Mithras Cup Can't Post or Reply Privately

Does anyone have any information on the Mithras Cup which I keep coming across in the 60s and 70s? I assume it was an invitation competition as it seems to have covered various leagues and both amateur and pro clubs. When did it start? When did it finish? I assume it was started in the 60s to give clubs with floodlights extra games and killed off in the 70s by fixture congestion. I would love to see lists of winners and finalists and even results.

Re: [susandy034] Mithras Cup [In reply to] Can't Post or Reply Privately

It started in the 62/3 season. First winners were Finchley who won 3-1 at Oxford City. (Played on May 23rd!)
Not sure what happened to it after that but the Isthmian League stopped its clubs from taking part in that competition, and any other competitions not organised by the FA or the County FAs. This was (apparently) in the light of the huge backlogs of fixtures that some clubs were facing at the end of the season along with the expansion of the IL (Enfield, Hendon, Hitchin and Sutton joined)

Wealdstone won it in 1964. Cheshunt won it in 1970.

Maidenhead United were finalists in 1964, 1967, 1969 and 1979.

Thanks for that info. The other thing I forgot to ask is why Mithras? I believe its from classical mythology but I just wondered why they chose that name? Any ideas?

As far as I am aware, Grays Athletic were the last winners of the Mithras Cup when they beat Tring Town in the final of the 1979-80 competition, having beaten Basildon United and Dorking Town in previous rounds - a huge catchment area for such a minor competition. To add to the travelling, ties were played over two legs. I remember going to the game at Dorking. I think I was the only Grays fan there, and seem to remember getting a lift home in the team mini-bus.

In the 1980-81 competition Grays beat Ford Utd on pens in the first round, but the competition was never completed. I think Grays still have the trophy.

Here is a summary of the information I've managed to piece together on the Mithras Cup (with plenty of input from Roy Stanton). I would like to collect as many round-by-round results as possible, so if anyone has any scores from this competition, please feel free advise them.

The 1962/3 scoreline was taken from this forum, but may represent only one of the legs.
The 1972/3 runners-up were probably Cheshunt.
The 1976/7 winners were possibly Boreham Wood.

Boreham Wood did indeed win the Mithras Cup in 1976/77. I do
have some results in my possession but I'm not sure how valid
my information is, so I'll desist from posting them.................
If I can confirm what I have I will post at a later date.

I have just located this very useful thread while looking to fill a paragraph on the Mithras Cup for my ongoing Braintree Town history book. Not sure how much use it'd be after all this time but if its of use to anyone I can supply all the Crittall Athletic/Braintree & Crittall Athletic results and I also have the 1967-68 cup draw.

Better late than never, hopefully - Hendon's only results in the Mithras Cup were

18/09/62 Hendon 0 Finchley 2
16/10/62 Finchley 2 Hendon 1

As Hendon joined the Isthmian League in summer 1963, we never took part again i the competition.

3/11/70 Ruislip Manor 0-7 St Albans City - 2nd round 1st leg
24/11/70 St Albans City 10-0 Ruislip Manor - 2nd round 2nd leg
Both ties played at Clarence Park, St Albans as Ruislip Manor did not have floodlights! Our biggest ever aggregate win.
