Just to keep you up to date on where we are..... currently testing the database software. I'm good at breaking things so I managed to break it in several places Shocked

Currently awaiting a few fixes then I will try and break it again.

Site design in general is done, may need a few tweaks to the front page.

We'll get it online in July as planned I'm sure and then look at how we can improve it.

Cheers.... Steve

Re: [steve walker] Next Seasons Site [In reply to] Quote | Reply or Reply Privately

The new main site is just about ready, it should be online later this week.

The reason for the delay is that I didn't like the editing system, it was too slow and 'clunky' so I have re-specified exactly how it needs to work and am now waiting for the data boffins to do their stuff.

Few things I want to say about the new site before it gets opened up to everyone:

The first thing you need to remember is that this is Version 1. It's reasonably basic. It provides league tables, fixtures, results and attendances. I can also add custom content such as maps, mileage charts. It has global tables for Points per Game and average attendances across all leagues for the top 250 teams.

At this moment in time this is all it does. There are no Cup competitions listed. There is no search facility.

As of todays date the database contains English leagues down to Step 8 plus Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland. England down to Step 6 is complete as are the other UK leagues. Maps have been added down to Step 4. Any other leagues below step 8 can be added on request.

On each league page there will be a big red 'Edit This League' button. This leads to a simple form that asks your name, email address and which league you want to edit. I will then send you the log in details.

Advertising v Donations: I know a few people offered a donation to help with the set up costs and thanks for that. Whilst I wouldn't turn down any donations I've gone down the advertising route so there will be some ads on the new site and on the forum. Don't worry, no pop ups, pop unders or any other form of intrusive advertising. Just a simple banner and a few text ads. Furthermore the ads are hosted on my server so it will not slow down the site loading.
Ad packages will start from as little as a tenner so rather than make a donation you could create a simple text ad (you just type the words, the AdServer software does the rest) and point it at your local club. That helps me and them.

Some things that are already on the list for the next version of the software, which seems odd since Version 1 isn't online yet:

Search facility... by club or by league
Split league tables into Home and Away records
League tables display promotion/play off and relegation places
Change display of fixtures / results to current month only with option to choose other months
'Last Updated - [Date]' on each league

I'm sure there will be a lot more suggestions once the site is live.

Cheers.... Steve

Steve, I've probably missed it somewhere along the line, but is there going to be a "fixtures/results by date" facility across all leagues as there was on TK's site? I always found that very useful.

There is a global fixtures table that lists the next 250 fixtures in the database sorted by date. At the moment there isn't a search facility so you cannot search fixtures by date.
There isn't anything similar for the results in this version.

That will be a great help. I would have thought 250 would be enough.

Keep up the good work!

The delay is due to 'bug squashing' however it's still on target to get the main site online during July. Each time the software is updated I seem to be able to break it so it's better to get these issues out of the way now.

Almost there and then we need to have a big push for Editors so that the leagues get updated.

Cheers

Just looking at the site, which looks good!

Are there plans to include Scottish Juniors in the "Others"? I don't mind entering the team names etc.

Thanks for that. It's version 1 of the site, I already have several improvements in mind but quite frankly I don't want to put my hand in my pocket any longer so I need take a breath and get a little return from advertising / donations first. As a first version I think it's pretty good.

The site can include any league you like. If you undertake to edit it I can add it. Unfortunately you can't add the teams yourself as that is not an Editor function but if you PM me the name of the league and the teams in it I will add it asap
