Justin Edinburgh has become the first managerial casualty of the new season, paying the price for Northampton Town losing their opening four league games.

The right decision IMO. With the players close to taking charge of formation and tactics he had to go. Parrish should be making a grovelling apology idc.

Quite agree.
The first two home performances were shambolic. Tactically naive and has caused friction on the training ground.
Best get rid now, rather than later when we would be further adrift.

Another Parish failure......how much longer can we continue to put up with his bizarre decision making.

As for his appointing Hodgson, I despair.

Another season of struggle and toil in the offing.

So much for the lauded change in direction for Palace.

Paddy Power offered 66/1 on Ugo Ehiogu taking over at Birmingham. I consider these to be poor odds, as he died in April.

Rene Weiler, now ex Anderlecht, coiuld be among the favourites to take over. Rene was sacked just a few months after winning the Belgian League with Anderlecht, who are 9 points adrift of leaders Club Brugge, after just a handful of games.

Not the way the owners of LCFC are likely to do things. They had little option but to give Shakespeare the job after what he achieved when Ranieri was given the boot but sadly the writing was on the wall when results started going wrong after the CL exit against Atletico.

One quote from the interview:

"There are clubs in the Premier League which would be good jobs but also in the Championship and League One."

Nice to know he might be willing to dirty his hands with a League One club.

After all, what would he learn from working up from Non League? I mean what good did it do the likes of Martin O'Neill, Nigel Clough, Chris Wilder…….

I have broadly the same feeling to this appointment as I had when Ranieri was appointed: underwhelming.

However, perhaps the owners know best....

The last theee manager appointments have worked out very well in some form or other:
1. Nigel Pearson got us promoted and crucially kept is up in a miracle ending to the 14-15 season (and they really could have pulled the trigger at the low-point of that season, but didn't).
2. Claudio Ranieri - need say no more.
3. Craig Shakespeare - kept us up with a stunning comeback from March. Oh and turned the Champions League tie with Seville to get us into the QF.

I think Everton should go for Bilic (ex-player, too). He'd do a decent job there.

Moyes favourite for the West Ham job.... seems to be a problem with a lot of WH fans.

If you're going to/been to a Hampshire Premier League match, I'd really appreciate you filling in a questionnaire - available in the Groundhopping/General section, or just PM me for a copy. Thanks.

Is it any wonder there aren't many English contenders for the top Premier League jobs when both Allardyce and Pardew keep getting jobs like this instead of young British talent getting a chance.

Re: [Richard Rundle] Parting Company 17/18 or Reply Privately

A young British talent blew his 5-week audition at Goodison.
On the wider theme, though, it was interesting to hear ambitious young manager Michael Appleton's perspective on Sky earlier in the week. Basically that an up and coming British manager's best, and possibly only, hope of getting a Premier job is to take a club up from the Championship. He wasn't going to do that with Oxford any time soon so the chance to be a number 2 at a PL club, and at least be involved at the top level, proved more tempting than building his reputation even further in the lower leagues.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/42434708

I think the timid second-half performance at Everton on Monday proved one embarrassment too far.

But the board are as much to blame for this season's shambles as anyone else, the prolonged faffing about concerning the transfer of Sigurdsson being just one example. £45mil doesn't look quite the bargain it did back in August, because the losses inflicted by relegation could put that into the shade. Too many of my Swansea-supporting friends think they'll 'consolidate' in the Championship ready for the jump back up - I personally think there's more chance they'll follow the example of Leeds, Forest or Sheffield Wednesday (or maybe Sunderland?) and could drop again...

I feel for Paul Clement, but if he had to go then the board should have been dynamic and sacked him while Chris Coleman was still available. If Pulis is offered (and takes) the job, and if Alan Curtis is happy to work with him, there might still be a slim chance.

Whatever, it's home to Crystal Palace on Saturday. If they don't win that (or at Watford on 30th) there are just too many difficult matches coming up to offer much hope...

with the club having already sourced a replacement, the local rag reckons on either Chris Powell or the Cowley brothers.

Must say i've never heard of a manager being sent on gardening leave in these circumstances.

Gary Megson at Bolton Wanderers springs to mind, and Ally McCoist at Rangers? Basically suspended on full pay until compensation can be agreed.

Remember them both but it seems a strange way of doing things because there is surely no way back for a manager that is treated this way so why not just sack him then sort out finances later which is the norm.?

I agree it's a very strange way of doing things. Megson was out of the game for months (on full pay), before taking over at Sheffield Wednesday. Maybe Bolton couldn't afford to pay him off with a lump sum?

