I live round the corner and it actually re opened a couple of weeks ago - All a bit strange as the pub menu is Greene King but the beer isn’t - thankfully! And the prices are still very Weatherpoons ish.

Apparently Youngs are looking at the site although they seem to have stripped all the character from there pubs over the past couple of years so I don’t particly want them to take it on!

Got dragged into a Wetherspoons again my wishes - there was a large ad outside stating coffee 95p a cup - great - then at the counter we were charged £1.30 a cup and were told "it's only 95p with a main course meal". The signage did not say that but we eventually found it in the small print of the menu.

So how many establishments are there now? Seems the heady days of going for 1000 are long gone. Whether the amount of closures slows down remains to be seen and the name will never disappear but these seem to be not the best of times for Mr Martin.

Visited the Hippodrome in Market Drayton last night. Certainly not much to look at from the outside and I was fearing the worst, but it's huge inside and very nicely decorated (although they could do with a bit more lighting regardless of the cinema theme!). Quick service at the bar and Steak Club was on top form.

Surprised at a couple of those. Friar Penketh (Warrington) has been there for donkey's years and may well have been the first branch that I visited, while the closure of the Time Piece leaves Dewsbury town centre with literally only a couple of pubs.

None of that...some poor kid was electrocuted in the garden just after
I went away and the governor has been charged with manslaughter Shocked

Boozer now shut until further notice after other 'faults' were found...

Why the delay in reporting this by the press? It was on BBC yesterday and a lot about it in the Mail today along with a lovely photo of The Harold.

Much of the Wetherspoons-related news of late seems to be about pub closures.

However, I've just spotted this...

...with councilors in Portsmouth about to decide on the conversion of empty space above the Lord Palmerston 'Spoons in Southsea into a Spoons hotel.

A statistic I heard tonight from the manager of the Sale Wetherspoons (certainly one of the busier and more successful ones) is that he takes 10% of his sales through the app. The average is apparently 30% and he did sound like he is expected to try to achieve that figure as we head towards an increasingly çashless society.

Great news announced this week to say that The Bourtree in Hawick and THe Cross Keys in Peebles , both of which were put on notice of closure , are now no longer threatened and will remain open.

That's great news as both are popular, well used 'Spoons and there are 50 jobs dependant on them.

The news was in the 'Southern Reporter' newspaper.

Just a forewarning on the off chance anyone's planning a Queensgate/'Spoons double, the Prior John in Bridlington will be closing soon for approximately 8 weeks due to expansion and refurbishment. The work is due to start in the next couple of months.

https://www.bridlingtonfreepress.co.uk/...start-soon-1-9624010

I think I posted this last year, but the work was delayed due to objections.

Was due to open this week but work has been delayed for another 4 weeks due to "unforeseen structural issues". Word has it that someone knocked down a wrong wall. Now due to reopen on 22nd August.

Been into the newish Captain Alexander in Liverpool a couple of times this week. It has to be one of the few wheelchair friendly accessible spoons with a lift from street level into pub and then a lift up to the excellent roof terrace. Toilets are on the ground floor too. Easily an 8/10 spoons.

Last Plantagenet in Leicester closes on September 8th. Building has been purchased by a company called 'Friends Tavern Leicester Ltd' based in London by some Asian guy who apparently owns no public houses so has set up a company to purchase this alone. Very sad news indeed. This drinker will be missed by many. Frown

And a fortnight later The Baron in Hinckley ceases to be JDW. Keeping the same name under new ownership (Elmesthorpe Brewing Company) with a promise of beer a decent prices.
