Longest time between Re Visits or Reply Privately

I attended the Chelsea v Brentford game at Stamford Bridge last Sunday. My only previous visit to the Bridge was on 5/4/1969 when Burnley won 3-2 in Division 1. By my calcalations that is 43 Years 10 Months and 17 Days between visits. Anyone been longer between revisiting a ground?

I am sure someone will beat this, and given another 8 years without visiting Staffod, I may one day do so myself.

Never thought about it before but my longest would be Bloomfield Rd Blackpool. Saw a game v Wallsall in October 1986 and have never been back.

Surely you need to go back again for it to be a revisit?

Anyway, I can't match that. My parents hadn't met 43 years ago.

My record so far is 16 years, 9 months for Stalybridge Celtic. Been past the ground plenty of times in the gap, but never paid it a visit.

Unfortunately both games ended with a late Stalybridge winner. A side I'm yet to see lose :(.

Re: [sandhurstbee] Longest time between Re Visits or Reply Privately

As this is a thread for really OLD people, i shouldn't be commenting. At the moment i'm around the 25 year mark with a lot of grounds. But my aim is to go back to Old Trafford on my 61st Birthday, 50 years after my original visit. Plan A was to make this my 500th revisit, i'm on course, but it's going to get a lot harder once i've exhausted everything within a reasonable distance from out here on the Costa Del Suffolk.
Thats if i'm lucky enough to get to that ripe old age.
I'm expecting "The Wall" to make a comment on this thread, i'm sure he told me the other day about a very long gap between visits to Mollyboo.

Sorry Barry, you were obviously a late starter !

Molineux was first visited on the 23 April 1961 where as a 14 year old saw a Maurice Cook hat-trick secure a 2-4 Victory for Fulham. It was my 20th League Ground !

Re-visited on 27 November 2012 for the Match with Millwall some 51 1/2 years on, a 0-1 result so yet to see Wolves Win or even earn a point at Home !

I could beat this if I ever re-visit Peterborough as saw them earlier in 1961 in their 1st League Season !

What gets me when looking at my early grounds is how many can not be re-visited. Of the first 20 grounds I went to, 12 are no longer in existence. Stafford which I mentioned as my one and only visit was in 1976 was ground 37. There are two where the second visit was in 1977 but a third visit has not been made

This is an ageist thread as it discriminates against those of us who are too young to have put big periods of time between visits. For what it's worth, my record was set earlier this season when I went to Norwich City 21 years and one day after my previous visit.

Of my first 20 grounds visited 8 are no more (no 23 has also gone) all except Derby's Baseball Ground were revisited, one has been rebuilt (Wembley) and 2 or 3 could well be built on in the next year or so - Pressed Steel and the cricket ground next door (I have seen Pressed Steel and a number of other clubs play on these grounds in theory 3 or 4 pitches but to me 2 grounds) and Banbury.

Of the others 7 out of 8 had been revisited on a regular basis, though the league ones not in recent times. The odd chap out being Hibs where I visited as a very young lad back in 1972 while on a Caravan holiday in Scotland. Still have clear memories of the game and day out including where I stood in the ground and a high tea in Princess Street later in the day. The Caravan was parked at Mussleburgh Rugby Club.

I love posts like this. How about these for my first few grounds: Feethams, Durham City (Old Ferens Pk), Roker Park, St James Park (could revisit that I suppose, some may say its a tick given none of the ground I first went to in 1975 is still there!), Meadowbank...

Because all this I would say that Carlisle would score quite highly if I went back there (but only as a multiple revisit which is a bit of a cheat), and genuine revisits in the sense that I only went there once, Brandon Utd would be a high scorer last visited in 1989. Of grounds I have actually revisited once I doubt I could get more than about 10 years or so.

The Caravan was parked at Mussleburgh Rugby Club.

I also do not require that caravan park!

