When did fans start wearing their clubs shirts to games. Can't Post or Reply Privately

Question yesterday in one of the National newspapers.

I can remember vaguely in the late 1970's or early 80's and it was only the odd one or two at home games only and nothing like it is today. I can't recall anyone wearing their club shirt at an away game which probably at the time may not have been advisable.

I owned a home shirt of my club Coventry City, but not that horrible chocolate effort away kit from that era. It never even crossed my mind at that time to wear the shirt at home games as it wasn't the norm (still I think scarves and bobblehats back then).

First Brentford shirt I purchased was made by Bukta, about 1975 from the local sports shop in Brentford, Arnolds who supplied the kit to the football club. The first shirt the club sold was when they were sponsored for the First time by DHL about 1980 and the club realised they could make money selling the shirts rather than Arnolds. Must have made a fortune selling them in the 30 years since then.

My dad bought me a Southampton kit (no one could ever explain why as we have no connection to the town or the team) when I was about 4. After that I lived in the US until I was about 8. I think I must've been about 10 when I got an Arsenal goalkeeper's jersey for my birthday in 1987. That was pretty special as you could only get them in the shop at Finsbury Park station which made way for the World of Sport. I remember seeing ads in Shoot! magazine for all sorts of kits though. The thing that struck me was that the English ones all changed every 2 years while Milan, Barcelona, Bayern etc seemed to stay the same forever.

Bayern Munich have worn a wide variety of different home kits over the last few years, often changing the colours drastically, whilst Barcelona have also changed their kit, one year they wore blue and red halves rather than stripes, they have also used navy instead of ordinary blue and added bits of yellow for no apparent reason. One season they wore a different kit for Champions League games.

Indeed, but this has all happened in the last 15 years. Up to about 1995 they didn't change at all. Bayern wore the same red adidas kit sponsored by Opel for years on end, and Barca wore their old thick maroon and blue stripes with blue shorts.

Since then the two clubs have both changed as often as any English club.

Got my first replica Swindon shirt in about 1980. This being the first one that ever had a badge on it, prior to that the nearest you could get was just similar in colour and design. That one had the badge but the sponsor's name was missing, I think it was ISIS at the time.

Have rarely worn a shirt to a Swindon game, twice to Wembley (1990, 1993) and not many other occasions (there must be some, but cannot think of them).

Sometimes have worn a Chippenham, or a foreign shirt to a game.

I was happily wearing my Baggies shirt in 1978-79, but not at certain away grounds.... no sponsor's name, had to buy the badge separately and ask my mum to sew it on.

I'm glad I've never seen Garrincha's Dog minus shirt at a Swindon game. Or any game, come to that.

The first time I saw adults wearing replica shirts was when Newcastle Utd visited for an FA Cup 5th round tie in 1974. General opinion in the home end was that they looked like a bunch of humbugs Cool

My first proper replica Portsmouth shirt as a kid would have been about 1980-81 season, but even then I didn't wear it to matches (my mum would have regarded it as nowhere near warm enough clothing). Certainly it was only children under the age of about 13 among the rare wearers. The first match I can remember a large number of people turning up in replica shirts was the 1992 FA Cup semi-final v. Liverpool at Highbury, after which it seemed to become the norm at Pompey matches.

Televised matches I watched where a huge number of replica shirts seemed to first be noticable would probably have to include the Wednesday v. United semi-final at Wembley in 1993 when most of Sheffield turned up. And the other that sticks in the mind is the 1997 FA Cup final, by which time Premiership commercialism had fully taken hold: I remember Ruud Gullit commenting on the fact that almost every Middlesbro fan was in a team shirt, and how such a thing simply would never happen in the Netherlands.

My first Orient replica shirt was circa 1981/82. I’ve still got it – it’s a little tight now, it must have shrunk. But I remember that it was a real novelty, obtained from a sportswear shop in Walthamstow who had obtained a very small number from the factory where they were made for the club. And the club seriously frowned upon the whole thing, especially as these ‘dodgy’ shirts were lacking the sponsor’s logo. It was probably around 1988 before the club realised that there was money to be made and shirts started appearing in the club shop – just kiddies sizes at first I think. The ‘Soccer Scene’ shop in Soho’s Carnaby Street had adult sizes before the Orient Club Shop did, or so I think I remember. The original owner of Soccer Scene was a big Orient fan, and it was always good to go in there and see the Orient kit in pride of place alongside the shirts of Barcelona and Bayern Munich and Man Utd and so on. I don’t think it was until the mid-1990s though that the wearing of replica shirts became commonplace.

