Tony. or Reply Privately

Just had an e-mail from Tony. Not good news I am afraid.
He has asked me to post the following messages on the board

"The latest prognosis is that I will only last 3 or four more weeks.

When the time comes, my son Stuart will email you to tell you that Iíve gone. He will then email you again to let you know funeral and donation arrangements."

Nothing I can add to this really. I hope it is more than a few weeks before I have to post again.

I APOLOGISE UNRESERVEDLY TO EACH AND EVERY PERSON ON THIS FORUM WHO HAS FELT LET-DOWN BY MY INIMICABLE AND DEPLORABLE BEHAVIOUR OF OCTOBER 28th. 2009. ESPECIALLY TO BRIAN, WHO IS A MARVELLOUS GENTLEMAN AND IS THE LAST PERSON HERE WHO SHOULD HAVE TO PUT UP WITH SUCH UNDESERVED PERSONAL CHARACTER-ASSASSINATION. LET IT BE KNOWN THAT A PRIVATE PERSONAL APOLOGY WAS SENT, BUT WAS SEEN INSUFFICIENT. FAIR ENOUGH.

Re: [Isaac] Tony. or Reply Privately

Well I hope you can live your final weeks of your life in peace.

Despite not being a groundhopper, and not ever having met Tony, I am one of the highest posters in total number of posts on this board. There is a reason for that, mainly because of Tony Kempster.

Going back towards the 2003-2004 season the big restructure as we now know took place in the close season of 2004. I don't think anyone knew for definate about what was happening, even the Ryman League were still appealing it come February 2004.

Tonys simple explanation of what was likely to happen, made it easy for I am sure a lot of AFC Wimbledon fans to understand the restructure. I can't really speak on behalf of all AFC Wimbledon fans, and I haven't asked them, but I am almost certain that was the case.

When the message board was added in 2004 to the site, it gave the website the chance for us to all say what we want about non league. Yes we don't always agree on everything, but it would be a bit boring if we did. The fact is how busy this board is shows how successful it is. I have heard Tony say himself (on radio) that the quality and quantity of messages surprised him.

I am certain as well that Vienna1964 will continue the good work with the new website. I haven't really thanked him yet either so thanks Vienna.

And of course thanks to you as well Tony.

Ditto to what everyone has said.

May your last few days be as lucid & painless as possible under the circumstances.

Cancer is a bastard illness, & has only recently touched Dulwich Hamlet, with one of our loyal fans having a routine check at the age of 60. He had an operation which was supposed to be 'routine' which would cut out the 'small abnormality' they found, but on cutting him open they found he was riddled with cancer, & he would have died a painful death if he had not gone to the doctors. Sadly they could do nothing for him. He slipped into unconsciousness, & passed away under heavy sedation, hopefully not feeling any pain.

What I'm rather clumsily trying to say, as I'm struggling for words, is that somehow, through the Hamlet losing our friend Robert, I sort of feel closer to you, even though I never met you. I hope it's a little comfort for you to know that we are all thinking of you.

You are a very special man who has enriched my life so much through this forum. I thank you for that from the bottom of my heart.

Cancer is indeed a "bastard illness" and I lost a good friend in similar circumstances a couple of years ago.

I would just like to ask members to consider making a donation to one of the many cancer related charities.

One thing I would add to anyone making a donation is that to be sure you mention its in memory of Tony Kempster. Cancer charities get loads of donations a year and its all worthwhile, but if you mention someone personal, they usually add it up to see how much is raised in memory of an individual person.

Towards the end of this year my company (a classical music record co) will be making a CD to benefit MacMillan Nurses, as a thanks for the help and support they gave a wonderful young'musician. I certainly don;t want to use this site for any form of promotion for business, which would not be ethical at all, but if we can also with the money raised, pay tribute to Tony's work in running this site for some time while unwell, that would be heartening too. And I just want to add my many many thanks to Tony for this site, which made me feel like part of a real community.

I have found this website and forum thoroughly informative over the past 9 years.

Previously I have not signed on because of the distance involved, but have enjoyed reading the message board.

