Sad and shocked at the news.

Always disappointed when he wasn't one of the panelists on "The News Quiz" and had been looking forward to his next appearance. His politics weren't quite mine but that was probably my loss not his.

For once I agree 100% with Jeremy Corbyn who has said that "You made us all smile. You made us all think. Rest in Peace Jeremy"

I was in Cardiff about 20 years ago having breakfast in a hotel when this voice said to me "are these two spaces taken?". I looked up to see a face I couldn't place straight away, but as soon as he sat down I realised that it was Peter Tork. What an intelligent person. I was intoxicated by his conversation. Apparently, the Monkees had played in Cardiff the night beforehand. Meanwhile I enjoyed the Moody Blues the follwing night, combining a day time business meeting with pleasure in the evening.

RIP

Charlie Whiting F1 race director since 1997 has died suddenly aged 66 in Melbourne on the eve of the first race of the season.

As a keen follower of the sport for over 35 years he had done so much for the safety of the sport & several drivers can thank him for being alive today. Not everything he did I agreed with but there's no argument that he had the respect of the teams & his say was final. In my opinion his death is the most significant in the sport since Ayrton Senna. American broadcaster and former BBC Radio Oxford presenter Bill Heine has sadly passed away after a long battle with leukaemia at the age of 74. Used to enjoy listening to him on his drivetime show when passing through the area on my way to a match up north. He is also well known in the city for erecting a fibre glass sculpture of a shark on the roof of his home in Headington in 1986, at the time without planning permission but now it has listed status!

Sad to hear this.

Sandy Radcliff had a long career in television and film stretching all the way back to the early seventies. Before joining the cast of EastEnders, she also starred in the 1975 episode of The Sweeney ‘Stay Lucky Eh?’ alongside other co-stars Peter Vaughan and Alun Armstrong, and in the 1982 of Minder ‘Dreamboat’ alongside Richard Griffiths. In cinema, she also starred in the 1979 football-themed film ‘Yesterday’s Hero’ alongside Ian McShane.

Actor Edward Kelsey has died at the age of 88.

Most famous for playing the character of Joe Grundy in 'The Archers' on Radio 4, he also starred on television with regular roles in 'The Vicar Of Dibley', 'Doctor Who', 'Z-Cars' and 'Juliet Bravo' among others. On hearing of the news of his death, I re-watched the episode of 'Minder' in which he appeared, called 'If' (Series 3, Episode 13) from April 1982, in which Edward Kelsey plays a police foreman who takes charge of the stripping down of a BMW seized from Arthur's car-lot on suspicion of it storing drugs.

Interestingly he only averaged 46 in the Lancashire League.

Actor John Ronane has died at the age of 85.

Probably best known for playing Sergeant David Singer in ITV's Strangers, with Don Henderson and Frances Tomelty, but he had many many bit-parts in series such as Z Cars, Dixon of Dock Green, All Creatures Great and Small, and The Sweeney.

The episode of The Sweeney that he appears in is 'Trust Red' (Series 4, Episode 4), where he plays Red Redgrave, an ageing member of a gang of safe-breakers with the personal skill of climbing, allowing him to climb into targeted premises before letting the rest of the gang in. His feelings towards this occupation begin to change after a fellow gang-member falls to their death from a building roof.

The thing about John Ronane's portrayal of Red Redgrave is that it is one of the very few sympathetic villains seen in The Sweeney, with his feelings towards crime, the police, the women in his life and his own ageing process changing as he acknowledges his growing age and weakening body. In parallel, John Thaw's Regan is going through exactly the same emotions, with a realisation of his physical vulnerability coupled with an irritation towards Dennis Waterman's young and increasingly cocky Carter. The episode was filmed in 1978, and it was from about this point that the world-weary side of Regan's character came more to the fore, with his doubts about the job and his life very much now on the turn.

As an episode, it lacks any of the stereotypical car-chases or excessive violence, and for those reasons is a stand-out and rather poignant episode of The Sweeney, with an excellent performance from John Ronane. Well worth watching.

Met him a couple of times when I worked at Brid's Spa Theatre, a genuinely nice bloke who always had time to talk. Beset by bad health, but still carried on performing and doing his charity work. I was never particularly a fan of his act, but still felt quite said when I read that he'd died.

Spookily enough, I watched the last few minutes of 'Easy Rider' on TV on Friday night just before going to bed (the film ends with the death of his character) and the first thing I saw when I switched the TV on Saturday morning was the news of his death.

Perhaps a celebrity in his day, Michael Edwardes, former chairman of British Leyland has died. I hope his coffin is built better than the cars.