And Rangers were in complete melt down when McCoist left so that is probably the answer.

Watford have sacked Marco Silva.

Perhaps the daftest reason in history, they’re blaming Everton!!!

They are 10th in the Premier as well

They tapped him up, he agreed in private with them to go (after only 9 games!), Everton then made an official bid (or bids) for him before Watford said no every time. Since then he lost his focus, the players lost their focus and the form has been dreadful. At the moment the club is going to be relegated so something had to change. Everton aren't the reason but they were the catalyst.

I see that the WBA owner has sacked the chairman and chief exec. I don't think there should be anywhere near as many sacking s as there are, but its nearly always the manager that carries the can. The people who appoint managerial failure after managerial failure always seem immune from paying for their mistakes!

Maybe we'll start to see more sackings at boardroom level from now on...

Alan Pardew must be feeling a little insecure now that the people who appointed him have been given the elbow. One league win in his three months there probably won't help either.

Confirmation, if it were needed, that even managers who are doing their job fairly well aren't safe from being sacked by knee-jerk chairmen or put under pressure by impatient supporters.

Peterborough are presently just four points off a play-off place with two games in hand, and they've only lost one of their eight league matches played in 2018 (admittedly, they've drawn six). On top of that, they won 3-1 away at Aston Villa in the FA Cup, so it has hardly been a bad period for them. And Grant McCann has been a long-serving loyal servant to the club, both on and off the pitch.

I'm presently reading the book 'I Believe In Miracles' by Daniel Taylor, about the first three or four years of Brian Clough's reign as manager of Nottingham Forest. In Clough's seventeen fixtures managed in his first season, Forest won only three. And in the forty-one fixtures he managed throughout 1975, Forest won just eleven. His predecessor - Allan Brown - had won fifteen at the same stage. If Forest had shown then the sort of impatience and lack of class that Peterborough have done here, I doubt that Clough would've even kept his job long enough to win them the promotion he did in 1977.

On the positive side, I'm going to guess that Grant McCann won't be out of work for too long.

Brian Clough was a different era to the panic sacking owners of today. Howard Kendall (Everton) had reached the bottom of the barrel in 1982 but they stuck with him and he won 2 titles, the FA Cup and the ECWC. ALex Ferguson, everyone knows how close he came to the sack in 1990

What they gonna do now? Bring in Harry Redknapp?!

I suspect the board are maybe three months too late - they should have been doing something at about the same time Swansea were giving themselves a well-needed kick up the backside. Southampton have really sleep-walked into their present position. They've only won once in their last seventeen league matches, and have gone eight home matches without a win - properly dreadful form.

After next week's FA Cup match away at Wigan (I don't fancy their chances at all), their final remaining seven league fixtures are all difficult-looking:

West Ham (away)
Arsenal (away)
Chelsea (home)
Leicester City (away)
AFC Bournemouth (home)
Everton (away)
Man.City (home)

They might get a draw at West Ham, and they might get a draw at home to Bournemouth. But I can easily see them losing the rest of them.

What they gonna do now? Bring in Harry Redknapp?!

For instant impact they could do far worse than go for Marco Silva. Unless he's sitting tight to replace Big Sam in the summer.

Unlike Oxford United who have now gone a leisurely 48 days and counting without appointing a new manager, Saints will be eager to fill the gap asap. So it'll have to be a manager presently out-of-work, and Marco Silva would certainly be one of the best candidates in that group.

After fifty-two days without appointing a new manager, the Oxford Mail newspaper has got all excited about SkyBet slashing the odds on Sven-Goran Eriksson being the next new Oxford United manager. He is third-favourite at 4-1.

Of the first twenty comments from OUFC fans on the newspaper website, eighteen are most definitely against the idea. Of the two fans posting positive comments, one admits that he's only in agreement cos he'll want to perve over Sven's wife!

At least there's some speculation down your way. There's hardly been a word of who's going to replace the ignorant, arrogant, foul mouthed **** at Ipswich.
As I don't have to suffer the crap his team produces, I can be quite polite about him, unlike the poor sods that have just gone five home games without a goal.

According to the guy at TWTD, Mowbray is the favourite within the club hierarchy. He'd be a decent appointment I think.

Everyone is just waiting for MM to leave and there will be a collective sigh of relief when he does. It will be interesting to see whether crowds pick up again.

I'd happily take a high risk of being relegated if it meant getting rid of McCarthy. He's destroying the club with his brand of football and his relationship with the fans.

