Tuesday 19-02-19 8 pm

Thoroughbreds - 39 Norfolk United White - 44

Norwich Indoor Winter League Division 1

UEA Sportspark

Just spectating at this game, expecting a close contest and by and large it was White led 10-7 after first quarter and 25-17 by half time, TB had closed the gap to 34-30 by three quarter time and despite closing the gap to three at times White won by five goals.

Tuesday 19-02-19 9-10 pm

Thoroughbreds Mustangs - 41 Phoenix - 30

Norwich Indoor Winter League Division 3

UEA Sportspark

Acting as a scorer for this game, the original allocated scorer had changed teams during the transfer window and was now playing on another court at the same time. As with the earlier game a close contest for a lot of the game, early on it was goal for goal before Mustangs made it 9-6 at the end of first quarter, Phoenix had narrowed the gap to one goal by half time. Mustangs started to get on top by three quarter time (30-25) and won quite comfortably in the end.

If I'd made an effort I could probably have managed to take in a 6-50 pm game as well.

Norwich City Flyers - 16 McCarthy - 42
Friendly
City College Norwich

Another NCF friendly to umpire, an easy win for McCarthy who run 4 teams and this was a bit of a mixture but included several of their best players. McCarthy 11-3 up after first quarter and 19-9 by half time, then at three quarter time it had become 30-14 and finally a score of 42-16.

Tuesday 26-02-19 7pm
McCarthy - 28 Norwich City Flyers -24
Friendly
City College Norwich

Another friendly between these clubs, with McCarthy the home side this time as they already had the court booked for training. My first game as umpire in 2019 for various reasons, I think it is nine weeks or so since my last one the above game. A closer game this time with McCarthy starting the better of the two sides and NCF taking control in the middle before McCarthy battled back to win. Quarter scores 9-5, 14-17, 17-22, 28-24.

Ipswich - 42 Norfolk United2 - 40
East Region League Division Two

Acting as scorer/timer for Norfolk United. Ipswich had the better of the first quarter (13-9) and stretched their lead by half time (22-16), NU pulled back a couple of goals by three quarter time (33-29) before a real battle in the last quarter NU came right back in to it and led 40-39 with around two minutes to go before Ipswich recovered to win by two goals.

Norwich City Flyers - 20 Hotshots - 26

A closer game than the December friendly I umpired between these teams. Hotshots led 12-8 after first quarter, NCF then pulled it back to 14-12 by half time and after a drawn third quarter it was still quite tight at 19-17 before Hotshots went on to win by six goals.

University of East Anglia Women - 16 De Montford University Women - 2

Colney Lane

Decided to try out a game of lacrosse today, despite only having a very basic understanding of the game. However it wasn't too difficult to follow. An easy win for the hosts, though DMU did have better of the second quarter. I understand this was the first time that UEA had staged two home games at the same time and as a result a lacrosse pitch was marked out within the american football pitch, which I expected would be used for the second team's game but the first team used this pitch. So I may need to return to tick off the usual lacrosse pitch at some point.

I'd planned to watch football as UEA women's seconds were due to host Birmingham City University seconds on the main pitch as none of UEA's other 4 sides were at home. On arrival for the match no sign of any football activity, I had wondered earlier whilst running as no corner flags were out, they usually are well ahead of kick off. So once it was obvious my intended match was off and only a few minutes until the only remaining match at Colney Lane was due start I then opted for.

Wednesday 06-03-19 2pm
UEA Women seconds - 3 University of Nottingham Ladies fourths - 6
BUCS Midlands 3A
Colney Lane

Very unexpectedly I found myself ticking off the main lacrosse pitch, for a game I'd almost certainly not have considered otherwise. Not a bad game to watch, UEA took the lead in the first minute then Nottingham came back to lead 2-1 by the end of first quarter, this had extended to 4-1 by half time, another two goals in the third quarter had made it 6-1 before a couple of late goals for UEA gave a final score of 3-6.

