Subbuteo Can't Post or Reply Privately

I am having a night of reminiscence and came across this site: http://www.subbuteo365.com/mystadium.htm

How do the rest of you feel about the old green/yellow stands versus the new red/blue ones?

And, needless to say, anything else you have to say about the (small) beautiful game...

Just vaguely remember an edition of viz

all the Arsenal team with their hands up appealing for offside
Ormondroyd (spelling?ex Bradford and Derby?) as floodlights
an already broken Bryan Robson
and a Souness - leg out stretched and studs up

personally I smashed up my Argentina team after the hand of god - my youth team reached a five a side final roundabout then - played at Moorways in Derby - which some might know - and got booed by all the other kids (Falklands time for the young uns) we won and were supposed to meet players and have a kick around on the pitch etc at the Baseball Ground (Derbys former home for the young uns) but Peter Taylor took over the week before this was supposed to happen and barred us so just got tickets to the most boring 0-0 draw ever against Bolton, back passes were allowed at this time (for the young uns) and they were the closest any side came scoring
also had Falkirk - because it was a black kit, which I did nt think was allowed (referrees wore black at his time - for the young uns)

Ahh... memories.

I gave all my Subbuteo stuff to a mate I used to play it with as he had kids and I didn't. We used to stop up til all hours playing various tournaments (Leagues with promotion and relegation, FA Cups, League Cups, World Cups, European Championships). I've still got the old folders and school exercise books with all the results in.

I believe they support Tranmere Rovers, Hoddy. I heard a story that during the 1980's they turned down an opportunity to appear on Top Of The Pops to perform The Trumpton Riots as Tranmere were at home on the day of the recording. I Don't know if that's true though.

No it is not true. They turned down The Tube which was recorded on Friday nights which is when Tranmere played. The Tube also offered to helicopter them to the football in time for the second half.

From the horse's mouth:

"The popular version of events suggests that Channel Four actually offered to fly the band by helicopter from Newcastle (where The Tube was recorded) to Prenton Park so that they could make the game.

According to Nigel, “They did genuinely offer the helicopter but it would only have got us to the ground at half-time and not being ones for a fuss we weren’t particularly sold on the idea of what may have been perceived as the antics of ‘Big Time Charlies’. The perhaps surprising though pleasant footnote to it all is that we won the game – against Scunthorpe Utd – with what in those days was a fairly desperate side. By the way, it was only me and [bass player] Neil Crossley who went to the match. The others weren’t arsed about football much.”"

http://www.sabotagetimes.com/...lf-man-half-biscuit/

There's also a story that, when asked why the band don't sing about Tranmere Rovers, Nigel replied "we don't do love songs".

Ah yes, I had exercise books full of results and tables. I also drew pictures of all the different teams and their colours. As one of my other past times was making and then painting model aeroplanes, I had lots of little tins of paint with which I could create new kits as and when it took my fancy. I even remember painting the blue outline of the 'JVC' on the 1989-91 Arsenal kit :)

Re: [cope1] Subbuteo [In reply to] Can't Post or Reply Privately

I got bored with yellow/black stripes / white (supposedly Juventus (and Barnet)) which got converted to white/sky blue but must have liked 'cos "Spain" later got changed to black/gold stripes /black (using masking tape to aid doing the stripes). Colours actually depended on the tins available in Dad's shed hence "Chelsea" ended up as all red (front door) and the remains of the original red/white and blue/white (from ca 1963) combined with brown and white hoops / white (Coventry Park Rangers ??). They are still - 40 + years later, in a trunk in the loft. I suspect they would be far more valuable unchanged (an unplayed with) in pristine boxes, but as with James Bond golden Aston Martin DB5 (cost 9s 11d - value at auction £ 330) as a child I tended to the view toys were for playing with - robustly.

I tippexed the hair of a player in my Portsmouth subbuteo team so he'd look like Alan Biley.

I have to say, for all my enthusiasm, I rarely actually got round to playing subbuteo. I enjoyed setting it all up and painting the players (and the ball!) so much that the game itself was a bit of a let down!

Actually me too cope1 - diving around in the garden or on the common was more like the real thing - and painting the players - creating a stadium (baize on a large piece of hardboard that, marking out the pitch - building a stand out of lego) was far more fun [and of course I wa spretty crap at Subbuteo too].
