Virgin Champions	Can't Post or Reply Privately

Just 6 games left in the Russian Premier League and Rubin Kazan are on for their first ever title, now lying 7 points clear of CSKA and 8 ahead of Dynamo with only 6 games left. They are being fired on by the goals of the evergreen Serb Savo Milosevic !
Meanwhile Kalmar are still holding onto a 3 point lead in Sweden with 5 games left, Elfsborg doing the chasing.

And the odds against Hoffenheim pulling off the most unlikely of virgin championships in Germany ? Diminishing by the week............

No not yet, they have stuttered in their last two games one away draw, one loss at home 4-5 against B36, one of two teams that could overtake them. They need 1 point in their 2 remaining games. Should be easy !!!!
Just noticed also that H B are playing B36 in the penultimate game, these are the chasing pack so a draw in that would also give them the championship.

Norway - Stabaek finished the job with a match to spare after a 6-2 romp against Valerenga.

Finland - Inter Turku won the league by four points from Honka, who would also have won their first title had they come out on top.

Sweden - Kalmar moved three points clear at the weekend with a 1-0 win at Djurgardens while Elfsborg crashed 5-2 at IFK Gothenburg. Three rounds of matches remain, the first of them this midweek.

Whilst no-one expects them to be near the summit for long, Udinese (top Italy), Hull (3rd England), Nacional Funchal (top Portugal) and Leixoes (2nd potugal) are all enjoying their moment too

I see it's not just old Savo who's playing for Rubin Kazan - his strike partner is none other than Sergei Rebrov.

And whilst on unlikely leaders who will probably not hold on.........Hoffenheim now a point clear in Germany after demolishing previous leaders Hamburg 3-0.

That's a pretty unusual bunch of Northern European first-time champions with "virgins" claiming the title in the Faeroes, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia. Oh for a few more further south.

Can't comment on Virgin Cup Winners but some southern european countries have teams in contention for their first ever titles but most challenges will probably fade away as the old guard assert themselves over the course of the season. However, for now, the following have dared to show their heads above the parapet :

FRANCE : Rennes have moved into second place behind the inevitable Lyon and are on a long unbeaten run that includes a 3-0 walloping of the 7-time consecutive champs. You never know........... Also good to see another club challenging for their first title in half-a-century. Which is Nice.

TURKEY : Another title challenge from Sivasspor, just 3 points behind leaders Trabzonspor

GERMANY : Hoffenheim are unbelievably 3 points clear of Bayern .............to whom they travel tomorrow night. Should be worth watching Setanta for. Preferably with the sound off !

PORTUGAL : Just as unlikely as The Hoff, tiny Leixoes from the Porto suburb of Matosinhos keep their noses ahead of Benfica with 23 points garnered from 10 games which have included wins over both Porto and Sporting.

I was at the Bayern v Hoffenheim game last Friday and can report that the visitors looked by far the better side for long periods, despite losing to an injury time Luca Toni goal. In Ibisevic they have a natural goalscorer and with big, powerful forwards such as Demba Ba they look the real deal. Genuine challengers for the title. The Allianz Arena (stop Frottmaning on the S-Bahn) is a splendid venue, especially when approaching on a evening game - it's like something from Close Encounters of the Third Kind. The attendance was given as 69k, the capacity, although there were surprisingly a few empty seats around. Programme for 1.50 euro and admission at 40 euro.

Couldn't make my other games at Red Bull and Unterhaching for various reasons...

Bought mine from Viagogo for 40e three months ago - 10e over face value. Lots of tickets available for trhis game back then but by the time the game came around, newspapers were reporting that Bayern could have sold 150,000 such was the interest in this fixture. Try Bayern direct or if not, Viagogo - you can nearly always get tickets on there for good prices and they are reliable too unlike worldticketshop and the likes...

Into the second halves of their seasons and Hoffenheim remain one point clear of Bayern in Germany though they are having to make do without top scorer Vedad Ibisevic (18 league goals in 17 games) for the rest of the season.

In Turkey, Sivasspor still lead the way followed closely not by one of the Istanbul giants but by Trabzonspor - still the only non-Istanbul side to win the title in Turkey.

Leixoes are just clinging on to a top four slot in Portugal and to sustain even that would be a marvellous achievement.

However another recently promoted club Unirea Urziceni have taken up the mantle of last years debut Romanian champions and are the main challengers to Dinamo Bucharest who lead Dan Petrescu's team by a single point with the rest well back.

In Portugal, Olhanense are top of division 2 and having seen their ground a campaign in the top flight would be interesting to say the least!

I should have added that Hoffenheim are not the only club challenging at the top of the Bundesliga who would become virgin champions.

After beating Bayern Munich tonight, Hertha Berlin sit a point above Hoffenheim while Bayer Leverkusen moved to within 4 points of the summit after demolishing Hoffenheim 4-1 (and it could have been ten) in their own stadium.

Changing of the guard in Germany with Schalke, Bremen and Dortmund fading away ?

True, they've never won the Bundesliga, but they were champions in 1929-30 and 1930-31.

The championships won by Hertha were effectively play-offs between the various regional league champions, so there was no national division as such until the Bundesliga was formed in 1963.

I think they qualify as virgin champions should they pull it off. And I also think Andrei Voronin is required at Liverpool but that's another story..............

Hertha still lead the way in Germany though their shock weekend defeat at Stuttgart leaves them one point ahead of Bayern, Hamburg and fellow-Virgin Champions contenders Wolfsburg who have hit a real run of form and begun to win away as well as at home, fuelled by the goals of Grafite and Dzeko. Hoffenheim are five back but since Ibisevic's injury just can't make their general good play count.

Sivasspor lead Besiktas by one point in Turkey with eleven games left - the rivals drew 1-1 in Sivas last weekend with Trabzonspor now 4 behind after weekend defeat in Gaziantep.

In France it's hard to believe that Olympique Lyon would have been on this thread as Virgin Champions before their run of 7 in a row. Number 8 is proving a tad more tricky with Virgin possibles Toulouse 4 points back after thrashing wannabees PSG 4-1 at the weekend. No other potential newbies......

The challenge of Unirea Urziceni has faltered in Romania as they now lie a point behind Dinamo Bucharest. Timisoara (technically a new club but formed from the ashes of a previous entity) would be top but for points deducted and my Romanian isn't good enough to work out why !

And a very long way to go but Galway United lead the embryonic Eircom league.............

Getting to the business end of the season across Western Europe and in many cases the old guard come on strong and re-assert themselves............but not everywhere.

With 4 games to go in the Bundesliga, Wolfsburg lead Bayern on goal difference despite losing 2 of their last 3, the latest to a 4-goal Mario Gomez blast for Stuttgart whose incredible renaissance sees them only 2 points off the pace themselves. Hertha are only one point adrift but it would take a brave man to bet on Virgin Champions with two such well-practised regulars so close to the summit themselves.

In Romania with 4 to go, Unirea Urziceni remain in touch, just the 2 points behind Dinamo Bucharest so may have to settle for being Champions Leahue virgins instead.

In Turkey, Sivasspor lost at the weekend so with 3 games left they are 2 points behind Besiktas but both sides have tricky games left. It does seem that either Galatasaray or Fenerbahce will miss out on European qualification completely through their league positions..............

Not Virgin Champions but CL Virgins next year from Holland as AZ Alkmaar claimed their second ever title, 28 years after being the last club outside the big 3 to pull it off.

Only the third season of football in the Montenegrin Premier League and we have the third different champions in Mogren of Budva. Beautiful city.........shame about the ground which will have zero chance of staging European Football.
