Bella Emberg, of 'The Russ Abbott Show' fame has passed away. I was quite surprised with how much prominence her death was reported. Certainly remember her from the Russ Abbott days, but anyone under 35 probably wouldn't remember her. She was 80 years old.

Cyril Regis has died aged 59.

His passing will be no doubt be included in the football obituaries section, but as a major breakthrough player from the eighties, deserves a mention within the celebrity thread.

RIP.

Sad to hear that Dolores O'Riordan, lead singer with The Cranberries, has died at the age of just 46.

I think I'll be listening to "Zombie", "Linger", "Ridiculous Thoughts", "Ode To My Family" etc. a lot tonight.

Thanks Punky - I had forgotten that song.

But I'll raise you another from the music industry who passed away 10 days ago - Ray Thomas of the Moody Blues, who I last saw play with them about 2002, but who I shall never forget at the 1969 Isle of Wight concert in particular. RIP

......Oh shite. Though thought there was a degree of inevitability about the passing of the curmudgeonly ol' bugger, a lifetime of fags and alcohol on an industrial scale is always certain to shorten the lifespan. But then there is the music.

From the first hearings of 'It's the New Thing' in the latter months of 1978 through to the closing chords of 'Nine out of Ten' on the last album (I had a premonition that would be the last music we would ever hear from the gruppe), The Fall (AKA MES) have been a major part of my life as you can probably guess from the Fallism's placed randomly in my inanities. Gloriously brilliant and frustrating in equal measures is the best accolade I can muster at this time.

Je Ne Regrette Rien, but after my own extrication, never again witnessed the shambolic intensity of The Fall live. Belgrave Music Hall Leeds 23rd May 2017, sadly eluded.....

I've been a Fall Fan since I was about 14 (1978) and Mark E Smith has soundtracked and influenced pretty much my entire life. In latter years I have become friends with former Fall members Steve and Paul Hanley, Steve Trafford and Brix Smith-Start (Mark E Smith's ex-wife.) The loss of Mark has hit me hard and I've taken solace in the wonderful output from BBC 6 Music since the news broke last night.

My thoughts are with Mark's family, friends and band mates past and present.

You'd think God would have shown more gratitude to someone who spent his whole life preaching. Instead God gives him cancer, Parkinson's and then robs him of the chance to make it to 100. Why are people so stupid to believe in a deity?

Barbara Alston (1943-2018) was a founder member of US pop group the Crystals who became part of Phil Spector's stable. Although she sang lead on occasion, that was not Barbara's preference and she was quite happy when LaLa Brooks took over that role. Big hits came in 1963 with "Da Doo Ron Ron" & "Then He Kissed Me".

Barbara was with the group when they came to the UK in early 1964. I saw them performing in one of those 1960's package tours which were promoted by entrepreneurs such as Larry Parnes. The show was at the Odeon, Cheltenham and the bill was topped by Joe Brown. Other acts included Manfred Mann, Johnny Kidd & the Pirates, Mike Preston & Canadian singer Daryl Quist. I knew somebody at the hotel where there was a post-gig party and managed to blag a pass. Manfred Mann had had a few drinks by the time I arrived and actually introduced me to the girls : "These are the CRYSTALS!" he roared. They were bubbly and having a lot of fun at the time. Probably took their minds off how Spector was mismanaging their careers as he concentrated on pushing the Ronettes to global fame ...

I had the pleasure of seeing Ken Dodd live twice, in 1981 and 1994. He was superb both times and my biggest regret is not seeing him subsequently.
His shows went on for hours, suffice to say I left the second show at half midnight as (It was in full swing) as I had to be at work for 6am.
No smut or nasty ness in his act, just a man who set out to make folk laugh.

I asked Ken Dodd for an autograph many years ago. He was happy to oblige, but his expression changed slightly when he saw that the signature on the opposite page was Jimmy Tarbuck's. He quickly found an alternative place and signed with a flourish. "Comparisons are odious," he explained with a wink!

Imprisoned, kept in solitary confinement, kept under house arrest, exiled and tortured. A leading light in the anti-apartheid movement whilst her husband was on Robben Island.

Winner of the 1986 Robert Kennedy Human Rights Award.

