Friday Night Rugby or Reply Privately

While Friday fixtures are commonplace and well publicised at the higher levels - Premiership, Championship, Pro 12 and cup competitions involving those sides - they are rare at the lower reaches and not always shown on fixture websites which still list the games for Saturday. Please post on here if you know of any changes. I'll start the ball rolling with three matches I know of:

20th November - Lichfield v Nuneaton - National League 3 Midlands - 2000

2016

22nd January - Sutton Coldfield v Market Drayton - National League 3 Midlands - 2000

19th February - Northampton Old Scouts v Wellingborough - Midlands 1 East - 1930

The latter two are both are returned favours after their first meetings were played on a Friday, Wellingborough last weekend.

The opposition is in fact Newport (Salop) RUFC. The reverse fixture Newport v Sutton was played on a Friday night because of World Cup games on the following Saturday, but the venue was switched to Market Drayton's ground as they had "better quality floodlights", apparently!

Some re-arranged Friday night matches in Wales during Six Nations:

5th February
Division 1 West Central - Seven Sisters v Trebanos

12th February
Championship - Llanharan v Bridgend Athletic - 1915
Division 2 West - Carmarthen Athletic v Penclawdd - 1930

This list may grow nearer those dates as a lot of rugby matches in Wales have been postponed this season. There are some more Friday night matches in March which I won't list just yet as I expect more fixtures to be added nearer the time.

England Counties XV is a representative team open to English players who play in the County Championship and Third Tier (National League One) or below at club level. You could call them rugby's equivalent of England C. I would guess France Federale is open to players below their top two divisions also. There is a Wikipedia page about the England Counties XV:

St Benedicts (North Lancs/Cumbria) have two midweek home fixtures this month:

Wednesday 13th April vs Aspatria (2nd v 1st)
Tuesday 26th April vs Hawcoat Park

Advisable to check both before travelling. Aspatria game, listed as 1500 which I doubt, is mentioned on both clubs' Pitchero sites but not RFU site while Hawcoat Park date is on RFU but not Pitchero!

The forum on Aspatria's site is a good source of info on all matters in the North Lancs/Cumbria division, as officials from several clubs contribute, and will probably have updates nearer the time. Bennies have such a backlog on fixtures, partly due to their cup run, but mainly because their pitch is especially susceptable to waterlogging. They will be praying for some dry weather ahead of the national semi-final this weekend.

Re: [AndrewG] Friday Night Rugby or Reply Privately

In Wales plenty of midweek matches in the SWALEC Leagues as teams play catch-up after so many postponements this season. There are some in the week leading up to the Carmarthenshire Hop which may suit those arriving early.

Division One East Central:
15/4 Rhiwbina v Rumney
29/4 Heol y Cyw v Mountain Ash
29/4 Treorchy v Llantwit Fardre
4/5 Cardiff HSOB v Ystrad Rhondda (1900)

Division One West Central:
19/4 Seven Sisters v Trebanos (1830)
20/4 Kenfig Hill v Skewen (1915)

Division One West:
14/4 Whitland v Kidwelly
20/4 Crymych v Llanelli Wanderers (1845)
29/4 Llanelli Wanderers v Gorseinon (1915)
4/5 Llangennech v Waunarlwydd (1915)

Division Two East:
6/4 Fleur de Lys v Abertillery Blaenau/Gwent (1815)
20/4 Ynysddu v Cwmbran (1900)
27/4 Cwmbran v Abertillery Blaenau/Gwent (1915)
27/4 Pontypool United v Abertysswg Falcons (2000)

Division Two East Central:
13/4 Llantrisant v Dowlais (1915)

Division Two West Central:
13/4 Maesteg Celtic v Cwmllynfell (1830)
20/4 Nantymoel v Maesteg Celtic (1830)
27/4 Cwmgors v Nantymoel (1830)
4/5 Penlan v Maesteg Celtic (1830)

Division Two West:
13/4 Amman United v Llanybydder (1915)
20/4 Tycroes v Amman United (1900)
26/4 Llanybydder v Hendy (1915)
27/4 Pontarddulais v Mumbles (1830)
27/4 Pontyberem v Tycroes (1915)
4/5 Penclawdd v Amman United (1915)

Please check these fixtures again before travelling if planning to attend any of them. The kick-off times I haven't mentioned are currently listed on WRU site as 1430 which is unlikely in midweek, hopefully they will change nearer the date.

Re: [cherryhopper] Friday Night Rugby or Reply Privately

Missed a game I could have got to last Friday had I known about it:
25/11 Broadstreet 9-14 Nuneaton - National League 3 Midlands
Only found out about this when looking at Nuns website tonight as their match vs Derby, which should be on 2nd XV pitch as Nuneaton Town FC are also home, is one of my options for this Saturday.

