Favourite club names Can't Post or Reply Privately

Of those playing Saturday football, Donkey Dodgers of the Rochdale Alliance do it for me. I remember as a small child making the mistake of walking behind one of these beasts of the devil. The bruise as it kicked out lasted the best part of a month. To add insult to injury, the hedge in which I found myself was full of nettles. Definitely need dodging. Runners up: Jesmond Mysterons (I'm old enough to remember Captain Scarlet). Second runners up: Brentford, obviously, since that's the team I've had the misfortune to support for the past forty years or more. Least favourite club names? a tie between all those AFC teams...

... outside of the UK, well "the Strongest" from Bolivia stands out, particularly as they have often done what it says on the tin.

Mines got to be Godolphin Atlantic of the SWPL Div 1 West. Sounds a bit more exotic than most British clubs

Stevenage FC - Hertfordshires finest!
The only known Boro exile in Torbay

Last new ground: Upcott Field - Holsworthy AFC 08/05/2010

You won't get better than Peruvian side Deportivo Wanka.. actually saw a bloke on the tube last year wearing a replica shirt.. quality...Sly

Pre-1970 football programmes wanted. Good prices paid for good condition collections. Have thousands for sale, League and Non League. PM with wants lists or for quotes. Especially required pre-1978 Romford home and aways, plus FA Trophy programmes from any rounds from seasons 69-70 and 70-1.

Great summertime thread.

Meppershall Jurassic were until this season amongst my favourites - sadly they now seem to be 'just' plain old FC ~Meppershall.

Another couple of favourites who have changed name or no longer exist were 'Malton Bacon Factory', 'Westerhope Hillheads' & 'Blyth Kitty Brewster'. Sad they're no longer with us.

Extant favourites include 'Battersea Ironsides', Bronte Wanderers, Shipston Excelsior & Lichfield Enots.

Adsmit to a soft spot for Hwange F.C. (Zimbabwe), because the town of Hwange was for many years known as Wankie !

When my Daughter was a Tot we used to get her to pronounce Foreign Football Teams, Mainly Russian and Eastern European but our Favourite was hearing her trying to say Borussia Munchengladbach. It was hilarious, child cruelty or what! Tongue If you have a Young child at home get them to repeat some of these clubs..I would not recommend the Wanka one though...Crazy

I've always liked (hold on I need to check the spelling....) Neuchâtel Xamax.
Closer to home we've got a Crookham Krakatoa. Not unique though as there was a Cove Krakatoa lady's team back in the 1980's.

Mark me down as another prospective buyer of the Wanka shirt.

We were 13 years old and in geography. We were being taught about what was then Rhodesia and on the map of that region one of the lads noticed the town of Wankie. He said to the teacher, "Sir, if people in London are called Londoners, what are people in Wankie called?" Cool as you like Mr. Marchant replied, "Rhodesians, John." Cool

Try getting your kids to say "I'm not a pheasant plucker I'm the pheasant pluckers' son, I'm only plucking pheasants 'til the pheasant plucker comes."

You'll probably find they say, "I'm not a pleasant fuc*er....." before assuming that look of horror when they think they're going to be told off. Cool

African team names really are the best. I remember when I was a student and we used to fill in the dead couple of weeks after the exams but before the summer term finished with 5-a-side tournaments. We thought we were quite witty with names like "Eintracht Mind" and "Tampax Bay Rowdies" but I'd love to wind back the clock and use some of these (genuine) names...

There's also a Sunday League side in Reading called Celtic Rangers. A lovely thought. There is a word for this kind of juxtaposition of two opposites (deafening silence is another example), but I can't for the life of me remember what it is. I'm sure somebody out there can put me out of my misery.

I personally like Scottish Amateur side Newmilns Vesuvius.

And on the risque side as already mentioned on another thread the Great Yarmouth League side Norfolk and Chance.

Internationally how about FC Santa Claus from Finland - they really do exist !
