Recruiting for The 2009-10 Prediction League ! or

Recruiting starts here and now for our next AGF's NLPL - the 2009-10 season edition !

http://www.nlpl.co.uk/PredictionLeague/index.php

Indeed, I'm starting the recruitment drive pretty darned early for what I hope will be the biggest and best-est competition yet !
We need all of you and your friends, acquaintances, colleagues, etc. to enroll for the grandest non-League Prediction League game on the net !

What we really need for the 2009-10 contest is a big increment in the number of competitors and likewise a boost in the loyalty of those who do compete.
In the 2008-09 season edition we had seventy players, of which about thirty competed the season through... and we'd like to multiply those figures ten-fold in the new season's tournament !

I operate this Prediction League; just like Tony does the Forum; as a labour of love - and it is completely free to enter - and boy, do I work my socks off to bring you a comprehensive admixture of fixtures upon which to test your predictive skills !
I would thus very much like it if more folks were to enter and compete, thus providing me better satisfaction for my labours.

It ain't easy !!!

The 2008-09 season competition set 1000 fixtures throughout the season, including matches from Steps 1 through 5 & 6, plus selections of games taken from every round of the three national knockout competitions involving non-League clubs.

The (Loose) Rules

1]. I will publish fixtures more or less as described above and I will endeavour to aim for seven days' grace between my publication of such fixtures and the day/time that the relevant matches are to be played - although my absolute guarantee is 24-hours' notice in the occasional extreme.
I promise that I will not willfully cause any player to be negatively affected by my timing and no match with less than 24 hours clearance will be retained in the game. Such examples as may seem to occur from time to time will be voided, deleted and replaced.
I did have a small number of 'interferences' in my planning of the game in the past season - some personal illness, a death in the family and one or two pc &/or ISP connection problems - so all players should be affably capable of defending themselves against the 'shit-happens fairy's possible occasional appearances, OK ?

2]. I am hoping to introduce a few changes to the system for the new tournament... for a start, I am seriously considering altering the format in such a way that we have eight to ten mini-seasons instead of just the single long one - allowing for more folks to earn themselves kudos throughout the year. Further; and to the same end; I am also evaluating the pros and cons of dividing the competition up into discrete sections (Divisions) in each monthly/four-weekly mini season - meaning that throughout the whole length of the tournament we will have multiple kudos winners at differing levels, about which I can report regularly on Tony's Forum (basically, right here).
In order to achieve these improvements, I will be asking for reliable volunteers to assist in my Administration - anyone so interested please PM me here.

3]. I will issue each fixture chosen, with a short code preceding the first-named (home) team to indicate from which competition the fixture has been taken - these should be quite obvious to all concerned and will use 'proper' League names and not sponsorship names at all. If anyone fails to follow a particular code, just mention in the sites Shoutbox and someone will surely fill you in ! Some play-off fixtures & other knock-out matches are played out on neutral territory and there is consequently no home/away difference. I will usually list teams in such matches alphabetically, however this is not a guarantee !

4]. No correspondence about fixtures chosen will be entertained, beyond the usual suspects:~ where I have inadvertently duplicated a fixture; I have entered a fixture incorrectly or with a clerical error; when a fixture has been postponed/rescheduled and I have not yet registered this; etc. Mention of any of the above occurrences is sincerely appreciated ! I'd hope that covering this aspect would be integral to the post of Administrative Assistant !

5]. I will endeavour to update the site regularly, several times per week and I will occasionally issue 'statements' which will be sent to all folks through the system via their registered email addresses &/or in the official Shoutbox &/or here in Tony's Forum.

6]. Each prediction may score either 3, 1 or 0 points - dependent upon accuracy. 3 points is awarded for a completely correct scoreline prediction; 1 point is awarded for a correct prediction of the H/D/A result, without getting the scoreline entirely right and 0 points will be scored in any other circumstance. 3 points gives you a 'Win', 1 point gives a 'Draw' and o points; naturally; gives a 'Loss' in the Table.
Note please that I am also considering changing the scoring system for the 2009-10 season's game - there will be more news about this possibility closer to the kick-off... it may involve ten points being available per game - or not ! We'll think about this anon.