At least I can bring news of another Friday fixture in the new year:
20th January - Chard v Weston-Super-Mare - South-West 1 West (1930)
Ground in town centre close to Chard Town FC. Don't expect it to be a close contest though as it's bottom v top and Weston won the first game 70-0.

Kick-off is 7pm. Entry free. Darlington issued on the occasion of my only visit to BM for RU but they've since suffered a couple of relegations. This will be the club's first game at the ground since its revamp.

Midlands 1 West:

Friday 13th January - Sutton Coldfield v Moseley Oak (1930)
Friday 24th March - Sutton Coldfield v Bournville (1945)

These matches will presumably be played on the new international standard pitch where I saw them last season as opposed to the regular 1st XV pitch which I ticked in November and doesn't have lights.

This Saturday, 14th January, Sutton Coldfield is hosting Leicester Tigers v Bristol Premiership Academy fixture, kick-off is 1230 allowing for a possible double with football on 3G, Sutton Coldfield Town and Boldmere St Michaels both at home.

Not a night game but Friday nonetheless:

7th April, on the eve of the Melrose Sevens, a ten-a-side VETS Tournament takes place at Battery Field, Annay Road, Melrose TD6 9LW. First tie at 11:30am. With an emphasis on fun, there's always the opportunity to see some familiar faces from international rugby on the field of play and enjoy social rugby at its very best.

There are two rugby fields on Annay Road, on the north-eastern edge of Melrose. According to the map on a board outside the main ground, Battery Field is the one furthest from the town.

Weds 26th April - Maesteg Harlequins v Bonymaen

Booked 25th off work hoping to go to the second leg and keeping fingers crossed that the first leg is a close affair so it will still be all to play for.

Rhydyfelin won promotion in the Eastern play-off, Treorchy failing to overturn a 42-24 1st leg defecit only managing a 13-10 win in their home leg.

Buyer beware considering the number of County Cup ties that end up not taking place - although I'd be relatively positive where clubs have actively agreed a non-Saturday date to suit. The Rectory is well worth visiting. It staged Combined Services v All Blacks as recently as the 1990s, and both sides still resemble a football league ground of thet era.

Friday 26th October:
Pro 14 - Ospreys v Connacht
2005 @ The Brewery Field, Bridgend

Ospreys can't use the Liberty Stadium in a 72 hour window before Swansea City home games and didn't want to play this on the Sunday as they wouldn't be able to field their internationals less than a week before the autumn series begins.

You mean a forum like this? None that I know of, you might be better off asking somebody like Feversham Lens or Andrew G as they watch more rugby than me. I get most of my fixture info off the RFU website or All Wales Sport, which I find is more reliable than the WRU site.

I did come across the 'Yorkshire Rugby Forum' a few years ago, and refer to it occasionally. I suspect it won't be of much relevance to someone based in south-west Wales.

Re: [R.S.Cavendish] Friday Night Rugby or Reply Privately

I am not aware of any sites like this one, particularly focussing on groundhopping. There are some decent websites covering the higher echelons of the semi-pro game in England. NCA rugby covers levels three and four, whilst the rolling maul forum has coverage down to level five. As Feversham Lens has indicated there are forums regionally at some lower levels - seem to remember there is one covering Durham and Northumberland. In Wales, the oval zone covers lower levels in north and mid Wales.

My browser makes creating hyperlinks extremely fiddly, but some links I am sure you can copy and paste.

Friday 5 October

Swansea Uplands v Baglan in the WRU Plate.

A nice ground but superb two-storey clubhouse with brilliant viewing of the pitch. The building was completed only a year or so back due in total to a 2.25 million legacy from a former committeeman.

They have three full fixture programmes on a Friday night during the autumn internationals on 9th, 16th and 23rd November and a further two full Friday night programmes during the Six Nations on 8th February and 8th March. As well as this there is one Premiership game every Friday usually kicking off at 7:05pm and being shown live on BBC2 Wales, the next two being Llandovery v Neath on 19th and Ebbw Vale v Merthyr on 26th. Presumably BBC Wales have lost the rights to show their regional teams in the Pro 14.

Rhiwbina v Glamorgan Wanderers tonight is being played on the 3G pitch at Llanishen RFC (1945). I think this was always the venue rather than a weather related switch as Rhiwbina's own Caedelyn Park ground only has three floodlight pylons on one side unless they have added more since the Streetview photo was taken. Presumably next Friday's match vs Rumney will also be at Llanishen.