Especially in NYC in those days.

'Do it to them before they do it to you' was another classic saying from the watch commander from that show before sending the troops out onto the streets.

Yes. my quote was the phrase used by Sgt. Phil Esterhaus (played by Michael Conrad) at the end of roll call. Sadly, he died whilst 'on the job' with his lover Grace Gardener (played by Barbara Babcock).

Lucy Bates (Betty Thomas) took over the sergeant's roll for a while but missed being on the street (stop sniggering at the back!), so Sgt. Stan Jablownski (Robert Proski) took over the running of the squadroom having transferred from the South Ferry precinct (if memory serves). Your quote was what he said at the end of roll call.

My favourite character was Detective Mick Belker (Bruce Weitz).

Oldsters like me may recall Ronald Chesney from his days as a gifted harmonica player who toured the variety circuit in the late 1940's/early 1950's and became a musical mainstay of the "Educating Archie" BBC radio show. I was taken to see the summer season production of this show in Bournemouth during August 1952.

The American novelist Philip Roth has died at the age of 85. His most famous work was probably "Portnoy's Complaint", but he also made a telling quote about a young Donald Trump in 1977:
"Ignorant of government, of history, of science, of philosophy, of art, incapable of expressing or recognising subtlety or nuance, destitute of all decency, and wielding a vocabulary of seventy-seven words that is better called Jerkish than English."

American "tough guy" actor Clint Walker has died at the age of 90. He will be best remembered for his portrayal of Cheyenne Bodie in the 1950's TV Western series "Cheyenne". Big, mean and moody and always a winner when it came to a fight against the baddies he came across wherever he found himself. Maybe the better known Clint picked up on some of his storylines!

Wasn't he the bloke who was stabbed to death by Carter behind a bookmaker's shop? Rather an unconvincing death as the wound was a small one in the stomach. Even so, I believe the BBFC ordered minor edits to this scene at the time of the film's initial release in 1971, although these were later rescinded.

Denman, the horse which won the Cheltenham Gold Cup in 2008 and had a great rivalry with Kauto Star, has died at the age of 18.

Some people might consider horses to be celebrities (Caligula made his horse a senator, or something like that anyway) but I think this particular item should be in the 'Other Sports' section of this forum.

Could Denman and Peter Stringfellow have been the same person? Did anyone ever see them together? With his magnificent mane Denman would have been an ideal nightclub owner. Smile

I thought he made his horse a consul. Happy to stand corrected though.

Denman was a gelding, whereas Stringfellow, I understand, was put out to stud.

Reminds me of a couple of good gigs seen during the summer of 1968 at Torquay Town Hall. Fleetwood Mac in July (a month before Danny Kirwan signed up) featuring Peter Green, Jeremy Spencer, John McVie & Mick Fleetwood. Hands up those of you who remember what a great track "I Need Your Love So Bad" was! Then in August it was John Mayall's Bluesbreakers with JM leading Mick Taylor, Stephen Thompson & Jon Hiseman. Whoever was in charge of bookings back then must surely have loved the blues!

There's still plenty of good music out there, as there always was; you just need to look harder perhaps.
The Good Old Days you refer to still saw "artists" like Jonathan King, Val Doonican and Tiny Tim top the charts - in fact any old TOTP from the Golden Age still features more shite than decent stuff....

Bill Speakman has died at the age of 90. He won the Victoria Cross for exceptional bravery in the Korean War in 1951, being the first person to be presented with this award by Elizabeth II.

To give a non-League link, he was brought up in Altrincham, on Moss Lane no less. Later he emigrated to South Africa (although it appears he returned to be a Chelsea Pensioner), but did attend an away game at Torquay United as a guest of the club in 2008, while visiting relatives in Devon.

From 2017, but I still wanted to mention the passing of this star from the end of last year...

Actor, playwright and screenwriter Meic Povey died on 5th December 2017, aged 67.

Meic was one of Wales's leading playwrights of modern times, in both the English and Welsh languages, and was also one of the co-creators of the long-running soap opera 'Pobol y Cwm' in 1974. It is still running today after forty-four years, and still usually the most-watched programme on the S4C channel.

