Cyril Beavon (Wolves, Headington/Oxford Utd and Banbury Utd) or Reply Privately

Ex-Oxford United defender Cyril Beavon has died at the age of 80...

He joined Headington United in 1959 from Wolverhampton Wanderers and went on to play over 500 appearances over the next ten years, forming a defensive partnership with Ron Atkinson and Maurice Kyle when (as Oxford United FC) they won the Southern League and election to Division Four of the Football League. He also appeared for England at youth international level.

He joined Banbury United in 1969. His grandson, Stuart Beavon, presently plays for Coventry City.

Re: [oxpete] Cyril Beavon (Wolves, Headington/Oxford Utd and Banbury Utd) or Reply Privately

Cyril Beavon
born 27th September 1937 Barnsley
died Friday 22nd December 2017, aged 80

Beavon joined Oxford United from Wolverhampton Wanderers in January 1959, after failing to make an appearance for their first team in his four years there.

He spent ten years at the Manor Ground, helping the club to the Southern League championship in 1961-62, following which the club was elected to the Football League. Beavon played in every single game in that season and 461 in total for Oxford. (271+2 with 7 goals in the Football League)

Beavon left Oxford United for non league Banbury United in 1969. Beavon was there for three seasons before injury forced him to retire.

Beavon did a number of jobs after football including a period as both a milkman and a postman.

Beavon was the father of former player Stuart Beavon Sr., and grandfather of Stuart Beavon Jr.
