A musical interlude........ Can't Post or Reply Privately

As Hoddy, who is too grumpy even for the grumpy thread, has berated me for posting an upcoming gig in the "wrong" section, perhaps we could reserve this thread for musical banter, advance notice of who to watch, who we've seen and what to avoid like the plague. Speaking of which, I'm willing to pay good money to anyone who will relieve me of having to escort my twelve year-old daughter and her mates to forthcoming gigs at the NEC by Miley Cyrus and the Jonas Brothers.

And as a by the by, were any posters in Teignmouth over the weekend for the Muse homecoming ?

Not for all the tea in China would I go anywhere near that "gig." Buncranaboy you have my sympathies. Don't you have a nearest and dearest to play as chaperone for those "events"? At least my 13 year old daughter and 14 year old son have some semblance of taste regards their music, eg Green Day, Pendulum, Prodigy, Kaiser Chiefs. Sadly I cannot get them to enjoy the aural delights that are The Fall though!

A 'gig' with them almost seems as bad as trying to get through a whole live showing/performance of High School Musical...blehhh!

I'm not realy a gig man myself, the last time I went was to watch Snow Patrol a few years ago. I did have the fortune to hear the Pigeon Detectives before they became big however Cool

Yes, but apparently it's "my turn" as I appear to have overstepped the football mark !

It's actually 2 gigs, but hopefully she's "on the turn" as Paramore seem to be mentioned on a daily basis now and that's approaching acceptable. My fifteen year-old made her concert debut at Nightwish in Brixton recently where I was more than happy to escort her and she now has her eyes on tickets I've got for Muse and Green Day.

Neil Young @ Notts Arena
Great Lake Swimmers @ Dulcimers, Chorlton
Aliens @ The Deaf Institite, Manchester
Sleepy Sun @ The same venue

and booked in for the remainder of the year thus far are
Spiritualzed @ Royal Festival hall, London

I am Kloot @ The Deaf Institite
Puressence @ somewhere in the uk on their tour aint decided where yet

The only confirmed gig I've got coming up is The Fall at Windsor on October 1st.
I've seen them a few times before. I'm hoping this is one of their good gigs cos when they're off form they can be awful. I'm a massive fan of theirs but even I've had to turn my back on them and walk away on one occasion in Reading about 20 years ago.
I'm desperate to see Bat For Lashes. I'm loving Natasha Khan's music very much at the moment but have yet had the pleasure of her live. Trouble is the gigs clash with my work so I'm still waiting for one I can attend.
Everyone always says she looks like Lily Allen. the difference is Natasha Khan has got talent.

Feel sorry for him in a way - loads of money with a big hit like that, but a hit with a 'throwaway' kind of song led to a rushed-out album of 2nd rate stuff. Much preferred Deja Blue and the more hard-hitting Storm in the Heartland from him - but little airtime for those in this country.

Planning to see Noah & the Whale at Club Academy in Manchester later this month. It'll take a lot to match the brilliance of seeing Kraftwerk at Manchester Velodrome in July though.

Ah, yes. But don't you all remember the joys of Perry Como, Michael Holliday, Matt Monro, Lonnie Donegan, Billy Fury, Adam Faith and then the really progressive groups such as The Ronettes, The Crystals, The Shirelles, Bobby Sox & the Blue Jeans.

At least my 13 year old daughter and 14 year old son have some semblance of taste regards their music, eg Green Day, Pendulum, Prodigy, Kaiser Chiefs. Sadly I cannot get them to enjoy the aural delights that are The Fall though!

My 19 year old has recently been to see Metallica at Download, 20ish years after I saw them at Donnington.

At my evening job they occasionally play 'music' - now I'm from a broad church on this - pretty much everything - but it did my head in When they put on 'some old music' for me and told me it was NOW SIXTYSOMETHING! - my mood did nt improve. I was however impressed with a lass of about 18 who likes Ska and knows a bit if not much (like me) about its W Indies roots I guess the final straw was the cover of 'just can't enough' being a cr*p new song

Thursday Sept 10th. The Editors at Birmingham Academy. Tickets 22.50 plus sodding 3.18 fees etc

This was opening night at the newly-located Academy, now at the venue previously known as the Night Out and then The Dome on Horsefair and TV crews and press, not to mention dozens of touts, were out to mark the occasion. The opening weekend has been handed over to "local" bands with the Editors getting the showpiece opening night; The Twang play tonight; The Streets are on Saturday and Ocean Colour Scene have Sunday night at the 3,000 capacity venue. There are also smaller 600 and 250 capacity venues on the site.
The old Academy in Dale End which knew life as the Top Rank and The Hummingbird is to be demolished which is a real shame for afficionados of sticky carpets.
Anyway - due to being detained at the Craven, we missed the first act but did see most of the support which was Bombay Bicycle Club - interesting and inoffensive. A lengthy delay while the crew set up and time to check that the bar was extremely well staffed, well expensive at 3.70 a pint and that it was VIP upstairs in the balcony for tonight only. Editors have a new album out soon and have taken a different direction toward electronica. The first number hinted at Depeche Mode but some of the other new tracks leaned toward OMD and bad New Order (sorry Mancs, but they did do a lot of crap as well) while the familiar spiky guitar tracks from the first 2 albums went down a storm. A 4 track encore included Smokers and Munich but ended with new song Bricks and Mortar which saw many streaming for the exits well before they'd finished which was a shame, but also a bit of an own goal.
Overall..........not as good as last year at the NIA but still worth persevering with. Done and dusted by 10.50.