However, probably Meic's most famous acting role on television was that of Detective Constable 'Taff' Jones in 'Minder', the sidekick to Patrick Malahide's Sergeant Chisholm, who together had some of the funniest lines and most memorable scenes in the whole series...

Lord Carrington, who has died aged 99, was Foreign Secretary at the time of the Falklands crisis but had to resign because of it. Oddly enough, I didn't remember that at all, only John Nott's resignation as Defence Secretary at the same time, which I think got far more publicity.

Even when his death was announced the other day I did not know about it until I read today's Metro newspaper, which just goes to show how much the BBC thinks showing drunken English fans is far more important than the death of someone who was in Churchill's government and was often mentioned as a possible Conservative Party leader.

Carrington was a lot more than just a celebrity.

Even before his very lengthy, high powered political career he had been awarded the Military Cross as a Major in the Grenadier Guards.

https://www.theguardian.com/...-carrington-obituary

Both he and Nott offered their resignations at the time of the Argentinian invasion of the Falklands, Thatcher persuaded Nott to stay in post but couldn't do the same with Carrington.

Ironically, when papers were subsequently released under the 30 year rule it turned out that Carrington had argued forcefully against the decision to scrap HMS Endurance whilst Nott had backed it. It was the announcement of the intended scrapping that convinced the Argentines that the UK had given up on the Falklands and wouldn't contest an occupation of them.

He was by all accounts a highly intelligent and humorous individual. It would have been well worth hearing his views on Boris' stint as Foreign Secretary. Cool

Odd if it did, as Nott's resignation was not accepted. He remained as Defence Secretary throughout the conflict and was replaced the following January when he decided he would be retiring from the Commons at the next election.

I must have got confused about Nott - to be honest, all I can remember is the tremendous amount of stick he got in the press at the time.

A Bristol 'Legend' and far better known in Bristol for starting and running The Bamboo Club in Bristol in the 1960's and 70's..... He did more to break down racial barriers and for helping to fight segregation in Bristol than any politician.

http://bristol.wikia.com/wiki/Bamboo_Club

My parents lived in St Pauls when first married and kept many friends there after moving to Yate.......I remember going to the Bamboo Club kids' christmas parties with my brothers and being white, treated
like a prince. ..... That first generation of West Indian immigrants were/are wonderful people.

Very fine actor.

I watched the BBC "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy" and "Smiley's People" TV series adaptations again recently and it reminded me just how very good he was.

So sad , only 18. RIP.

''Ellie Soutter, one of the most exciting snowboarding prospects in the world, has died at the age of just 18. The tragic news was announced in a statement by British Ski and Snowboard. The statement did not elaborate on a cause of death but described the passing as “sudden” and includes information about the United Kingdom’s suicide prevention hotline. ITV’s Mark Williams-Thomas reports that Soutter took her own life and was found in a remote wooded area near her home in France. Soutter died on her 18th birthday, July 25th''

Using the term "celebrity" loosely here, former Conservative MP Sir Peter Tapsell has died aged 88. MP for Louth and Horncastle he had served continuously in Parliament from 1966 until 2015. 50 years an MP without contributing anything to the nation is an impressive record. He was my local MP for a few years.

This news came as a surprise to me, as I thought the whole band were killed in a plane crash in the 1970's.
Apparently it was only 3 members of the band who died, and they reforned in 1987.

The death has been announced of author and television writer David Yallop, who died on Friday 31st August at the age of 81.

David wrote ten episodes of 'Minder', including 'The Loneliness Of The long Distance Entrepreneur', 'Guess Who's Coming To Pinner' and 'The Wrong Goodbye', which was the very last episode to star Dennis Waterman as Terry McCann in 1988.

He also wrote several episodes of 'Crown Court' in the seventies, and later went on to write for 'EastEnders', where he attracted controversy by writing an unused storyline in which multiple characters were to be killed in an IRA bombing - the BBC sacked him, but Yallop successfully sued for breach of contract.

He was also a prolific writer, and his books included co-writing Graham Chapman's autobiography 'A Liar's Autobiography: Volume IV', as well as writing the football book 'How They Stole The Game' in 1999 - one of the very first publications to reveal evidence of the corruption surrounding the election of Sepp Blatter as FIFA President in 1998.

