Saturday/Sunday fixtures / doubles Can't Post or Reply Privately

Swindon Town v. Oxford United has been moved from Saturday 20th August to the following day, kick-off 1pm. This is at the request of the local police. The return fixture, on the first Saturday in March 2012, remains on that day but the kick-off will be at noon. This may enable a 'double' if Oxford City, Thame or the Abingdon clubs, etc are at home at 3pm that day.

If anyone knows of any other Sunday fixtures, please post on here.

Oi!

Seriously, the Oxford game does tend to attract the local pond life in a way that the Bristol fixtures don't. Worth avoiding if you're only going in order to tick the County Ground.

Could it be that the pond life don't see anything special in Brizzle but in Oxford the image they have is of "effete academia popularised by the Hooray Henry" types.

True - roundabouts in Northampton don't even have names, we do have some nice architecture though, even if it is mainly churches.

No nothing to do with Students, you don't see many if any students at Oxford United games.

Rivalry between the two towns pre-dates football, Speedway fixtures from 1949 onwards were always keenly contested, contests between the two at anything tends to get the citizens hot under the collar. The two local papers tend to wide things up, strange as both are printed in Oxford and have their offices in Swindon - anything for a few sales. The A420 - known as the Road to Hell seperates the two. The local Co-op for many years was the Oxford and Swindon Co-op. When I used to go to see Oxford United the A420 would be nose to tail all the way to Swindon on derby day. In the 1970's and 1980's the rivalry between the two was very nasty.

Students don't have to attend matches for Pond Life to have an image of Oxford as filled with Hooray Henry and Henriettas, and in fact the type of student attracted to Oxford I'd be very surprised to see them at football anyway.

Oxford I'm surprised consider anyone rivals, because of the universities world wide reputations I'd have thought they'd look down their noses at everyone, except maybe London.

Many thanks Steelback. I presume that this is because of the burning of Guy Fawkes in effigy that takes place in Lewes every year, and as the new stadium falls within the boundary of Lewes council this sort of fixture change could well become a regular occurrence unless the Government acts to outlaw the practice of burning poor old Guy Fawkes to stop upsetting Catholics.

Traditionally the effigy burned in Lewes is not Guy Fawkes but the Pope.
Some years though this changes and an effigy of some other unpopular people may be burned, ie Bin laden.
This years favourite must be Colonel Ghadafi, although I'd go for Wayne Rooney personally!

The Lewes Bonfire also commemorates the memory of Protestants who were burned at the stake for their beliefs.

It is also one of the few longstanding 'celebrations' left in England, unlike many other European countries where such events are commonplace. The last thing we want is the government outlawing the event at the behest of some do-gooders.

And, of course, we now have an ideal opportunity to visit Falmer. Smile

I have to admit I made a mistake there - I wasn't sure that burning Guy Fawkes would be controversial enough, but I didn't think anyone would dare burn the Pope. Even the Rev. Ian Paisley would probably disown that sort of thing were it to happen in Belfast!

The Pope burned in effigy is Paul V who was the Pope at the time the 17 Protestants were burned for real in Lewes.

Google Lewes Bonfire as it is the biggest Bonfire Night celebration in the UK.

Unlikely to be a regular postponement as the Lewes Bonfire stuff always takes place on the 5th, although it may be that it takes place on the 4th if the 5th is a Sunday.

And the last person that referred to it as a fireworks display probably became an effigy themselves - they do take it quite seriously.

You are correct about the date change if the 5th is a Sunday.

In the past, Lewes home fixtures for the 5th have kicked off at Mid day to allow the visiting team to leave the town, which would be almost impossible at around 5pm due to the celebrations having been started and most roads closed off.

You forgot to mention the National Lift-Testing Tower (it's the concrete chimney thing near the rugby ground) which, according to an Oxford United programme last season, is the only structure of its type in the UK.

Back on topic - now that Oxford City's fixtures are known, unfortunately they are away on the day that Oxford Utd take on Swindon at noon, which reduces the opportunities available for a 'double'.
