Main Site - improvement suggestions Quote | Reply or Reply Privately

We have the main site online now. It's not perfect I know but it's online and hopefully you guys, the football community will make it work.

I have several ideas already to make it better:

Search facility... by club or by league, fixtures / results by date
Split league tables into Home and Away records
League tables display promotion/play off and relegation places
Change display of fixtures / results to current month only with option to choose other months, it saves having one long list of fixtures / results
'Last Updated - [Date]' on each league
Java option so that third party sites can embed our tables into their own sites

for Editors: home teams sorted alphabetically in drop down boxes
for Editors: sort display of fixtures by date then by league then alphabetically
remove attendance stats tables from leagues that do not issue attendances
add goal difference column to the league table

If you have any other constuctive criticism or suggestions for improvements please post them here

Thansk

Link to forum should open either in a new tab or new window, else you will lose visitors

When scrolling down a division page, using my mouse wheel, if the mouse cursor eventually goes over the map (which it always does), rather than scroll the page it zooms out ( alittle annoying)

NO! NO! NO!

This sort of behaviour from a site irritates me greatly. If I want a new tab/window (and it's very rare that I do) I can force it to open it in one, I don't want sites making that decision for me.

Two things

a) Background colours for league table lines need to be a whole lot (i.e. not just a little) lighter. I have difficiulty reading the text on the lighter of the two shades of blue used, let alone the darker one.

b) Result "grids" would be a very good addition.

Thanks for putting all this together, I appreciate the amount of work that has gone into it and wish the site well for the forthcoming season.

Thanks

The forum is on the same domain so it doesn't lose visitors. What I will do shortly is add a much more prominent link from the forum back to the main site. The forum is a part of the site, it isn't a separate entity.

I can't really do much about the map I don't think. It's a interactive map so if you scroll with the cursor on it then it's going to zoom.

Cheers for the feedback.

In the "Others" menu could the leagues be arranged under country headings rather than in strict alphabetical order regardless of country as they are at present? When the Scottish junior tables go up could you subdivide Scotland under "Juniors" and "Seniors" headings?

One page that has a link to every division on the site would be useful (this would certainly be a page I would bookmark).

Totally agree with Richard Rundle.

Please make all links from nonleaguematters just that, no new tabs/windows.

There again I'm in the opposite camp. If I click on a link there's more than a good chance I want the original page to remain open as well, so "New Tab" please!!!

The solution would be a closer integration between main site and forum if you decide that new tab/window isn't going to happen.

As an experienced developer and tester, I have always prefered the new tab/window, but without a standard menu bar between the two, I would say your options are limited.

Clicking the link as is, brings you to a forum that shows no likeness or connection back to the 'main site' for many they will be seen as two seperate entities.

But hey, what would I know, only been developing websites for 14 years :)

If that's what you want. right click on the link and select "Open Link in New Tab" or "Open Link In New Window" (in Firefox anyway, I'm 99.999% sure there is a similary function in Internet Explorer)

And I.E. and Chrome. That's what I usually do, but it would be great if all links automatically opened in a new tab.

Re: Main Site - improvement suggestions [In reply to] Quote | Reply or Reply Privately

@ Richard Rundle... I will add making the background table colours a little more pastel to the list. I haven't asked how practical adding results grids to the software will be but I will ask the question. The answer will be that anything is possible if you have the funds!

@ kivo... there was a practical problem doing it this way on the index, The step each league is at is displayed when you view the league (or it will be soon)

@PaulC... it's tricky because the 'Others' don't have step levels which would be the natural sorting. I will see about adding a sort order function to the next software update so it can be set manually.

@ Fanatic... yes a single page linking to each league, I could probably do that without any change to the software, a 'All Leagues' page. Leave that one with me.

@ grantham... it's still a work in progress, the site has only been online a few hours. I will be adding a main site menu bar to the forum in due course.

Thanks for the feedback so far. Keep it coming, I will try and get as much of it into the next update as I can, funds permitting.

Steve

I do that too on the rare occasions I want a new tab, I appreciate the choice.

Why deny the user the choice?

I would appreciate the advertising space above the forum area being a bit (well ideally quite a lot) smaller. On my laptop it now takes up about 40% of the page and I've been forever scrolling on the forum pages since it was added.

You have to scroll down for posts. ;)

And compared to many sites is not much at all.

Advertising helps towards costs.

If the adverts are not prominent then advertisers will not buy them. Simple as that.

If I use my laptop (as I am now) I find the same thing happens to me but I think it's a case of needs must. The site has to be paid for so in my view scrolling down is a small price to pay.

I didn't argue against adverts - that's up to Steve. I just suggested that the area for adverts at the top was, at 40% of the top of every page, larger than desirable. Some sites have them to the sides, perhaps that would be better?

I agree with Oftenscore in this... there is plenty sidespace for advertisers too place adverts that crutialy do not annoy there viewers in too a negative atitude too wards them. Whitch is what will happen at 40% off the topscreen.

Just saying from the point off view off a consumer who would not use services of the company with the singing tenor (on principal) rather than the one with the meercats, even if they replaced the meercats with slugs!

I could have embedded the forum into the main site with a iframe, kept the main site menu bar and put the text ads down the side. In fact that was how it was originally designed. The problem here was twofold...

1. it squashed the forum up a lot, you would have been scrolling a LOT more than now to get down the page and
2. most people have the forum bookmarked so would go to it directly and bypass the ads altogether.

For this reason the ads HAVE to be added directly onto the forum and there isn't really another practical way to do it. Yes you have to scroll a little more, on my mousewheel its an extra two clicks, but it isn't as if there was no scrolling at all before the ads appeared.

I did give this some thought before I made the change and the way it is now means that the forum itself is completely unchanged from the way it was. You may even find some of the advertising to be interesting or useful, you never know.

Cheers

It seems fixtures aren't saved unless you input a kick-off time - can this be changed so KO can be left blank as in Step 7 etc... it can be tricky to get correct KO times.

Also, the 'V' between teams in fixture lists looks a little 'odd' - a differnet, clearer font perhaps?

I didn't realise the fixtures were not being saved if no kick off time is entered. I will look at this.

I've just christened NLM with the first results from the Highland and South of Scotland League. I notice there is no 'Goal Difference' column in the tables. Can this be added?