Of all the guest actors to appear in 'The Professionals', Liz Fraser was surely the most gorgeous and funniest of all. Her brilliant flirtatious performance as Marge with Martin Shaw steals the show in the 1979 episode 'Backtrack'...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VxRqH2jZibY

...and is just as funny as anything she did with the greats like Tony Hancock, Peter Sellers, Sid James, Kenneth Williams and others.

"Oooh, I could 'elp you, lover!"

Liz Fraser - a comedy great.

Probably, but that misses the main point, which is that Deliverance was arguably the only good film he has ever appeared in. One critic wrote of it that "McKinney and Coward are two of the most terrifying villains ever in film history" which, considering that practically every film has a villain, is quite a comment.

And who can forget Medlock's comment early in the film "I've never been insured. I don't need insurance!"

(Edit; just remembered a curious coincidence which is that when I was at school, two other pupils - both in the same year, although a year below mine - had the surnames McKinney and Coward.)

I didn't miss the point, main or otherwise. I am fully aware Deliverance was the only decent anything in which Reynolds featured - but didn't say so because the guy's just died. By the way, I think you'll find Medlock said he "didn't believe in" insurance, not that he didn't need it.

And turned down the role of James Bond (at the time of Sean Connery's departure from the role) and John McClane (Die Hard).

Does anyone know if 'Dougal and the Blue Cat' (in which Fenella Fielding had a speaking part) has ever been shown on TV? Despite being made as long ago as 1971 it seems to have vanished without trace. I saw it at the cinema in that year and remember it for being far more creepy and scary than the TV series on which it was based had been.

Thanks for your advice sir but it is probably true to say that just about any film ever made is available on DVD.
The interesting question is why none of the Freeview channels (and maybe the ones that have to be paid for, such as Sky) want to show a film that was based on a very popular children's TV series.

Yesterday, I went to a book-signing and Q&A of actors who'd appeared in 'The Professionals', organised by the Misty Moon Film Society which took place at the Cinema Museum in Lambeth.

Beforehand, they played this really rather lovely and funny tribute to Dudley Sutton...

Well, some of you might believe this and some might not but I claim sightings of Chas & Dave and Dudley Sutton in the same pub in the 80s, though not at the same time. This was the Crown & Cushion in Chipping Norton.

DS strolled in with some friends on a Sunday lunchtime, making a rather actorish entry in a very long coat and scarf. I can't remember what he drank but Chas and Dave were certainly working their way through pints of 6X in the corner of the lounge, taking a break from recording at the studios in the town. It was my stepbrother who clocked them – I wouldn't have known them from any of the other drinkers, so ordinary were they in their appearance and behaviour.

The beer mat that they signed is in the house somewhere...

The pub is just round the corner from where the Chipping Norton Recording Studios used to be from 1971 to 1999, back in the years when this was quite a musical hot-bed.

Ripping off almost all this info from Wikipedia, it seems that Chippy saw the recording of these chart hits, among others...

'Baker Street' by Gerry Rafferty,
'In The Army Now' by Status Quo,
'Too Shy' by Kajagoogoo,
'I Should Have Known Better' by Jim Diamond,
'Creep' by Radiohead,
'I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles' by The Proclaimers,
'Perfect' by Fairground Attraction,
'Promise Me' by Beverley Craven,
'(I Just) Died In Your Arms Tonight' by Cutting Crew,
'Eighteen With A Bullet' by Pete Wingfield,
'Bye, Bye, Baby (Baby Goodbye)' by Bay City Rollers,

and further material by...

Dexy's Midnight Runners, Duran Duran, Marianne Faithfull, Wet Wet Wet, Jeff Beck, XTC, Alison Moyet, Therapy? and plenty of others.

XTC were always big fans of this recording studio, and I'm pretty sure Lilac Time were too.

A man who never forgot his Armenian roots and did an awful lot for the country, including humanitarian work. So much so that he was not only granted Armenian citizenship but also became an Ambassador for the country to the UN and other overseas organisations: http://ungeneva.mfa.am/en/ambassador/.