Most Ipswich fans know he's done a fair job with the resources he's had. But they now hate him and he hates them, so no way back.
As for Tony M, lovely bloke who would command massive respect, but sadly his CV probably reads "never let anyone down, but never performed miracles either", Unless the owner is prepared to loosen the purse strings then 16 more years of mediocrity awaits. But why leave an average club for another average club?

True, and there have been positive moments - that last minute winner at Watford in 2014/15 for one (I was in the home end and had to sit on my hands)...

Unfortunately it's been largely downhill from there and the main memory of his time in charge for me is watching us play away at Millwall and hoofing it up to David McGoldrick about 20 or 30 times during the match, only for Danny Shittu to head it away with ease on every occasion. Not sure I've ever felt more sorry for a player on the pitch as I did that day for McGoldrick.

Probably went the same way as all the other talks Tiger has been having with candidates over the past fifty-eight days.

Simon Grayson, Frank Lampard, Sven Goran Eriksson, Jaap Stam, Craig Bellamy, Duncan Ferguson, Kevin Phillips, Stuart McCall, Tim Sherwood, David Unsworth, Sol Campbell and maybe a dozen others have all been at various degrees of “on the brink” over the past two months.

The jury is still out concerning this new owner, but the longer he (and he alone) drags out this process, the more it looks like he really doesn’t understand how to run a football club. I guess we’ll know by the end of today, and a win at Fratton Park on Sunday will have everyone singing his genius (except me, obviouslyMad). But I get the real feeling that Tiger is just the latest in a long line of OUFC owners who prove to be out-of-depth/useless/downright dangerous...

Re: [leohoenig] Parting Company 17/18 or Reply Privately

Karl Robinson has been named as the new Oxford United manager.

Probably the best choice they could have made, actually - he’s done relatively well at Charlton Athletic this season, keeping them up at the right end of the division (and they’re not the easiest club to lead), and has won one automatic promotion and two play-off finishes in his time leading MK Dons. So plenty of positive experience of League One. Certainly a better choice than Bellamy, Sven or any of the other jokers after the job. If he’s going to have a problem (along with too many useless players on the books), it’s going to be with his new boss Tiger Chairman - at only 37 years old, Karl Robinson might not have the experience to deal with Tiger’s ego.

Hopefully, he’ll get off to a losing start on Sunday, though I’ve a horrible feeling I’m going to be in for yet more ribbing from my colleagues at work come Monday morning...

Certain WBA fans said they'd rather be in the 2nd division playing attractive football than watching the mundane dross under Pulis. They've got their wish, Ipswich could well struggle under a new manager, but when the scores are level the fans want an attacking option, not a defensive one like MM used to do. They are resigned to the fact the owner doesn't want to throw anymore money at it, so next best is to be entertained on a Saturday afternoon. 5 home games without a goal for the home side sums him up.

Ipswich can't be relegated and can't reach the play-offs (mathematically yes but I've more chance of meeting Elvis) so leaving now looks like a good decision after everything he's had to endure from the Ipswich fans. The management merry-go-round will start turning at the end of the season and Mick will be back in a job before long.

To be fair to Ipswich fans 5.5 years is long enough most clubs would have sent him down the road 3 years or more ago.

Not really sure he's had to endure that much to be honest - I think the fans have been pretty patient and have only really turned on him this season. On the other hand, we've had to endure the worst football seen at the club since John Duncan in the late 80s. And he's not blameless for the breakdown in relations between him and the fans - his reaction to us scoring at Norwich earlier this season was to shout 'f*** off' at the Town supporters.

I appreciate him keeping us up and the 14/15 season was probably the best since the Royle years, but I think it's fair to say the vast majority of supporters are very glad he's gone!

Ian Evatt was appointed Caretaker Manager for the final 3 games. His manager's column in last night's programme included him explaining why he's wearing a suit at these 3 games. Crazy

Much as I like and admire him I think Chesterfield's next "permanent" managerial appointment is so crucially important, managerial experience and a record of achievement as a manager is vital.

I'd suggest a working knowledge of the National League is also imperative for any candidate. It's a very different challenge to the FL.

He had a relegation release clause in his contract. If he insisted on this then he probably wasn't the right man for the job, if Barnsley insisted on this then they will save money on his salary next season.

Then again, the improvement in league placing from when he took over was worth around £20m to the club in prize money alone. It was probably a good move to bring him in six months ago but, for all sorts of reasons, also a good move to replace him now.

