Billy Wilson, who played for Blackburn Rovers and Portsmouth, has died aged 71.


He signed for Portsmouth for 15,000 from Blackburn in January 1972, and played 216 appearances for Pompey, scoring 6 goals. After retiring from football, he went on to run the Three Tuns pub in Gosport.

born 10th July 1946 Seaton Delaval, Northumberland
died Thursday 22nd February 2018, aged 71

Blackburn Rovers Juniors, full contract Sept 1963, 246+1 league apps, no goals. 15,000 transfer to Portsmouth Jan 1972. 188+6 league apps, 5 goals. 22 other apps, 1 goal.

At Fratton Park, over five and a half seasons, he performed either at left back or in a midfield role. He later combined playing with running the Pompey pub with wife Heather, before leaving football to work in the pub profession until his retirement in 2006.

Gosport based Wilson was recognised for his excellent service to the Blues by being inducted in to the Hall of Fame in 2015.