Or just a kid Eddie Tongue - Don`t apologise I knew someone would beat it, just hadn`t realised it had been so long until I thought about it. Mike (Henfieldbee) - Yes it had changed a bit since my visit. I went to Preston earlier this season and that was also like visiting a new ground as all 4 sides had been developed since my last visit in the early Eighties.

I think you might have recognised the current East stand, which was built circa 1972.

Despite its relative closeness to where I live, I have not returned to Cheshunt since my visit there for a Herts Charity Cup game on Saturday 8th August 1981 (all other grounds previously visited have either been demolished or revisited since then) and so this will break my own record gap if I do revisit it one day.

Re: [Chris1963] Longest time between Re Visits or Reply Privately

My longest gap between revisits is St James's Park. Went in about Jan 1995, Newcastle v Leicester City, as a student in Newcastle, on a borrowed season ticket. Revisited last summer for an Olympic game, Brazil v New Zealand. So 17 and a half years in between.

I would top this by some way if I go back to St Andrews, last visited watching Altrincham as a kid in the FA Cup in the mid-80's (ground no 3 for me). A bitterly cold but magical night. No plans to revisit though, more than enough grounds to visit first time yet.

Hope to revisit Underhill before it goes this season, 21 years since my one & only visit in March 1991 with Runcorn. Visited Peterborough United last season in Oct 2011, 18 years to the day after my first visit in 1993 so that's probably my longest gaps between visits.

As I am only 45 I can not yet claim to a winning margin so have enlisted my dads help. He is at a creditable 44 years (1961-2005) for Queen of the South of all places and has not been back to Fulham since 1961.

I see an opportunity however as he last visited Hartlepool in 1955 and on the basis of this forum I am going to take him some time soon. That would be 58 years and only a three hour drive away. Not sure if I can claim a father son combination, I went to Harlepool in 2008 for my only ever game. 53 years between a family visit.

Re: [Chatham Docker] Longest time between Re Visits or Reply Privately

Meant to check for some time, but now done so

My first visit to Dundee was 5th September 1970, for a match v Aberdeen. Closest I have since got was when I went to Dundee United

Second longest is Celtic, with my first visit in January 1970 (as an alternative to Sutton United v Leeds United), and my second and last visit being in September 1970 for a European Cup tie against a team from Finland

Longest time for an English ground will be Southport, with my second visit in the mid 1970's

When I started hopping, Frickley Athletic was the first ground I visited (as my mum wanted to go back to the area where she grew up and her father worked in the colliery) in September 1983, for a game v Yeovil Town. I think Ian Botham was in the Yeovil squad that day.

Not quite at your level Sandhurstbee, but I'm still catching you up in age!

I went to Charlton Athletic 1 Nottingham Forest 1 at The Valley last night, my first trip there since ticking it on 11th March 1995 with Charlton Athletic 1 Portsmouth 0. That is 18 years, 6 months and 20 days.

Re: [jrev61] Longest time between Re Visits or Reply Privately

Further to my post of Feb 28th, I did a revisit to Cheshunt for a midweek league game in August, creating a record gap between visits of almost exactly 32 years.

The record for the club I have not been back to for longest is now Hungerford Town, whose one and only visit by me was on Saturday 13th Dec 1980. This was quite unusual as I travelled to and from the game by train from my boarding school in Newbury. I might not have done it but for the fact that the game kicked off at 2pm, probably because Hungerford's opponents that day (it was an FA Vase game) did not want to play under lights and this fitted in neatly with train times, even allowing for the possibility of extra time.

Most of my early visits have either been re-visited regularly or demolished. I'd be in with a shout if Poole ever go back to the Dolphin Stadium (if it still exists?) - went in 1977 while I was on holiday in Bournemouth.

He's not on this forum but when I took my Dad to Wolves to watch Wimbledon (he's a Dons fan) in 1998, he casually announced that the last time he was at Molineux was in 1950, 48 years back.

Personally, the biggest I could get is if I went back to Peterborough. Haven't been since 15 Feb 1986. After that it'd be Aldershot, Gillingham and Fulham in 1987.

