People who write "would of" instead of would've should be thrown off the forum and then a very high cliff. Discuss...

That would be too good for them. I had similar thoughts whilst reading a job application earlier today. It's "would have" - how difficult is that for these idiots?

MisterTwoU must sympathise. Though he does have the advantage of spellcheckers that can miraculously change homophones to the intended meaning...

"Nett", indeed...

But what is worse, on job applications I have had to read, is when they can't even spell their address correctly !

This current generation also seem to have a problem with pronounciations as in alstation (alsatian) and chimley (chimney). Crazy

Its not spelling mistakes that people get uppity about - its sentences that don't make sense (or ones that you have to re-read 4 times before understanding) due to lack of punctuation (full stops and commas are two basic but wonderful inventions), and placing words in sentences that make no sense - like of when it should be have!

For those of us who still post from your PC/laptop there is no excuse for poor spelling. All you need is to install a Dictionary plug-in to your browser and it checks your spelling as you type and highlights any errors. I have one installed for both Firefox and I.E. Not having progressed to a Smart-Phone myself yet I'm not sure how easy it is but if Google have a dictionary for Chrome, I'm damn sure they'll have one for their mobile browser.

As for grammar there are plug-ins available I just haven't had the need to check any of them out yet.

I must confess that I always let out a silent scream when faced with some using the pseudo verb 'to of'. And not to be too picky but isn't someone, human or canine who originates from Alsace, an alsatian?

People who care more about how something's said (or written) than what's being said (or written) should be the ones thrown off the cliff in my opinion.

As Sarumio suggested the occasional spelling mistake is not a big deal but a bit of punctuation and upper/lower case as appropriate does make it so much easier to understand exactly what is being written.

Maybe we shouldn't be too harsh with people on here who spell words incorrectly. Walk around Clacton and you'll find businesses who display words with the wrong spellings. For example, there's a grocer in town who writes carrot's instead of carrots! Crazy

You'd have thought businesses would take a bit of care over how they present themselves. Unsure

Re: [LondonBuck] Would of! [In reply to] Can't Post or Reply Privately

It's much easier to mis-spell a word on the computer that with pen and paper. Spell checkers won't pick up everything, e.g. missing the "h" from "than". I find grammar checkers to me overly picky and old-fashioned and tend to ignore them. They all seem to struggle with the subjunctive case and count nouns. I think we're all guilty of not bothering to use the spell-checker and typing things like "fibe-mil" (5-0). We've probably all made posts which are unclear and could benefit from the odd comma. I'm not really a pedantic person. But..... "Would of"!!!!! Sorry too much punctuation.