The first Oxford United replica shirts I can remember was either 75/6 or 76/7 when they were Blue and Yellow stripes. The first ones with badges were as our friend from down the A420 said in the early 80's. Both Oxford and Swindon had their strips supplied by the same company, Oxford had a Red away shirt which was indentical to Swindon's home shirt except for the badge, I can't remember if Swindon had a Yellow away shirt or not. The supplier was not a well known company and the quality was not good, a Primark type replica shirts.

Dulwich Hamlet...the first ones sold were 1988/89.

It was earlier than that. I had one from around 1984/5 - royal blue with pink v-neck collar and shoulder flashes, sponsored by "Gordon's Garage". It was definitely a "replica", for which someone took individual orders at the time - not one of the old team shirts that were handed around when the old ground closed and kit room was emptied. I remember wearing it for training nights with the team I used to play for in 1985/6, although i can't really recall wearing it to Hamlet games.

I remember school mates wearing replica shirts when I was at Goodrich Road Infants School from 1971-3, but in those days people only seemed to wear them for actually playing football. Our class teacher's boyfriend/fiance was a referee, and I remember one afternoon we all got dressed in our football kits and were taken down to Dulwich Park where he "refereed" us playing a match. It was the first time I felt I was playing "proper football" on a muddy pitch with a big leather ball, and someone actually organising it, as opposed to just kicking tennis balls or "flydo" balls around in the playground. I remember some of the kids having Arsenal or Chelsea shirts, which I think had badges on them. These were the classic plain, round-necked designs from the early 70's. I had a generic red shirt with round white collar, as red was my favourite colour. I remember a sports shop near where I lived that sold unbadged "Toffs" style shirts, and you could buy separate cloth badges for some clubs and get your mum to sew them onto a shirt for you. Everything was kept in drawers behind a counter and you had to ask to look at them, rather than everything being hung up on display like it is now. A green & black striped shirt (worn by Coventry City as an away kit at the time) seemed particularly exotic. I expect most of their sales were to schools and amateur teams for playing use, so not really "replicas" as such.

To return to the original question, I can't recall significant numbers of supporters wearing replicas to watch matches until the start of the Sky TV / Premier League era in the early 90's.

First kits I had was Sunderland Home and Away 89-90, made by Hummell and Sponsored by Vaux, I think they had those kits through the 1990-91 1st Division Campaign as well, as I remember they played in a white away kit in the 1992 Cup Final...

As I have never supported one team loyally, I have had any amount of football tops over the years, simply because I liked the tops, just to try and name a few tops I have had

Arsenal
Chelsea
Leeds
Man City
West Ham
Ireland
Northern Ireland
Italy
Argentina
Hartlepool
Darlington
Aston Villa
St Johnstone
Sunderland
Newcastle
Rangers
Celtic
Millwall
Croatia
Real Madrid
LA Galaxy
England

The St Johnstone top is probably the most unusual shirt I ever had, I swapped with a lad from Perth on holiday, an ardent Scottish Nationalist and I managed to talk him into swapping for my long sleeved double sided England Shirt and I even managed get him to wear it as well...

People have raised eyebrows in the past when I have been seen walking round in a Rangers or Sunderland Shirt one day and a Celtic or Newcastle one the next...but I just love football shirts

I was a bit like that as ayoungster myself. My mother is a Mancunian; as already stated I had a red shirt (which I was told was "Manchester United") but also a sky blue shirt, with Manchester City badge sewn on (in the middle of the chest as per the c.1975 version, and a QPR shirt after they narrowly failed to win the League in 1976; and an orange "Adidas" Netherlands shirt (with black sleeve stripes and badge) shortly afterwards. The first two World Cups I remember are 1974 & 1978, neither of which included England, so Netherlands were my "adopted" team. I just had shirts for teams I liked watching on television.

My first was a Kidderminster Harriers home shirt circa 1987. It came with a seperate TSB logo (the club's then sponsors) which you had to sew on. Cheapskates.

I also bought the Brighton away shirt from 1990-91 (I had a soft spot for them) which was retrospectively vile.

Without the benefit of your memory, Richard, you are right, as always. The Gordons Garage one was a Hamlet replica.

With regard to replicas of other clubs, I have a few, but don't collect them, just buy the ones I like.

'Odd looks' wearing other teams shirts? In 2004 the Hamlet Supporters Team played in an open competition in Rimini. Four of us went a week early, we arrived in Naples, & worked our way up the country, being tourists for a week. In Rome we went to the Vatican, two of my mates wore a Rangers home shirt, & the orange away one! The 'foreign' tourists didn't bat an eyelid, but they got some nasty 'paddingtons' from Irish & Uk catholic tourists! ;-)