HORSE RACING

Musselburgh

Admission - Free (Kelso Membership Reciprocal)
Programme - 3
Food - Salmon and Cream Cheese Roll 4, Cherry Bakewell 2.20 (both excellent in Cafe 1816)
Attendance - 1,027

A low key card but some decent close racing and a chance to chew the fat with a fellow Kelso regular. He gave me a bit of background on the management shenanigans at Musselburgh which almost lost its license to race last year, but now seems on an upward curve. I enjoyed this day's racing as much as any in the last year.

I was able to double up with football at 3 (Colney Heath). The match was second v third and close game looked very likely, Thunder had won the reverse fixture at the start of the season 58-51. A very close first quarter went 16-15 in Mavericks favour, after which Thunder gradually took control leading 30-28 at half time, before establishing a decent lead by three quarter time (45-38) and then taking their lead out by a further goal by the final whistle.

Sunday 17th March 2019

After my Sunday morning football in Worcestershire, I headed north for a rare hockey game.

OLTON & WEST WARWICKSHIRE 2-1 FAREHAM
(English Mens Hockey League Conference West)

@ West Warwickshire Sports Complex, Solihull
Adm / prog: none

When I arrived I checked it would be ok to take photos, and with this I had my first attempt at photographing the sport.

The game saw the hosts win this encounter with a last minute goal - disputed by the visiting players and supporters. No idea why as I did not see / know what offence had supposedly occured.

An enjoyable afternoon and hopefully it will not be too long before I photograph the sport again.

Thoroughbreds Mustangs - 33 Norfolk United Blue - 75
Norwich & District Summer League Division One
Hellesdon Community Centre

Opening week of the summer league and I went along to see what I expected to be a decent contest. Blue who were loaded with Premier League and National Performance League players were far too good for a Mustangs side who weren't short of decent players themselves. Blue 20-7 up after first quarter and 35-17 by half time. Blue kept pulling away in the third quarter (50-25) before really pushing home their advantage in the final quarter.

One of the umpires for this game, they had planned to play 6 x 12 minutes but that wasn't quite possible with the court booked until 8-30. So it was 4 x 12 minutes, then an 8 minutes "quarter" and finally 7 minutes to finish. Close game throughout and UEA hung on to win by 3. "Quarter" scores 3-4, 9-12, 12-17, 19-22, 22-29, 28-31.

Gaelic Football:

Bit of advanced notice of London's big football date of the year.
Their Connacht Senior Football Championship quarter final against Galway has been fixed for Saturday 5th May at 3.30pm. Ticket details are likely to be announced soon. There are usually tickets on the day, but they can be bought in advance too. I would expect it to be in the region of 20 for an adult ticket.

Venue is McGovern Park, West End Road, Ruislip, just on the north side of the Polish War Memorial roundabout on the A40. The E7 bus stops outside and South Ruislip station is only a few minutes walk away.

Should the frankly unthinkable happen and London win, then they would face a trip to Sligo in the semi final (Sun 19 May, Markievicz Park, 3.30pm). Far more likely is that London will get an outing in the first round of back-door Qualifiers which are slated for Sat 8 June. In recent years London have hosted any first round qualifier, but I don't know if this is a fixed thing or not.

Hurling:

London will once again compete in the Christy Ring Cup, the third tier competition. Home fixtures are Round 2 v Roscommon on the weekend of 18/19 May (details tbc) and Round 3 v Kildare, Sat 1 June at 1pm at McGovern Park. Round 1 is away in Meath on 12 May. The semi finals and relegation play off will be on the weekend of 8/9 June and the final on the 22 June.

More immediately I think I may roll up to Ruislip tomorrow for the Ronan Cup final (hurling) between Thomas McCurtains and Fr Murphy's (throw-in 2pm).

Sunday 24-03-19 1230
Norfolk United - 71 Kent County - 49
Mizuno Premier League Division Three
UEA Sportspark

I was shadowing the NU scorer for this game, the score sheet for this level requires far more information than even the level directly below it and is the one used up to and including international level. This was with a view to me covering games next season as this was the last game this season.

