A few weeks ago I was browsing through CDs at an Oxfam shop in Nottingham, I didn't see anything special but felt I ought to purchase something as the CDs were only a pound and the bloke there had to move several boxes so I could get to the CDs. So I selected one as I liked the picture of the artiste and it had a track on it called 'Birmingham' which intrigued me for some reason. The CD was the self-tilted 'Amanda Marshall' I had never previously heard of her. It wasn't what I expected as I thought she was British, but the Birmingham referred to in the title was in fact the one in Alabama. It is however an absolutely terrific album, Amanda has a superb voice and the songs all have great lyrics. Oddly the songs are mostly about the deep south of the USA, despite this Amanda is Canadian and has only had hits in Canada apart from a no.43 in the USA. She is not a singer-songwriter apart from being credited with co-writing two of the songs. Two of the best tracks 'Dark Horse' and 'Beautiful Goodbye' have videos on Youtube, but I don't know how to post the links on here. The album was made in 1995 so sadly little chance that she will ever be a huge star, and she is not even allowed to release any new material due to a legal dispute with her record label. Still probably the best £1 I have ever spent.
