It saves their opponents from travelling to a game which will then get expunged from the results

And, for this season at least, Bury are still in the League

So, because they owe money, the EFL will deprive them of revenue and possibly cause MKD and its supporters travelling expenses from bookings which they cannot recover. Brilliant.

My rather superficial understanding is that the principles involved are similar to those of trading while insolvent, for example it can give rise to various liability issues and is potentially unlawful. The EFL's action may have deprived the club of some gate income but it's also prevented the club incurring further liabilities in respect of the costs of playing the match.

Ah, a club who cheated their way into the league not being able to play against a club who cheated their way to promotion. Tragic.

But personal thoughts aside, Bury have had months to sort this out, and they haven't. Do they have insurance for the players and current public liability insurance? Should the police risk being left out of pocket in they attend the game and the club subsequently folds. Should Bury be allowed to sign players to replace the ones they haven't paid?

At some pont at line had to be drawn. Arguably it should've earlier. Any MK fan who booked non-refundable travel clearly wasn't paying any attention to the situation.

Much as I would have liked to see Workington stay in the League, I would not say that their replacements cheated their way in.

Surely Bury should have had points deducted last season when they weren’t paying players.

They were promoted with money they didn’t have.

A new rule should be introduced by the EFL where a club is deducted three points each time players are not paid on time.

All clubs should have their finances in place at the League AGM, as that is where the next seasons set-ups are sorted. Bury should not even have been allowed to be considered for this season, and instead of being just suspended, they should have been expelled. Apart from MK Dons fans being inconvenienced for this Saturday, they also face a mid-week trip should the game eventually go ahead.

We have been deducted 12 points for the forthcoming season and I imagine will be deducted more for the postponement of this game.

The EFL is a touchy subject. You say about cheating our way? Us fans didn't cheat. The issue lies initially with the EFL. Our previous Chairman Stewart Day was in tenure for nearly 5 years and the EFL never conducted a fit and proper persons test. The man was a maniac. Our current chairman Steve Dale who took over in December has also not had the fit and proper test. How can the EFL punish the club when they haven't fulfilled their obligation to safeguard the club from these maniacs?

Its not the first club either. Blackpool had it with Oysten, Bolton with Anderson, Notts County, Charlton, Macclesfield, there are plenty more.

I think this is the end for us.
The sad thing is that we found out via Accrington Stanley, not Bury FC or the EFL. The EFL released their statement after Accrington.

Our chairman is a sociopath. When he bought the club he said he was in remission from leukaemia. A month or two later he said he had the all clear. Now the press are all over him, he said on Talksport that he has terminal leukaemia. If this man can lie about a serious illness such as that, what else can he lie about.

There is a protest planned outside his home tomorrow. What is will achieve? Absolutely nothing but the fans have got no other hope.

The worst thing when a club is in such a situation is the silence from the people that you want answers from (been there) and the thoughts of hopelessness multiply as time goes on.

Hope you weren't one of the fans trudging to Gigg Lane the other day to pick up season tickets whilst under the spotlight of the BBC on national news.

This is the first time in 29 years I didn’t buy a season ticket. Something told me not to, I’m glad I didn’t! On the positive side, it’s the reason why I have joined this forum and started to hop around non league clubs!

I called the previous chairman out and was assaulted by other supporters for it. Everyone bought into his bull, look at us now!

I do feel sorry for the fans but I don't feel sorry for the club. The game is littered with clubs who have financially doped (And continue to do so)

Bury paid out more than they could financially sustain last season. It's not as if the club hasn't been in financial trouble before y either.

On two previous occasions there has been a period of financial difficulty. Some fans of other clubs have suggested (Rather cruelly) your nickname should be the Bucket Shakers.

You are in an unenviable position geographically. Several club around you of similar size with a couple of giants who would have attracted the vast bulk of fans. Other clubs make it work. Perhaps the fact that there are too many playing this as a finite game. Perhaps the club needed to take a good long look at long term where they could survive.

Seems to have been going on for ages have these cash problems at Bury, even when they had FCUM in paying rent. Some clubs struggle with such a loss of income but I doubt that plays much part in this one.

After all their father did for Bury FC I wonder how the Neville brothers feel about this while helping bankroll the nouveau riche down the road. They can do what they like with their money, of course, but there must be more than a tinge of melancholy.

Presumably to develop, oversee and enforce the regulatory requirements and processes currently within the remit of the EFL. Problem with self-regulation is the rules are determined by those who are subjected to them - one reason why FFP and the fit and proper test, for example, have such limited effectiveness.

Flip side is who funds an independent regulator (presumably the EFL/clubs via some kind of levy) and to whom it'd ultimately be accountable (presumably government, perhaps in partnership with the FA).

It's clearly asking government for the creation of an independent regulator. The concept of such a body, created by and accountable to government, is well-established (though not entirely without criticism) in other industries. There won't be a petition to float ideas about the fine details of its remit.

Reading social media, almost all Bury fans want owner Steve Dale to sell up & never go anywhere near their club again. I wonder if his ego will end up killing the club?

By now, I think their problems run deeper than Dale's ego. The reported debts are still huge compared to the residual value the club would have if someone paid them off, so they're looking for a benefactor not an investor. If I were a Bury fan, I'd be more worried about keeping Dale away from a phoenix club than about whet he does with what's left of the original.

Dale taking Bury into a CVA allows him to dictate the future(being the largest creditor). So he’s not some innocent bystander in the sorry mess.

How many games are the EFL prepared to suspend? If these games are to be played then they will come a cut off point hen there aren't enough free match days left to fit them in.

The EFL have given the club until Friday the 23rd to come up with the evidence they want or they will be expelled (you should be able to Google what that evidence is).

No problem, the creditors have agreed their payback and he claims the funds are in place to pay them...

