Commentary on FA Cup tie, Prestwich Heys v Radcliffe on the BBC Red Button.

So far we have had ‘Whitchurch Airport”, “Longbridge Town” and “‘Back-up’ Borough”. He didn’t do too well with “Skelmersdale” either.

probably had a clue 30 years ago when there was a Town!

anyway, I'm about to expand the word 'presenters' to its widest possible meaning - presenting sport in newspapers.

Hullbridge Sports' local press stated that the recent FA Youth Cup 1st round tie with Peterborough United was their first time at that stage of the competition, conveniently forgetting their three previous 1st round ties (and even 3rd round during 1999-2000 - vs. Blackburn).

Double mistake in the commentary on tonight's Haringey Borough game, where the commentator has repeatedly referred to the club getting three promotions in recent seasons (once claiming that a player who had been at the club for six years had been involved in all of them), starting in "step 10".

The club last played in step 6 in 2008. I wonder whether they think that the transfer from the SSML into the Essex Senior League was a promotion.

Listening to Five Live on the way home from Weymouth tonight, the presenter said they were crossing over to Holloways Park for an update in extra time of the Slough Town v Sutton United FA Cup replay, obviously not realising they have moved from Beaconsfield back to their home town and the game was played at Arbor Park.

Whoever was commentating on the Southampton v Derby FA Cup replay on BBC described a Derby substitution in extra time as their "third and final change".

Forgetting of course that a fourth change is permitted in extra time, a fact that wasn't mentioned when Derby made their fourth substitution later.

Just because you're paranoid, it doesn't mean they're not out to get you.

One from the internet. On the BBC Sport website for the Newport County v Middlesbrough FA Cup Replay, it states "Newport County are looking to reach the FA Cup fifth round for only the second time, (also 1948-49)". This reincarnation of Newport County only came into being in 1989, 40 years after the previous Newport County reach the FA Cup 5th Round.

It really doesn't matter about re-incarnations. They do the same with Accrington Stanley.

No one outside of places like this forum, really give a rats arse what happened to Newport County 30 years ago, and that the current club isn't strictly the same enitity and so journalists like those at the BBC are really not going to waste their time.

Even if explained, most people would still see the name Newport County in 1949 and Newport County in 2019 and conclude that it is indeed the same club regardless (and to all intents and purposes, except legal, they are!)

Although, to be fair, during the actual commentary of the Newport County v Manchester City match on 5Live, John Murray (I think) did mention that it was the first time the current Newport club reached the last 16, matching the furthest reached by the old club.

He also mentioned about it being possibly the first "first attempt" FA Cup fifth round tie going to extra time since the previous Newport appearance in the late 1940s, and crediting both facts to the excellent FACupFactfile twitter account.

The BBC website presently (as in just fifteen minutes before kick-off) says:

Sheffield Wednesday v. Sheffield United
Venue: Hillsborough, England

Blades host Owls in Sheffield derby

How can someone working for the BBC, working for their bloody sports department, be this amazingly ignorant of basic football facts? I weep...

And what is the point of a line that says Blades host Owls in Sheffield derby or vice versa when that information is implicit in the information above it. Just shoddy journalism trying to fill space.

Because on the original web page that line was a link to a match preview, hence the underline.

Hats off to Darren Bent, Sky Sports' 'expert' summariser just now on the European draws, who twice waffled on about Arsenal and Chelsea wanting to avoid Sevilla in the Europa QF before eventually being corrected.

Uttered twice on Saturday's EFL review on Quest and repeated by Chris Wilder in his post-match interview - Sheffield United have already guaranteed themselves a play-off berth at worst.
No they haven't.

I didn't believe it at the time and yes, I'm sad enough to have worked it out....

Norwich have though.

Maybe it's a problem with whoever is the navigator/map reader. Not all of us have succumbed to the joys of sat nav. Cool

This can lead to "deep and meaningful" discussions when driver and map reader fall out. As was the case when driving to an evening do and exasperated by the map reader's struggle to find the side road we needed to take, I tetchily demanded "where's the turn off?!!" only to be informed by my other half that he was sat next to her. Frown

Our unfinest hour in terms of doing without a sat nav occurred a couple of years back, coincidentally when attending a family funeral in Newcastle.

Lengthy pre journey preparations included looking up the whole Google view footage of the roads from the motorway to the church and making sure our A-Z for the city was to hand in the car. What could possibly go wrong?

These preparations were wholly undone when it turned out that the road tunnel under the Tyne was closed Frown

Eventually, we found a detour to the church but, unfortunately, had to wait outside as the service was already underway. Unsure

After the service my elder brother volunteered us to take two elderly relatives to firstly the cremation and then the tea/family get together at a cousin's house.

This was when the lack of a sat nav really kicked in as the navigator was unable to translate A-Z routes in Newcastle into "turn left/turn right" etc.

The afternoon rapidly descended into sit-com territory as we proceeded to get lost on the way to both venues, turning up late for each in turn, with the elderly relatives politely not commenting from the back seats on the chaos in the front of the car.

Our getting lost three times and missing/being late for all three events has gone down in family folklore.

And have I now got a sat nav?

No way Cool

Some of us can easily find a 700 mile route from Bournemouth to Newcastle.

.
