Who do you think is the best football presenter/ commentator on TV? or Reply Privately

Watching BT Sport last night I was quite pleased with the coverage and overall team of Jake Humphrey and Ray Stubbs presenting and particularly Martin Allen, I thought his commentary was very good.

I agree with you, also watched the game and was quite impressed with Martin Allen's knowledge of lower league football. Obviously had done his homework on the Brackley Town team beforehand

It must have been a surprise if Martin Allen managed to talk about something other than his favourite subject, i.e. Martin Allen
That said, when I as the supporter of a club Allen nearly ruined, got to talk to Adrian Whitbread, who worked with Allen for a long time, we soon started talking about him. WHitbread clearly could have a lot to say about Allen's management style, but he kept most of it quiet.

From what I gather, he'd never heard of Hednesford Town. Not that knowledgable, then...

Yes there is some reference on The Hednesford Twitter about this. If he did say that I would be surprised rather than shocked but wouldn't dispute it. It's usually the commentators patronising the Non league clubs in cup ties. I watched the whole game including the build up as it was the 1st Time I had watched a game on BT Sport and obviously missed that comment if it was made. I thought the coverage was very good including Martin Allen's analysis and can only base my comments on What I did hear rather than what I didn't.

In fairness most of the people I come across on the UCL circuit fail to pronounce Cogenhoe correctly too.

Steve Claridge is pretty well informed on the FL Show.
Adrian Chiles is the best presenter. Always taking the p*ss out of Roy Keane, which is no bad thing!

The always excellent James Richardson is being interviewed by Stuart Maconie on Radio 6Music's 'Radcliffe & Maconie' programme later today, Wednesday 26th July, between 1pm and 4pm.

He has come up with some great one liners. When Liverpool beat Besiktas 8-0 in the champions league, he said it was like an entry in Victoria Beckham's diary. 'Ate nothing!'.
He had some great arguments with Gabrielle Marcotti whilst presenting Italian football on Channel 4.

I thought James Richardson was great on Channel 4 Serie A coverage and it's a shame that he's never got a more high profile job, he'd be great on MOTD!

One of the really interesting things he talked about on 6Music on Wednesday was about the tendancy for football programmes on tv and radio to rely upon ex-players for their supposed specialist knowledge. Richardson said that during his time on Channel 4 and with his own podcast, he has always tried to use local football journalists rather than ex-players - as he says, many ex-players tend to be out-of-date with a lot of their information and tell stories that aren't anywhere near as interesting as those from your average journo. During Gazzetta Football Italia, James Richardson became good friends with Paul Ince, but other than that I think he has always had a healthy dis-respect for most footballers, so I don't think those high up in the ego-inflating world of MOTD would consider him "one of us".

I think it might be just a little unfair to tar all ex-players with the dull-and-thick brush: John Hartson, Pat Nevin, Gavin Peacock and maybe Lee Dixon and Jermaine Jenas are all fairly interesting in what they have to say. But I do agree with him about many ex-players on tv being overrated in voicing their opinions. And yes, I agree with you that it's a crying shame that James Richardson hasn't a higher profile job on the goggle-box.

But English football is not his speciality. He does work for BT Sport, the European Football Show.

I have a healthy disregard for most commentators and pundits with one or two exceptions. Leroy Rosenior I find articulate and knowledgable and the aforementioned James Richardson and his motley crew of accomplices on the European Football Show are all excellent.
However for me the one whom I always enjoy listening to is John Helm, the veteran Yorkshireman. It always seems right that a northern accent commentates on Bradford City or Barnsley. In addition, I will never forget his articulate and compassionate commentary he delivered whilst covering the ill fated Bradford City v Lincoln City match at Valley Parade on May 11th 1985.

I grew up listening to firstly Keith Macklin, sadly no longer with us, then John Helm. Both great commentators with very different styles. Always watch the FA Cup final and England- Scotland game on the beeb which meant David Coleman.

I like commentaries by Jon Champion and Martin Tyler and Motty , when he's on. As for radio then Bryon Butler was the top man.

John Helm is a fine man. He is actually a Bradford Park Avenue supporter who takes a genuine interest in the club. I have been at Horsfall in the past when he has sponsored the match and invited celebrity friends along; the late John Peel and Angus Loughran (Statto from Fantasy Football).
In more recent years, he has been a guest presenter on Radio Robins, Altrincham's internet commentary, when we have played BPA and has given the task the same level of respect and seriousness, doing all the necessary research, as he would for any top division game.

Every Wednesday on Talksport between 1pm and 4pm is hardly unearthly... he's always a guest of Hawksbee and Jacobs.

James Richardson was presenting BT Sport's coverage of the National League game between Sutton United and Leyton Orient. A new direction for him as he normally specialises in European football. Think he is still presenting the European Football Show.

You did not really need the "football" in that last statement.
