Vernon Athletic or Reply Privately

I have come across this team whilst researching the Southern Counties Amateur Championship. As far as I can ascertain they played at Preston Park in Brighton and played in the Sussex County League in the 1920's & 1930's. Interested to know a little more about them - for example were they a works team? Any info welcomed

The first newspaper reference I can find for Vernon Athletic is in season 1903-04. They were members of the Brighton & Hove Football Association but it's not clear if they were members of a league in their early days. In 1906-07 they and their reserves were playing in the Brighton & Hove League.

By 1908-09 they were playing in the West Sussex Senior League and that was their league up to the start of WWI and immediately after the resumption of football.

They joined the Sussex County League in 1920-21 and were members until they failed to be re-elected at the end of 1936-37. The report adds that Vernon Athletic stated that "next season they would possibly have an enclosed ground." Preston Park is referred through the years and it is possible it was just a collection of unenclosed pitches.

Vernon joined the Brighton & District League for 1937-38 and were there in the final pre-WWII season. After the war they rejoined the league but had slipped down to the Intermediate Division by 1949-50 and appear to have joined the Brighton Minor League the following season. The newspaper trail runs out in 1952-53.

AS for the name: There is a Vernon Terrace in Brighton and Bruce Vernon-Wentworth was MP for Brighton 1893-1906 Is there still a Vernon-Wentworth Cup?

Thanks for the replies. Also had an email which advised they later played at East Brighton Park, where Whitehawk now played. Origins are via the Vernon Terrace area of Brighton and almost certainly not a works team.

Preston Park is an interesting place. I went there over 30 years ago and there was a velodrome around the outside of a cricket pitch, with a covered terrace on one side. A football pitch was marked out near the cover.
According to Google Maps it hasn't changed much over the years but the roof has gone.