Horrible sense of deja vu here, recalling some of the creditors Vaughan claimed Chester City had before they went under.

Bury's whole existence is in doubt at the moment, never mind the Tranmere fixture.

Is it time yet to consider the ramifications of the expulsion. How far down would it filter, where could a Bury Phoenix be fitted back into the pyramid?

Yes we haven't really been expecting it to take place for a few weeks now. We were informed last week that a decision about suspending the fixture will be made either today or tomorrow (I've forgotten which).

Either.

Statement read =
EFL
''Bury are due to play Tranmere Rovers on 24 August 2019 and, because of the close proximity to the notice of withdrawal deadline, a decision on whether to suspend that fixture will take place in the early part of week commencing 19 August 2019.''

It’s an interesting situation because it’s possible the club doesn’t actually go pop, even if it’s expelled (in all likelihood it would), but it’s possible that a Phoenix club wouldn’t actually be needed and if the fans can wrestle the club off of Dale, then the same club could join the pyramid next season (don’t know where).

The FA retains discretion over where a League club would reappear if it goes under and a phoenix club is created, unlike a club at steps 1-3 for which step 5 is now automatically the highest level they can re-start.

If there was a possibility that a phoenix club could re-start at step 3 or 4, it's hard to see why anyone would want to pay several million to clear the CVA liabilities and all remaining football-related debts and probably get told to re-start at step 2 anyway. Why not let the club go pop and buy all or part of the assets from liquidation.

Which is a long winded way of saying I really don't see a way out of this from where they are now. I'd be delighted to be proved wrong, of course.

Tranmere not Rochdale?

I think the "Dale" involved here is the individual/problem.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/49410172

Presumably he thinks by spinning it out to the last possible moment he'll get a better offer.

Perhaps he's imitating Bojo. Trouble is Boris doesn't appear to mind crashing out.

Our game against them was called off the other day, nothing to do with this latest possible extension, which would only be for 24-48 hours and dependent on a credible deal effectively being agreed in principle before expiry of tomorrow's (existing) deadline,

So Dale is now telling everyone he's sold up and the (prospective) buyers, who appear very credible, are saying there are issues still to be resolved. But they're seeking an extension from the EFL in order to "continue to explore the prospects for purchase" and the media are reporting that the EFL is discussing it right now.

Hopefully there'll be an announcement from the league tonight but, if the deal is still contingent on due diligence being completed, then it'll be another very nervous few days.

The local paper is updating the story regularly tonight.

Interesting comment from MP Frith stating he's been working with the prospective buyers since 7th June - which makes me wonder why this has been left so late.

Perhaps this goes some way to explaining why.

Let's hope this story has a happy ending.

Now that Bury have gone there are 2 options left for the club. Either continue looking for a buyer to keep the club alive then find a league play in for 2020/21 or liquidate the club and wait for a phoenix club to be formed. Either way I think NWC looks to be the starting point

Yes the club still exists and, according to their MP, has appealed to the EFL against the expulsion. He says "the EFL have proof of funds from a further credible global organisation with bid agreed with owner Steve Dale."

Not sure they even have a right of appeal though.

But surpassed by Cwm...

A quick search on Google will show Albion, Welfare, etc...but no Cwm FC!

QPR and WBA don't count as these are only abbreviations.

Aquick search on WDYG will show I went there in the Gwent league a couple of seasons ago. No suffix. They may have gone lower since, gcnc will no doubt confirm

Yes the club still exists and, according to their MP, has appealed to the EFL against the expulsion. He says "the EFL have proof of funds from a further credible global organisation with bid agreed with owner Steve Dale."

Not sure they even have a right of appeal though.

The Guardian reports that this 'agreed bid from a credible global organisation', apparently submitted before the 5pm deadline, is with one Gustavo Perreira, a London-based pastor in partnership with WGS Mining, a gold mining company in Brazil: https://amp.theguardian.com/...tter_impression=true

The league has said it'll look at any letter but there is no appeal against the expulsion and the decision is very unlikely to be reversed.

What's interesting, though, is that this bloke appears to be the main man at Eastern Senior League side Fire United judging by his two directorships per Companies House: https://beta.companieshouse.gov.uk/...6N_ghFs/appointments. I see one of them has an overdue filing..

Unfortunately Cwm FC disbanded 3 seasons ago. They were playing in the Gwent County second division at the time but struggled to raise players so had to knock it on the head

At the risk of offending everyone, I found it amusing that Muff was an expert on Cwm, especially after knocking it on the head. Tongue

Frith says that Bury are on the agenda for today's EFL board meeting, though doesn't say in what context.

Strange - football fans and politicians are (rightly) outraged at the football authorities for allowing any old Joe to run and ruin a football club.

But now football fans and politicians are urging the football authorities to allow a last minute £7m offer from a London pastor and a Brazilian gold mine, for whom "due diligence is not an issue" according to the BBC, to preserve a club's status.

Funny old game.

Be interesting to see if Frith raises the Bury scandal in the House of Commons next week. He must be sorely tempted to raise the tangled web of their finances and the agreeing of the CVA.

Of course, the HofC may be pre-occupied with other matters. Frown

This must have occurred very soon after our visit which was on New Years Eve 2016

I believe it was at the end of that season . The pitch has been used for the odd game by RTB Ebbw Vale and Nantyglo since but don’t think it’s is permanently used by anybody now

Now that efforts to rescind the club's expulsion have failed, he's tweeted tonight about 'upping the ante in parliament' being the next step. As you suggest, timing may not be the best!

With Steve Dale blaming everyone but himself for Bury's problems he presumably thinks the proroguing of Parliament is proof of a massive establishment conspiracy to prevent questions being asked about their situation.

The Gwent Premier League have a team they refer to as Oak.
