Most Teams Can't Post or Reply Privately

Hi, this is my first teaser, so don't know how easy you guys will find it.

The nearest a previous top flight league line up has come to the current is with 17 of the current teams in.

But how many times did that happen and which teams were missing from them?

Surely the answer is 19 teams when there were 22 teams in the first division.

no because there has never been a top flight season that has involved 19 of the current 20 teams.

Re: [MCMXC] Most Teams [In reply to] Can't Post or Reply Privately

There have been 3 past seasons when 17 of the current 20 top flight teams were all together in the top flight. There have been 6 past seasons when 16 of the current 20 were all together in the top flight and 8 seasons with 15.

As mentioned, there was the 2009-10 season, when Blackpool, Newcastle and West Brom were missing. Also:
2008-09 the missing teams were Birmingham, Blackpool and Wolves
2005-06 the missing teams were Blackpool, Stoke and Wolves

In 2007-08 there were 16 of the same teams, the missing teams were Blackpool, Stoke, West Brom and Wolves. Also:
2002-03 the missing teams were Blackpool, Stoke, Wigan and Wolves.
1964-65 the missing teams were Manchester City, Newcastle, Sunderland and Wigan (22 teams, 2-up, 2-down)
1963-64 as above
1960-61 the missing teams were Liverpool, Stoke, Sunderland and Wigan.
1949-50 the missing teams were Blackburn, Tottenham, West Ham and Wigan

There were 8 seasons with 15 of the same teams:
1950-51, 1951-52, 1958-59, 1959-60, 1961-62, 1962-63, 1965-66 and 1966-67.

There has never been fewer than 7 of the current 20 in the top flight, and there were only 3 seasons when it was only 7 (the first 3 seasons of the Football League; 1888-89, 1889-90 and 1890-91).

There were only 15 seasons with fewer than 10 of the current 20 in the top flight. 9 of those were pre-1897-98. The other 6 were:
1987-88: the 8 current teams also present then were Arsenal, Chelsea, Everton, Liverpool, Manchester United, Newcastle, Tottenham and West Ham
1988-89: the 8 current teams also present then were as 1987-88 with Aston Villa instead of Chelsea
1989-90: the 8 current teams also present then were as 1988-89 with Chelsea and Manchester City instead of Newcastle and West Ham
1990-91: the 9 current teams also present then were as 1989-90 plus Sunderland
1991-92: the 9 current teams also present then were as 1990-91 with West Ham instead of Sunderland
1992-93: the 9 current teams also present then were as 1991-92 with Blackburn instead of West Ham

The number of current clubs also in the top flight of each bygone season are:
