The Belgian beer, L'Achouffe, or the smoky 'rauchbier' from the Schlenkerla brewery in Bamberg, Germany. The Brewdog brewery from Scotland do some interesting bottled beers too.

I just pick any one of the 50 odd bottles from around the world that I've got patiently awaiting their turn. 99 times out of 100 it will be something I haven't had before.

1. Young's Special London Ale (not a bottled version of draught Young's Special Bitter it's better than that)
2. Brakspear's Triple
3. Oakham Brewery JHB (Jeffrey Hudson Bitter) one of the few draught beers that bottles well

1 and 2 to be poured with care.

McEwans Champion Ale and Batemans Victory Ale, both pretty dark and strong but still decent.

Charles Wells Banana Bread is nice, Jennings Sneck Lifter is an interesting one as well.

You can't beat Titanic Stout for a bottled beer. I'd be interested in knowing where you can obtain the Rauchbier though.

I've had it in a couple of pubs (bottled not draft) and also seen it in a small number of off-licences, typically ones which are listed in the GBG - which isn't many, I know.

For New Year, I stocked up on three different varieties of Schlenkerla and other foreign delights at the Bitter End off licence in Bromley, a splendid little shop which also serves a few cask beers straight from the barrel, as well as doing polypins etc for carry out. Well worth a visit if in the area, and only a few minutes drive from Bromley's excellent Hayes Lane ground....

Alternatively, you could just fly to Bamberg and have rauchbier straight from the tap at the Schlenkerla brew pub! The town of Bamberg is a world heritage site, and not just because it has a staggering 10 breweries - for sheer beauty, it rivals more touristy places such as Bruges. And it's an easy train ride to Nuremburg for the footy too!

ShockedShockedShocked

...though Nuremburg itself is quite a pleasant city and it wouldn't suprise me if you could pick up some Bamberg brews there too. Failing that, head to Bromley!

Mental note made of the offy in Bromley. Another very good German bottled beer is Koestritzer Schwarzbier which used to be available in Aldi but not seen it for a while. Not that I visit Aldi very oftenTongue

I did spot that! Turnover is pretty quick there so I'm sure they'll get more in soon.

I can lose myself for ages on the website and if I'm ever in that part of Norfolk then I'm lost for hours in their warehouse! (And usually much lighter in the pocket!)

For New Year, I stocked up on three different varieties of Schlenkerla

I love Schlenkerla, although it's a bit of a 'marmite' or Laphroaig whisky, love it or hate it. I've described it as like drinking smoked cheese, or smoky bacon crisps. One of the other three was presumably their smoked wheat beer, which I think is the one with the green cap. I wasn't keen on that - I felt it was trying to be a bit of everything, all things to all men.
