Colindale Newspaper Library to Close Can't Post or

*****See my note at the end of this thread.*****

Just read that the British Newspaper Library at Colindale is to close in 2012:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/...ks-colindale-closure

Only been there a few times but always found it addictive.

And dug up a few nuggets to boot!

Just because you're paranoid, it doesn't mean they're not out to get you.

I didn't know this -

There are comics including the Beano and Dandy as well as football programmes, which all come under legal deposit – the legal requirement that a copy of every published item has to be sent to the British Library free of charge.

Is this why clubs have to send a copy of every programme to the League or is it the club's responsibility to send one off?

Too bad.

I spent a large portion of 2005/06 at the Colindale newspaper researching my masters dissertation. Good times... Wink

It's the publisher's responsibility (i.e. the club), but I thought it only applied to publications with an ISSN registration. Then I had a quick look at the Legal Deposit Libraries Act 2003 and now I'm not so sure.

I had no idea football programmes were stored there - does this apply just to the FL or lower levels as well?
Now you know where to go if you're looking for that elusive programme for your collection - and don't forget to wear a coat big enough to hide it in...

Don't get to excited, a number of libraries in this country do have the right to have a copy of most printed material if they so wish, anything with a ISBN numbers and any regular publication ie Arsenal programmes through the Beano and Dandy to Big and Bouncy. The Bodleian Library in Oxford being one, but they don't have to take everything, and if they do much is put straight onto microfiche or the modern day version and the original is "stored" in vast wherehouses no where near the library, the Bodleian now store many items in Swindon. This has been going on for many years, my two grandfathers, mother and father and many friends of the family have worked their over a 70 year period and no one has yet managed to sneak out a 1938 Beano Annual or a couple of Woolwich Arsenal programmes.

"The collection of British football programmes and club magazines in British Library Newspapers is amongst the finest of its kind anywhere in the world. The holdings include both historic and contemporary items, with some titles currently still being received. The holdings listed date from the 1890s onwards and they include substantial runs of titles, notably those for Charlton Athletic (1934 onwards), Clapton Orient (1907-1939), Everton (1904-1939), Kilmarnock (1929-1940), Manchester City (1924-1969), Manchester United (1910-1934), and various Lanarkshire (1929-1940) football clubs.

In addition to these, the Newspaper Library also maintains major historic and contemporary runs of periodicals relating to football. The earliest holdings date from the 1870s; again, some titles are currently being received."

See this link for more details.

No wonder the researchers are going to miss having access!

All,

I went into the British Library today after a meeting in London.

I have spoken to the information desk and they have told me they WILL have copies of the Microfilm and digitised items at the British Library next door to St. Pancras Station.

You WILL need to register there to be able do any research.
This is limited to certain times only.
They can take your photo on site.

They may well have longer hours as on some days the BL is open to 8pm.

All is not lost for us remote researchers.

Reader Passes are issued at the Reader Registration Office
Mon 09:30 - 17:45
Tue 09:30 - 19:45
Wed & Thur 09:30 - 17:45
Fri & Sat 09:30 - 16:15

More info on the opening times of the Newpaper Room will be added in due course.

Hope this helps all :)

The unfortunate thing is that anyone wishing to review programmes when Colindale closes may have to travel to Boston Spa - its new repository - as they won't be microfilmed in time. There is no guarantee we will be able to have access to look at them either.

The cost of digitising the entire BL collection is estimated at £750 million, which in these days of public spending squeezes, is highly unlikely and will leave several million pages inaccessible to the public at St. Pancras.

At a price!

At the BL at St. Pancras a few weeks back I asked if the newspapers would be on the internet. "Oh yes, pay per view"

Just a little query as to why an article about a London library has to be a "sticky" ?

It's a national library, not a London library. Hence it's of national importance. Get that chip off your shoulder.

But potentially useful to anyone using this board as a starting point for a research project, as it would indicate that anyone wanting to go to Colindale needs to do so sooner, rather than later.

Personally, I will be very sad when it closes - it is a wonderful facility and the staff are very helpful. I have spent many happy hours researching at desk 20 (and still have ten seasons to do...)

The last time I was at Colindale, the staff told me closure had been delayed until 2013.

However, items are being transferred to Boston Spa, so I would recommend requesting items a couple of days ahead of a visit.

Went there on Wednesday and asked. Staff didn't know a definitive date except mid-late 2013.

Also recommend you do reserve in advance - people were coming in on spec and getting quite angry in having to wait 45 minutes or more.

Anyone with any queries or need any help planning a trip to Fareham Town FC - give me a bell.

Any pre 1979-80 Fareham Town programmes wanted plus any further memorabilia/press etc.

Check out the clubs twitter page at www.twitter.com/farehamtownfc