Re: [Chapeltom] Longest time between Re Visits or Reply Privately

A new personal record set for the longest time between revisits, after last night watching Spurs 3 Nottingham Forest 1.

My previous visit to White Hart Lane (complete with The Shelf and Archibald Leitch grandstand) was on Saturday 2nd April 1988 for Spurs 0 Portsmouth 1. That makes a time between visits of: 26 years, 5 months and 22 days.

I'm another with a long gap between visits to Stamford Bridge.

13 Feb 1982 Chelsea v Liverpool FA Cup
22 Sept 2010 Chelsea v Newcastle League Cup

A mere 28 years 7 months 9 days.

Just because you're paranoid, it doesn't mean they're not out to get you.

I have just seen your 'golden oldie thread' and it got me thinking. I went to the 1966 cup final at Wembley and did not go back (for football) until last season Trophy final.48 years a ground with the same name but not the same ground.

Re: [ceefaxbrian] Longest time between Re Visits or Reply Privately

I marked another long gap between revisits last Sunday, when I went to watch Portsmouth Ladies 5 Coventry United Ladies 1 at Privett Park, Gosport Borough FC.

I used to be a regular visitor to Privett Park back in the late 1970s/early 1980s, when good behaviour on visits to relatives living nearby would be rewarded with an afternoon watching The Borough (I can just see Splodge's face aghast at such a thought! Tongue), but turns out this was my first return since a Gosport Borough 0 Portsmouth 2 pre-season friendly fixture on 2nd August 1989 - a length of 26 years, 1 month and 4 days. Lots of work has gone in to making the ground fit for Conference football in that time, but it's good to see the old wooden stand and wooden plank bench seating still in place.

I finally got round to sorting my spread-sheet to see what my record might be were I to do re-visits which in general I don't.
Most of my early grounds are long gone or league grounds re-visited for away cup games with the mighty hammers

Haringey 1960/1 is the oldest left followed by Plymouth in 1961/2 and in 1962/3 by Welling Blackpool and Ebbsfleet

Perhaps I should re-visit one of these to set a record of at least 54 years!

andrew c

or maybe leave it another 5 for a 60 year anniversary re-visit to Haringey

I'm sure as soon as someone tries to break The Wall's record, he'll go back to Peterborough to take back his crown, he's keeping that one in reserve having visited there before his 53 year revisit to Wolves. But while I'm here. I'll throw in my International revisit to the Bernabeu on Saturday, 42 years 63 days. That just leaves 2 grounds where I could beat that, Old Trafford and St James Park, all the others were revisited years ago, or no longer exist.

Good question young Andrew

After Peterborough 3.12.60 as a Schoolboy whilst for the following 18 years I played Saturday Football and subsequently with 3 Kids was unable to pursue my travelling instinct and effectively saw mainly mid-week in the London Area, so many revisits. Next Best

Bristol City 26.02.74
Feyenoord 29.05.74
West Brom 05.09.75
Mansfield 08.03.76
Hereford 10.04.76

4 against Millwall plus Spurs in Rotter, my first Overseas

Saving Peterborough for a Play Off Game

Still trying to catch you up, Sandhurstbee!

Last Wednesday I went to Petersfield Town 1 Northwood 0, my first return to Love Lane since attending Petersfield United 2 Portsmouth 2 at a pre-season friendly all the way back on Tuesday 5th August 1986.

I make that a gap of 29 years, 7 months and 18 days between visits.

Putting that into a bit of context, on that evening back in 1986, I got my teamsheet signed by the then-manager of Portsmouth, none other than Alan Ball, while he was stood on the steps outside the Love Lane clubhouse during the match. This would have been a mere 20 years and 6 days after he'd played for England in the World Cup Final on 30th July 1966!

Can't remember the exact dates, but 23 years and a few months between visits to Histon. I saw City win the county cup in April 1989 but had moved away from the area long before we next played there. My next visit was in the early part of 2013/14, for a City home game early in our ground-share there.

As I discovered when researching my answer for the thread on the first few grounds visited, most of my early visits are no longer available to revisit. Turns out the current longest without a revisit but still in use is Barking (early part of 89/90).