7]. Goal Difference is established by looking at the individual score-predictions for each team. You will score goals for by correctly guessing a team's score in any given fixture. Any difference between the number of goals guessed and the actual number of goals scored by a team in any given fixture will go into your goals against column.

8]. Over and above the fact that we will be generating some rather large numbers eventually in the Points, G.F. & G.A. columns, League placings will be determined by those factors which one normally takes into account for such purposes in real-life Leagues... Most Points, then highest Goal difference; then most Goals for. I think (but cannot guarantee) - the next discriminators would probably be Most Wins, Least Games played and lastly Alphabetic order.

9]. Any player presented with a problem such as failure to be able to log in, failure to get the program to run properly on the pc &/or similar - preventing one from fairly continuing to compete - will be allowed to email myself at my home email ([email protected]) or instead PM me here on the Forum and if they include a listing of their preferred selections in that email and it reaches my Inbox prior to the actual starting time of the matches concerned... I will be pleased to allow these selections to the game. I am able to enter them 'after the fact' as needs be. In all such cases, proof of posting will not be considered to be proof of delivery and I will not enter into discussion about any failure of delivery which might disallow one's entries !
Please note that this service is meant to be 'occasional' and to be used only in case of distress. I shall reserve the right to ignore habitual users of this service, should I come to believe that they are taking the P*SS !
Obviously, genuine folks need not be overly concerned with this, if you inform me of any problems which you might be having with connectivity - I will always attempt to help out as best I can. A little information could go a very long way in this regard !

Note further that there is a 'default score' utility available to be used in this game. You simply enter this in the requisite section under 'My Profile' at the beginning of the season... and every time you notice new fixtures being added (which could possibly be 'odds & ends' added late to previously 'done' weeks), just go to each week's predictions using the drop-down menu and hit the >PREDICT< button for that week, before continuing to the next week's fixtures...

10]. There are no specific 'special arrangements' within the game to cover for players' holidays, beyond the default score utility. However, if folks give me sufficient forewarning, it may be possible for me to organise the 'priority' input of fixtures for these periods - meaning 'several weeks', not 'three days' generally speaking ! It works on the principle that if you enable me, I am better set to enable you by return !

11]. I do intend to keep overall prediction records for the game on my pc, so it will be possible at the end of the season for folks to be able to completely compare scores, once I publish.

12]. There are no actual physical prizes for competing in this game... however, should someone wish to offer something that might be nice to win - be sure to let me know and we can make suitable arrangements. If anyone is in a position to 'pull' a small sponsorship out of a hat, then also feel free to let me know.

Please note that due to all the work which will be involved in replacing Tony's statistics/results site, the previously mentioned changes to the NLPL will be unlikely to occur for the 2009-10 season.

Last season for a first timer I was doing quite well until relying on my Default Score
for a few weeks, then I tumbled down the table, I shall not be using 1-1 during the
2009/2010 season that's for sure.

Count me in for another season Angus, I am sorry this old git is unlikely to become
computer literate enough to help out otherwise I would.

Re: [MOUNTAINEER] Recruiting for The 2009-10 Prediction League ! or

A word to the wise re: default scorelines...

You'll realise that because there is a person having to pick the fixtures that the selection may never accurately be deemed random. However, I do try my very best to randomise as much as is possible - within the limitations of the 'programme' used to ensure equality in the number of picks for each team per season.

Without getting too technical I assign a fixed number of fixtures per division at the front end of the season and then for that divisaion I divvy out the fixtures between clubs to ensure that no club appears in the game any more than once more than any other club !

That is the plan for League games only - as in Cup competitions it's rather easy to end up with a small number of teams becoming super-used - if one has serendipitously chosen a winner/finallist/etc. in early rounds, then that/those teams will obviously figure more times than others ! This would be obviously the case should I decide to operate a 'Road to Wembley' Cup selection pattern (again) where I follow a team from the earliest rounds until it gets k-oed and then continuing with their victorious opponents until they also lose... ad infinitem up until the final.

Anyhow - I'm digressing - what I'm saying is that my selections are generally not too far from being random over the course of the season, so the very best default value to use is naturally the one which is the most likely result from a 'random selection'... and that is 2-1 to the home side !