The knowledge I have gained regarding non league football through this website, has been immeasurable.

Great man gone. I hope this won't be seen as intrusive, but I'm sure many of us who didn't know Tony personally would like to know more about how he came into his great enthusiasm. Or maybe that's one of the beauties of his work? I have no idea where in the country he lived or who he supported, or even if there was one club or league in particular.

Ever since I found this site,
I thought of Tony when hearing
that song by Golden Earring -
Quiet Eyes*.
Teary Eyes more like perhaps,
for many on Ear @ this sad time.
Echoing all other posts, thoughts
are with Tony Kempster's family
and all forum users.

*It had Tony in its lyrics.

As will be the case with many others, I never met Tony or came across his efforts outside of this website. However, it sums up the impact he made upon football in this country that he is so well known. Even in Scotland, at nearly every ground there will be someone familiar with his name or activity. While I appreciate the sadness that undoubtedly defines this news, it is also tempered by the knowledge that his work - his passion - and his legacy, will live on.

Very sad news. Tony has left us on a weekend where 25 of us have been away on a "hop" in Sweden. All of us who went on the trip know each other through our common love of non-league football, most of us post on this website, some of us wouldn't know each other without this site.

Bringing people together through one shared passion - that's some legacy.

Thanks, Tony. RIP.

A Top man. A Gentleman. And now, maybe, the patron saint of Non League Football.

Earth will be a worse place for his departure, where he has gone will become a great place for his presence.

Tony will surely be up there now looking down on us and hoping we will think of him each time we log on here or stand at a ground on a cold wet Tuesday night, he now has the grandstand seat and will enjoy all games he choses to watch.

I doubt anyone that follows Non League football will have missed using this site on more than one occasion.

A tribute to Tony great influance on the game is that one almost EVERY club website forum he has been mentioned and mourned but many thousands of fans.

I hope his family, at the terrible time, can find some happiness in the fact that Tony was loved by many thousands or people worldwide for his dedication, commitment and love of the game.

Tony Kempster - You will live forever in all our hearts and minds.

As one of those who counts themselves lucky enough to have met and watched a game with Tony, the fact that this news was expected any day now does not make it any easier to read.

As numerous other posters have already stated, this site has done more to bring football followers from various parts of the country together than any other venture.

RIP TK, you are already sadly missed.

Re: [Frank Hughes] Tony. or Reply Privately

I shared several emails and the odd phone call with Tony when he was helping me put together a case to the UniBond league two years ago, that an East/West split at ULD1 would prove to be wiser than a North/South version. I was focussed only on the need to help my club Colwyn Bay, and even though I changed my request several times, Tony was patient with me and gave me hints in a way that only dawned on me later. I had promised to buy him a pint at our ground when it coincided with a visit of his to the snooker in Prestatyn; sadly that won't happen now.

So sorry, although obviously not too surprised to hear the the sad news. I never met or spoke to Tony but like so many will miss his contribution to football, and in particular non-league football. His name is surely one of the most well known in non league football, and he'll certainly be sadly missed by family friends and goodness knows how many up and down the country.

I remember when I stumbled across this site many years ago I couldn't believe my luck! It was just what I'd been looking for at a time when I was just getting into non-league footy and for that I'm grateful to Tony and his endeavours over the years. RIP.

That's exactly how I felt. And the more I looked the more I realised I'd hit the jackpot. Now it's unusual for me to go more than a day without logging on. I've also met people on the basis that they post here. For example I started talking to Veteran, APL and Collier Row at a match with the question "Are any of you lads Kempsterites?" I'm sure many others have similar stories. I doubt if he realised how much he brought people together.

He will be greatly missed. RIP Tony.

A man whose labour of love single-handedly reignited my passion for non-league football. A man I have never met, but whose death has made me cry.
Have a safe journey, wherever you may be.

Can't really add anything different to what has already been said but...

I hope you find peace Tony and thank you for providing a wonderful site - your devotion to the non-league game was second to none.

You'll never be forgotten.

One of life's good guys. The world is a poorer place without him.