Tuesday night was my second (and unfortunately almost certainly my very last) visit to Griffin Park, for Brentford's 1-0 win over Nottingham Forest.

My previous visit to the away end was to see Portsmouth lose 1-4 on Tuesday 1st September 1992, a length between visits of 23 years, 11 months and 15 days.

Barry will be very pleased to know that that gives me a record of 100% home wins for Brentford!

The longest time since a last visit to any ground that still exists is Hastings, where I saw Barnet draw 0-0 in April 1979. Can't say its on the immediate list to re-visit, though I might one day.

In my grounds list no's 1 to 27 I have either revisited or are now defunct. So ground no. 28 is the one that offers me my potential longest break between visits......
Lewes 5 Addlestone & Weybridge 3 @ The Dripping Pan in 1977 - It's all of 11 miles from my doorstep! Maybe I'll wait for 40 years to elapse and make a re-visit. I understand the ground is slightly changed since I went!
NB Bognor Regis Town is next a few weeks afterwards

nb: i will only post re new grounds when BurgessHill Bee doesn't..(since he's far better informed than I)

Re: [Henfield Bee] Longest time between Re Visits or Reply Privately

My current post in Hampshire has mean several 30 year plus revisits, but Stafford Rangers remains my longest possibility if I were to revisit, as it has now been over 40 years
All the other 46 grounds visited more than 40 years ago have either been revisited, or are no longer available to revisit (or in many cases, both).

I have recently passed the 600th ground to be revisited.
I now have 21 grounds with more than 10 visits. Of these, there are 8 which cannot be visited again (9 if you count old and new Wembley as different venues). 19 of the 21 are in England, the other two in Malaysia.

30 of the first 50 grounds on my list cannot be revisited now. Plus of course, "Ground zero". I know I visited Barking's old ground as a child in the company of my grandfather, but it is not on my list as I do not know the game, and anyway I would have spent more time watching the trains behind the ground than the match

Bristol City remains my longest possibility - last there on 28 December 1965 when the new floodlights opened. After that there are a couple that I haven't been back and still exist that are over 40 years - Elland Road and Old Trafford [at the latter for Leeds United v Chelsea FA Cup Final Replay].

As regards non-league several in the 30 plus years category; Minehead being the longest at 38 years.

I have just checked my records and my one and only visit to Dundee, at Dens Park, was 5 September 1970 for only my second Scottish match.

That means almost 46 years, with no prospect of me ever going back.

In England, my longest time since my last visit is Workington. First saw them in March 1971 at home to Newport County, the bottom two in what was then Division 4

Saw them again when Halifax played there on 28 August 1976, when the game ended 1-1 in front of a crowd of over 2,000.

I love posts like this. How about these for my first few grounds: Feethams, Durham City (Old Ferens Pk), Roker Park, St James Park (could revisit that I suppose, some may say its a tick given none of the ground I first went to in 1975.

I too remember Feethams (Darlington). I think houses are built on the football pitch now. Whilst trying to get my Class 2 for football refereeing I ran the line there for a pre season friendly between Darlington and Rochdale.
But getting back to grounds that ?I have never been back to I went to watch Darlington away at Crewe’s Gresty road in the second round of the FA Cup in 1966/67. They lost 2-1 and we never saw the Darlington goal as when a steam engine went past the smoke drifted over the pitch. I make that just over 52 years.
They also got to the quarter finals of the league cup during my team supporting days. Read a book on football grounds once for the football league clubs which described the facade that you went through from Victoria Road as the twin towers....the only twin towers that Darlington would ever see........the author was wrong on that one. Went past the old ground just last week and the twin towers are still there.

I recall watching Chesterfield beat Halifax 2-0 on a wet and windy evening ( round about 68-69 I think) and last Sunday I saw the Spirites go down 2-0 to Grimsby ( a gap of about 50 years) but of course at the spanking new Proact stadium, Saltergate having long gone.
