Re: [jon b] Manager-Go-Round [In reply to] Can't Post or Reply Privately

I seem to recall that Tony Pulis avoided a driving ban a while back on the grounds that it would have caused the him, Stoke City and the people of Stoke-on-Trent exceptional hardship and that he couldn't employ a chauffeur because he needed to keep conversations about potential player signings private. Any chance of an appeal against this ridiculous decision now?

Tony Pulis has left Stoke City

About time too. Over the last two seasons he's proved he hasn't got a clue what to do with talented players, preferring workhorses like Jon Walters and Glen Whelan. As Coates has spent a fortune amassing a decent squad he's made the right decision to get a manager that will actually play them and let the fans see their wares, rather than watching excruciating and ineffective hoofball from what should be squad players.

I hope the pundits do some research before making more stupid comments about Stoke fans being ungrateful and comparing the situation here to that of Charlton and Alan Curbishley. Stoke fans have been remarkably patient with Pulis for two years watching the most dire negative football, despite having spent millions on decent players.

He and his teams definitely do know what to do with talented players....stop them from playing. I assume Stoke fans put up with his style of play because of their being out of the top flight since 1985. Pulis got them back and, against all predictions, kept them there.

In the Premier you have to spend millions just to have a side that might survive in the Division. I don't think the current squad looks to have strength in depth. Coates can either find funds for the new guy or......

It's right though that it doesn't compare with the Charlton/Curbishley situation. Curbishley's teams were good footballing outfits. Charlton's problem was appointing two duff successors.

Will Mark Hughes be an improvement on Pulis?

Blackburn Rovers confirm Gary Bowyer as manager.

Can only hope that brings an end the revolving door there.

Hughes wouldn't be my first choice but yes he'd be an improvement. This is what I mean about pundits and the public not really understanding the situation. Only season ticket holders can tell you just how awful the football under Pulis was. Stoke fans don't want to 'progress' to the top 7 or 8, they want to watch decent football. They'll take 17th next year if it means the possibility of scoring 3 goals in a single match or perhaps trying to score an away goal before the 70th minute. The want for Pulis to go was so overwhelming in the end I reckon a lot would've preferred Championship football under a different manager.

No great suprise but Neal Warnock and Leeds have parted company.

Nigel Pearson is surely on borrowed time at Leicester City?

O'Neill to Leeds?

And a Crystal Palace fan I know, they're becoming increasingly disillusioned with Ian Holloway, said he'd welcome Warnock back with open arms.

The Daily Mail describe Ian Holloway as "the play-off" king":

Quote
Ian Holloway can claim to be the Championship’s play-off king after becoming one of only two managers to earn promotion that way with different clubs.

Holloway, who took Blackpool up in 2010 but lost with them at Wembley last year, now matches Sam Allardyce who beat him with West Ham, and took Bolton up in 2001 a season after losing with them against Ipswich.

While Allardyce achieved his successes with clubs that finished third, Holloway has achieved his with clubs that finished sixth and fifth respectively.

Good luck expecting to see flowing football with Hughes as the manager. You might see some passing, but most of it will be either backwards or sideways. Boring, boring football

I can't see Hughes being any improvement on Pulis - unless you want to return to the genuine excitement of the Championship sharpish like.

That depends to a large extent whether Abramovich keeps his nose out of transfers other than signing the cheques. Sadly I think Mourinho will bring more success to Chelsea. Unsure

Mourinho's appointment is very popular in one sector. The women at work are all very pleased. Although they don't care about football at all, they seem to think he's special Crazy

Re: [jon b] Manager-Go-Round [In reply to] Can't Post or Reply Privately

It really grinds my gears how he refers to himself as 'the Special One' when every club he's managed at has been one of the top teams in the country, with more than ample amounts of money to help him succeed. Porto are arguably the joint biggest club in Portugal, now yes, he did do well to win the European Cup in what was a bizarre year (Monaco beating Real Madrid on away goals, the crazy Milan-Deportivo Quarter-Final and THAT Monaco-Deportivo game) but other than that, has he really achieved that much? Now, if he were to say take Dagenham & Redbridge into the Premier League, and start challenging Spurs and Arsenal for the last Champions League spot, then yes I'd agree, he is one of the best managers of all time. But to succeed at clubs who are among the biggest in their respective countries, and with some of the biggest transfer budgets in Europe, sorry Jose, your not 'special'.

I don't think he'd have returned unless Abramovic agreed to keep his nose out. I think Roman going over Ancelloti's head and sacking Ray Wilkins and signing Torress was the cause of Chelsea's problems.

Which problems are those exactly? Winning the FA Cup and Champions League last year, followed up with a Europa League win this season doesn't sound too shabby to me, loathe that I am to admit it. Most clubs would settle for problems like that!

Well Ancelotti was.subsequently sacked.

I think last season was seen as a failure by many of the clubs fans and the season before would have been had it not been for the slightly fortuitous CL win.

The best managers in the world have been sacked by Chelsea irrespective of what they've won - Leagues, Champions Leagues, FA Cups or World Cups. Seems to work for them though it must be an expensive way of carrying out your business. Their trophy haul over that period stands up to any scrutiny.

And Martinez finally at Everton. These long drawn appointments are becoming the norm.

Pellegrini, finally.

And Owen Coyle in at Wigan. Better than the other candidate I suppose.

And Bernd Schuster takes over from Pellegrini at Malaga. His Wikipedia article makes him sound a bit mad (which we know he is):

Quote
....

According to Schuster himself, his premature retirement from the German National Team was due to a major disagreement with the managements of both Barcelona and the German National Team on either side of a friendly match against Brazil.[3]

....

Although enjoying a successful season with Madrid, Schuster had frequent confrontations with the media. Sometimes refusing to answer questions, making controversial or sarcastic statements and walking out of press conferences.[15][16] On 9 December 2008, Schuster stepped down[17] as manager after a 4–3 defeat to Sevilla FC, and speaking out publicly about his team standing no chance of beating Barcelona in the El Clásico derby match.[18] He was replaced by Juande Ramos.

....

Schuster resigned on 15 March 2011 from Beşiktaş after the bad results, having frequent confrontations with the media, making controversial statements and walking out of press conferences.[20] He was criticized by the Turkish media for trying to implement a reckless attacking style of play.

....
