I've found Virgin Trains to be abysmal and would much rather use Chiltern or London Midland between London and Birmingham even though they are slower.

They're punctual when I use them but Cross Country use rolling stock that is not fit for purpose. They use 4-car Voyager sets between some of Britain's biggest cities. There is usually someone having to stand and that is on off-peak services! Having said that Trans Pennine cross Pennine route between Manchester and Leeds is served by some brand new sets which are just 3 cars each. Commuter trains on inter city routes.

Grounds: 1151. Last New Ground: St Francis Xavier School, Liverpool. Games since 0-0: 212

The three-coach thing is because the Northern and TPE franchises were let on a 'no-growth' basisBlush. TPE is NOT and never has been, an 'Inter-City' route, even in BR days. The stock for their services is FAR better than the stuff which NR have to use; I know, I've used both.

It's worth pointing out that the three-coach thing is a leftover from BR, who introduced this style in the late 80s/early 90s to replace 4-coach (by then) loco-hauled trains. It's also worth pointing out that between Liverpool and Leeds, the service was only hourly. The stopping sevices had also just about disappeared by then; now, between Manchester and Leeds, there are stopping trains hourly, change at Huddersfield, dive into The GroveSmile, and the TPE trains run at 4 per hour.

Agreed. I've made many train journeys over the last few years and in my experience NXEA have caused me far more delays and cancellations than any other train company.

While we're on the subject, can someone 'in the know' please explain to me why NXEA seem to have been working on the same parts of the line (for example between Ilford and Ingatestone) at weekends for the last 20 plus years?

It is actually Network Rail that is responsible for work on the line, you can't blame NXEA for that I'm afraid.

Not long ago you were demanding that a post from Gareth, in which he expressed a dislike of German folk, be removed.

Yet here you are making wild allegations against another group of people.

Re: [garethwrexy] Worst train company [In reply to] Can't Post or Reply Privately

Virgin Cross Country trains by a long shot. No idea whether Cross Country trains are the same company but a tax dodge and thanks to several problems with Virgin X Country I have so far avoided using the new version.

No leg room whatsoever in normal class and at 5ft 9 I'm pretty average height.

Due to running stupidly late from Manchester once train got cancelled at Leamington and we were left to our own devices about getting home from there with no prior warnings beforehand.

Splashed out once for 1st class to Sheffield and whilst I got the leg room there was no sign of the free tea and coffee.

Around here - yes Connex were bad but with just 3 routes it was only the Victoria-Southampton route that was always late.

South West Trains - Like all trains overpriced but unlike the others, no chance of picking up cheaper Apex tickets or whatever they're called this week if you book early enough.

Anyone with any queries or need any help planning a trip to Fareham Town FC - give me a bell.

Any pre 1979-80 Fareham Town programmes wanted plus any further memorabilia/press etc.

Check out the clubs twitter page at www.twitter.com/farehamtownfc

Apparently cross country trains have improved since Virgin lost the franchise, I suppose they couldn't have got much worse!

Connex were abysmal on every service they ran here in Kent and there was an immediate improvement when they lost the franchise.
