Looks like Alfreton Town from the mid-80s to me. And I hope you don't mind, I've moved the post to a more appropriate area.

Try this one... taken in 1984 when the club was playing in a league that currently spans steps 5 and 6. Any guesses?

Is that Hoghton Road? I'm not sure, but I DO recognise it. Obviously a while since I went there, so very cloudy in the memory.

No, not St Helens Town's old ground....but not a million miles away. Good article on St Helens (including Hoghton Rd) in the latest Groundtastic magazine, BTW

Correct - most definitely not Holly Park!

Part of the club's name is written on top of the covered accom, but it probably impossible to distinguish in this photo.....

Is that a cemetery in the background Paul? I was going to say Alt Park, but from my recollection that had houses on the side I'm thinking of, along with a row of conifers. The other touchline had the dugouts too... Unsure

Just done a bit of research and I'm pretty sure it is a cemetery (my memory is cloudy too!). It's not Alt Park though.

EDIT: Given the name of the road on which this ground was located, I'd be astonished if it wasn't a cemetery!

Oh well, I'll feel a fool if I'm wrong but here's two aerial pics of the area taken in 2000 and 2010. The ground's towards the top right.

IIRC, the building at top centre of the 2000 pic would be the changing rooms/social club complex....

....at Vulcan Newton's old ground on Wargrave Road!

Re: [paulh66] Name this ground ? [In reply to] Can't Post or Reply Privately

In 1963-4 Vulcan Institute and Darwen were in the same division of the Lancashire Combination and I followed Darwen home and away but I just can't recall Vulcan's ground - but I suspect I was there.

In the same area were Earlestown who played in the Lancs Combination through the 50s. Their last season in the Combinaton was 1962-3 which was also Vulcan's first. My memory of Earlestown's ground was a bizarre covered enclosure behind one goal in which you could climb up to a second level which was just a wooden floor. I remember going there to support Darwen when an ex-England player was playing for Earlestown (possibly player-manager - can't remember now if it was Stan Mortensen or Wilf Mannion. No doubt Google has the answer somewhere!

Re: [PaulC] Name this ground ? [In reply to] Can't Post or Reply Privately

There was another side from Newton-le-Willows playing in the NWC league in the 1980s, namely Newton FC. They played at Vista Park (or Vista Road?) and I have a vague recollection that I'd heard or read that this ground was previously used by Earlestown.
