Yes it's relatively simple to explain. It's just two different definitions of a 'unique' visitor ie the amount of time that needs to elapse between pageloads for a pageload to be considered part of a new 'unique' visit.
With StatCounter it is set at one hour.... so for anybody leaving the site and coming back two hours later that would be counted as a new 'unique' visit even though it's actually the same person. The Hit List only counts the same person once every 24 hours as 'unique'.
The total pageviews are not too dissimilar between the two although the Hit List tends to be slightly lower as it relies on the button image to load to count the 'hit' so if someone navigates quickly away from a page that hit may be missed.
These third party counters are never going to be totally accurate. The only truly accurate way of measuring traffic is through accessing the server stats but there is not really any way to accurately measure how much of that traffic is 'unique' even if there was a standard definition of the term.
