03/12/2008 - Obituary Billy Wright – Hillheads Legend
The Whole of Hillheads and indeed North East Non League Football, was rocked by the sudden death of Bay legend Billy Wright on Monday 1 December 2008. To sum up Billy’s career in statistics doesn’t do the great man justice, however it is worth reflecting on his goalscoring deeds, which in all probability will never be surpassed.
Billy made his Bay debut on 13 October 1962 and for the next 11 years he became a goal machine as Bay enjoyed tremendous success throughout the 1960’s. He topped the Bay’s goalscoring charts for 6 consecutive seasons, 1962-63 23 goals, 64-64 40 goals, 64-65 51 goals, 65-66 38 goals, 66-67 33 goals 67-68 34 goals and on leaving Hillheads to join Ashington in 1973 he had amassed 307 goals in just under 450 games for the Bay. Bay collected 2 Northern League titles, 6 Northumberland Senior Cup Winners medals, Northern League Cup Medals and reached the FA Amateur Cup Semi Finals twice during his time at Hillheads. He also represented Northumberland and the North of England X1 and was voted Bay’s Player of the Year for 1967-68.
Billy never missed a Players Reunion night and at the most recent he along with the 5 other players who have reached the 100 goal milestone for the club, was presented with a plaque in honour of his goalscoring feats. Billy gave me a lift home that night and he was ‘chuffed’ to bits with this award.
Since hanging up his boots Billy kept up his involvement with local soccer and became a Councillor with the Northumberland FA. He was also Chairman of the Youth Committee which oversees Junior football in the County. He often attended Bay’s games the most recent being our FA Vase win over Abbey Hey.
It would take a book to write about Billy’s time at Hillheads, but the best way to sum him up appeared recently on the Forum on the clubs website ‘A Great Man, ‘A Great Striker’ with a heart as big as any player I’ve seen.
Now all those former goalkeepers in the grounds in the sky will be looking over their shoulder as the legend comes running towards them.
Billy Wright, Bay all time great, you will always be remembered here at Hillheads and everyone connected with the club sends their sincerest condolences to your family.Lyn Bone
