South of Scotland FA Challenge Cup Draw 2008/9 Can't Post or Reply Privately

Not to be confused with the SFA South Challenge Cup, which has yet to be drawn.

Rd 1
Abbey Vale v Queen of the South
Creetown v Newton Stewart
Crichton v Dalbeattie Star
Gretna v Stranraer FC
Heston Rovers v St Cuthbert Wanderers
Mid Annandale v Threave Rovers
Nithsdale Wanderers v Fleet Star
Wigtown & Bladnoch v Annan Athletic

The draw for this was made a couple of weeks ago, prior to Gretna's formal winding-up.

However, plans are afoot for an 'AFC Gretna' type club to play in the South of Scotland FA next year, possibly based at the Gretna Greyhound Stadium.

When are these fixtures likely to be played? What sort of team will QoS field?

Probably September / October sometime.

Queens team will be a youth side if the game is played on a Saturday. Queens have been known to play games in this Cup midweek in which case some fringe first team players could be involved.

If its a mid week game then some of the fringe players will feature, if its a Saturday then its going to be the U17's.

Last Season Fleet Star played at Palmerston mid week during a spell when the first team had missed a game due to postponement so the first team where dispatched, game finished 10-0. A mismatch of collosus proportions although Fleet deserved a shed load of praise for never giving up. The next round saw a mid week game just before the Scottish SF so the U16's played at Lockerbie v Mid Annandale and lost 3-2.

QoS tend to treat the competition with a bit less respect then they should (imo) but given the relatively small squad we run with the management tend not to ''risk'' the first team unless it really suits. The lack of a youth team other than 16's last year meant they played, at least this year they will be 17!

Have I missed something? Who are Heston Rovers?

Are they still playing at same ground, Norfolk Park? Isn't Heston nearer to Dalbeattie?

Heston Rovers are a boys club in Dumfries who operate up to U17 level they have 'taken over' Dumfries FC and will run under the new name next season. They will continue to play at Norfolk Park, Gelncaple - although i seem to recall one press report hinting at it being for next season only. Heston are based at St Josephs College playing fields and ave just opened a new clubhouse so wether they plan to relocate in time i dont know.

Funny move really i wonder if they are looking at the move as a place for the U17s to move onto and hoping to supplement the team with old boys who have an affection for the club that they played for as kids? Others may just see it as ''i'm not playing for a kids team'' though. could be a difficult time ahead but i hope it goes well in the long run. Dumfries as a town could certainly sustain more than one SoS side but it does seem many locals are happier playing local amateurs rather than trekking to Stranraer, Wigtown and Newton Stewart every other week.

If the new gretna ever appear then an opening day fixture of Heston Rovers v AFC gretna would have been hard to believe a few months ago!
