Another 'it-could-be-a-derby' (but ain't) ...

Stirling Albion v East Stirlingshire

Like many soft southerners, I'd always presumed that the usually-referred-to-as 'East Stirling FC' must be from the historic city of Stirling. They're not - they've always been from Falkirk, 12 miles away (though there was a nasty forerunner to 'Franchise FC' when they merged with and played at Clydebank for a couple of seasons in the mid.1960s). Their fans never refer to them as 'Stirling', but call them 'The Shire'. At the moment they're groundsharing with their proper derby rivals Stenhousemuir, at Ochilview.

I've only just learnt all this - next week I'm up in Scotland for a few days and hope to get to East Stirlingshire v Buckie Thistle in the Scottish FA Cup 2nd round.

Shire's fans would also claim that Falkirk are their bitter derby rivals. However, they've not been in the same division very often in recent times.

In 1974/5 when Falkirk were on a one-year sabbatical in the Second Division Shire famously defeated them at Firs Park. Shire's manager was a novice by the name of Alex Ferguson, in his first season as a Manager.

Shire repeated the result on Ne'er Day 1980 - a season when the two Falkirk sides filled the promotion spots from the Second Division.

At one time the Shire had quite a strong support from the area around their ground - known as 'The Chinatoon'.

There are Sutton Uniteds in the Football Conference, Cambridgeshire League and the Birmingham AFA. I have a feeling there used to be a Sutton United in Herefordshire as well. Sutton United Juniors and Sutton United girls are attached both to the Conference team, and run independently in Sutton Coldfield.

There indeed was a Sutton United in the top division of the Herefordshire League. The ground is still there (opposite the Amberley Arms) but totally derelict and the grass uncut.

Sunderland RCA v Sunderland AFC anyone?

Last time i checked this IS a local derby! Whats the reason for mentioning it?

Neither of them are in Sunderland, theyre in the suburbs, Monkwearmouth and Ryhope, but not Sunderland proper

I thought Monkwearmouth was an integral part of Sunderland? Admittedly Ryhope is a village on the outskirks. Its still a derby though surely. They're less than 3 miles apart!

How about in European Games

Arsenal play either:-

FC Arsenal Kyiv, from Kiev, Ukraine
FC Arsenal Kharkiv, from Kharkiv, Ukraine
FC Arsenal Bila Tserkva, from Bila Tserkva, Ukraine
FC Arsenal-Tula, from Tula, Russia
FK Arsenal, from Montenegro
FK Arsenal Kragujevac, from Serbia

How about, if Gibraltar got UEFA recognition,

Manchester United v Manchester United

It's even more confusing than that - Wellington (of Somerset) - the first team in the Western League is called Wellington, while the reserve team (in the Devon & Exeter League) is named Wellington Town.

And wasn`t Wellington Town the previous name of Telford United?

It certainly was and could have been again before the AFC option was decided upon.

My derby choice for this thread would be Wick v Wick Academy Cool

They shouldn't get straight to this game without first facing Wick from the Bristol Combination (who did a bostin programme when I went)

Teams have a lot in common as both have used a number of ex Oxford United players in recent years and the Eastleigh owners and ex manager come from the Witney area. Think they meet in a friendly this season or last season..