I thought Lambert was brought in to Stoke to turn the club around and that meant an immediate return from the Championship should they be relegated, which they were. Stoke fans must be wondering what next for the club now Lambert has been sacked.

Pullis might have been criticised by Stoke supporters but he turned them in to a comfortable mid table Premier League side.

Lincoln are a horrible team. Their run to the cup quarter finals as underdogs last season hid this, so everybody thought they were this amazingly skilled and hardworking side. No, they just play proper direct football, using Rhead as a battering ram (which works in Non League, and to an extent in League Two). It will be interesting once the Cowleys do get poached, whether their new employers are aware of all this, or will indeed get found out at Championship/League One level.

Another bitter rival fan. Two things, batteri g ram centre forwards can work at any level, John Fashanu used to great effect at Wimbledon in the 80s, they did very well, won a trophy called the FA Cup I seem to recall. As for the Cowleys being poached, I would imagine their new employees will have done their homework prior to hiring them, just a hunch though.
Put it this way, when the Cowleys took over, Lincoln City were a club stagnating in the lower half of the Vanarama National. You don’t need me to tell you the effect they have had not only on the club but the City of Lincoln and surrounding area too.
Maybe, that is your problem ?

100% agree about Evans. I can’t stand the man and can’t wait the day this vile creature is out of our club.

Matt Rhead not a thug??? The man is a disgrace and a coward as was evidenced by his snidy assault on the Shrewsbury keeper at Wembley.

I would not say Rhead is generally a thug. Yes, the incident at Wembley was awful, but very isolated. He gives out a lot of less violent stick during games, but no less than what goes on in any other match AND he takes his fair share back, again no worse than anything else that goes on.
You refer to Lincoln as thugs ie plural, who are the rest ?

No matter what you think my 'problem' is, they are still a horrible team. The late Keith Alexander played long ball, direct football at Lincoln, and did as well as the Cowleys have done this season, several seasons in a row. KA didn't employ thugs in his team to do so...

Here's another example of Rhead being a thug - https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x5cdw96

Regarding the effect on the city, what you're sayng is that it's a city full of plastics who only come out when the team are doing well... where have they been the last 15 years?

Keith Alexander, there was a legend....Rest his soul.

That challenge from read is hardly thuggery on 3 counts; 1) His eyes are focussed on the ball. 2) It is not even a lashing out but leading with his elbow. And 3) It was against Joey Barton so it should be criticised for not being more violent ;)

Yes, a lot of folk have come out the woodwork - it happens sadly. Those who went three times a season are going more regularly, and more importantly, the increase in youngsters attending is huge. I would imagine it was the same (Albeit smaller scale) when Boston were promoted to the FL - but things happen and of course those who jumped on the bandwagon have jumped off again. I am sure once the momentum with Lincoln is lost, then they will lose many of their 'Bandwagon jumpers' and the red and white stripes in the City will revert to the usual premiership shirts that are all to prevalent in our towns and cities, irrespective of where they are.
I hope that is not for some time, if at all but we all know reality.

Have a nice day, and enjoy the summer.

Massive League 2 shock. After 12 years in charge, Paul Tisdale has resigned at Exeter City.

They wanted to get rid of him about 18 months ago but they weren't able to afford the compensation he was due for early termination of his contract. Instead they served him with two years' notice as the contract required. Subsequently he has been offered a new deal but he has not taken them up on it, not surprisingly given that he is reported to have turned down offers from much higher up the league.

There's a bit of an experience vacuum now at Exeter with Steve Perryman having just retired.

John Askey leaves Macc to take over at Shrewsbury. Excellent manager but virtually a one club man until now, it'll be interesting to see how he does in a different environment and at a higher level.

Looks like after 5 games (6 if you include the League Cup) the decision to replace Heckingbottom was 100% spot on: https://www.bbc.co.uk/...l/championship/table and that is before you check out how we play football....

Lots of happy fans in Suffolk this Morning.

Never come across such a hated Manager as big Mick, but he hates the fans just as much.

Good riddance from all of us!!!!!

Be careful what you wish for.

Out of interest, how are Ipswich fans feeling about Mick McCarthy leaving now they sit rooted to the bottom of the league?

Still glad he left. The football being produced was dire and more and more fans were stopping going to games.

The issue now is more about the replacement not being the right person. We were heavily linked with Jack Ross, who appeared to fit the ethos of the club in terms of style of play and using youth players. Unfortunately we've ended up with someone whose teams are increasingly playing the same style of football as McCarthy's, whilst also refusing to use any of the highly-rated youngsters.
