffing and swilling around the glass thing.
The thing I hate in any pub is a dippy tart behind the jump bawling out... "ice, in red wine?"
My responses have been somewhat varied.

Did I mention an age limit? Wink I was in a pub this afternoon and some kid aged about 10-11 was throwing a ball and bouncing it off the bar. neither His parents or the Bar Staff said a word. Annoying and before anyone asks No I did not say anything basically because of all the Pikies in there. I drank up and left.

And that is the problem. It's not so much the kids in the pub as the parents who are supposed to be looking after them. It's simple. If they can't behave you take them home. Unfortunately too many parents couldn't give a toss if they're annoying other punters as long as they're left alone to enjoy their drink.

I also don't blame you for not saying anything Barry. Chances are the parents will get stroppy with you and you just know that when kids are involved you're always on a loser even when you're right.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As for what makes a good pub, no bloody music!! I love music as much as the next person, but if I wanted to go out to a pub to listen to it I'd go where I know there's going to be a live band. Besides, almost every pub I've ever been in that plays music over speakers plays little more than pop pap. I hear enough of that crap about five seconds before I yell up the stairs to tell my girls to shut their bedroom doors!!
Generally, when I go out for a drink it's to chat to friends or watch football. The last thing I want is to be resorting to sign language in order to communicate with my companions.
