Although Reg Gutteridge was known mainly as a boxing journalist and commentator, in his early days with the London Evening News he had reported for many years on football within the capital. After war service he became one of the group who would supply football copy for the Saturday evening classified editions of the paper: many times before going off to report on boxing at other venues in London. He has died aged 84.
I happened to be aquainted with him during the 1990s and found him a most amusing man. Although his autobiography was a bit jumbled it still reflected sport in London in eras now long gone.
Obits in The Telegraph (yesterday), Independent, Guardian and Times today.
