15 Teams Can't Post or Reply Privately

Ripping off Kernovian's question format here:

In Levels 1 through 5 inclusive (Conference (National/Premier), Football League and Premier League) only 15 teams (which may include 'continuation clubs') started the 2009-10 season who have not tasted promotion or relegation since the start of the 2000-01 season, i.e. have completed 10 or more continuous seasons at their current level.

Three of the 15 currently sit in automatic promotion or relegations places.

How many of the 15 teams can you name?

Which team at each level has been there the longest?

Re: [Grecian] 15 Teams [In reply to] Can't Post or Reply Privately

Let's start with the easy bit - Arsenal, Aston Villa, Chelsea, Everton, Liverpool, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur have been in the Premier League throughout the period, with Arsenal having been there since 1919. Forest Green Rovers and Stevenage Borough have been in Conference National throughout the period, with Stevenage having been there since 1994.

That leaves six more answers. One of them is Rochdale (in the Level 4 league, howsoever named, since 1974), but I don't know the others.

I do know that Hendon have been in the same division (the top level of the Isthmian League, with various nomenclatures) since 1963.

Ah, now then. The Level 2 club has to be Preston North End. I don't know who the others are though - to be honest, I'm quite surprised that there is a club which has been at Level 3 for so long.

Re: [AndyE] 15 Teams [In reply to] Can't Post or Reply Privately

A question similar to this was asked in The Guardian's 'Knowledge' column a couple of weeks ago. That particular question asked who would take over from Rochdale as the longest contionously serving member of a Football League division, assuming Rochdale get promotion this season. As far as I can remember the answer stated that Darlington have the second longest current spell in the same division - I presume that they are the level 4 team since 1992-93. The answer went on to say that as Darlington are also likely to be changing division next season, then the record would pass to Oldham, who I presume are the level 3 side since 1997-98.

You beat me to Darlington and Oldham! However Bury have only been playing at Level 4 since 2002-03.

To steal an American phrase, "my bad". They were both relegated from level 3 to level 2 at the end of the 1999-2000 season:

Macclesfield! Totally forgot about them, didn't do too bad though with only a copy of the Football Paper for a reference.

To follow on from Grecian's question, (and without checking), which 5 teams may make it to 10 straight seasons at the same level next season?

I can think of 4; 3 in the PL and 1 in League One... currently - can't think of a 5th.

So I think that makes it that they must have been promoted or relegated in May 2001

Fulham, Blackburn & Bolton up to level 1

Coventry down to level 2

Tranmere down to level 3

That decade has gone quickly!!!

Wish I saw this before as I could have answered it, as one of my databases I keep has this information regarding to how long a team has been at the currrent level, how long since level 1, level 2 and level 3 etc plus a break down of how many seasons in each level (just for top 4 levels though)

Cheers,