As for the game it was a comfortable win for a clinical NU 23-7 up after the first quarter, and gradually pulling away with a half time score of 39-19 and by three quarter time 55-30, Kent trimmed the lead after easily their best quarter to end up at 71-49.

Bonus on the Romanian ground hop- "Football in Heaven 3"
Told it was sold out but Emmy our great guide got us 'standby' tickets which meant sat behind the hoops till we spotted an empty seats, great set of ultras and constant noise and singing. Both teams had a number of Americans in their side. Home team started on top but after a few minutes fell behind which was a surprise as it was 1st against 3rd. Visitors easy on top as home team kept missing 3 pointers.

Five minutes to go the ultra side got very angry not sure if it was with their own team or fans on the 'bench' side who did not sing - however with just a couple of minutes left, home side who were 12 points behind then woke up! And with seconds left got to within one point to then give away a late penalty shot. Great finish to the game.

Full house and just a short walk back to the main square and a few beers.

great bonus to the trip

Saturday March 23
HORSE RACING
Kelso
Admission - Member, Programme - 2.50

ITV Racing paid their second visit to Kelso in their current incarnation for the meeting featuring the highest prize money in Kelso history. A pleasant sunny day and the ground drying out to Good from the Soft that had been reported earlier in the week. I've been attending Kelso regularly for 12 years and this has been by far and away the driest winter in that time, the ground having been Good or near to Good at most meetings.
Competitive Close 2 handicaps were the feature on an entertaining card. SOME CHAOS won the staying handicap chase holding off an improving animal in Blue Flight. Locally trained CLAUD AND GOLDIE won impressively in a much lower grade here last time and put up an excellent effort finishing a close third.
Improving novice hurdler WINSTON C came from well back to mug Champagne City on the line in the feature two mile hurdle. The second ahs solid form at the top level in handicaps this season so form looks solid.
Biggest cheer of the afternoon was saved for Lucinda Russell's ALIZEE DE JANEIRO as the mare won for the sixth time at the course, five of those in the current season. She stayed on strongly top win comfortably and now is now retired to serve as a broodmare. She was lapping up the attention post-race in the winner's enclosure.

Next race meeting for me should be Kelso on April 8th, then the point-to-point at Balcormo on April 20th, though the latter desperately needs rain in the coming days if they are to get many runners.

Myrtle Beach Pelicans 2-8 Frederick Keys
Carolina League (high A baseball)
Attendance: 3,554
Admissions: $13
Prog: 8 pages, free, plus free team sheets available

Back on the baseball trail after a quiet 2018 - last year it was only the one spring training game at Bradenton, Florida to watch the Pittsburgh Pirates. A very good old ballpark btw, having been upgraded over the years, and my second favourite in the Florida State League behind Daytona Beach.

But back to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, which I think could be described as a 'traditional' holiday resort. Plenty of free parking at the ballpark, then straight to the ticket office where we were told that most sections were sold out, although we still managed to get seats just off-centre from home plate.

Unusually, the announced attendance looked like it matched the number in the stadium, and this helped give the park a lively atmosphere. Seating runs from third base to first, but an unusual configuration means that the sections nearest those bases are covered but the seats behind home are not. There's a further section of bleachers in the outfield.

Concessions were along left field and under the stands, which help to give the park a big league feel. The souvenir shop was particularly well stocked and food options were greater than you'd normally find in the minor leagues. I didn't check the beer options as we had a 2 hour drive after the game.

Tonight's promotion was $2 tacos from a local Mexican restaurant but there was a long queue and they didn't look anything special, so I gave it a miss and opted for pulled pork nachos from the regular concessions which was both plentiful & tasty.

The game itself was mostly settled by a 4-run 4th inning from the Keys. Trailing 5-2, the home team rallied in the 8th and had bases loaded with only one out, but a double play ended any hopes of a comeback.

All in all, an enjoyable visit to a well-run and friendly team playing out of a well-maintained ballpark.

Charleston RiverDogs 7-1 Greenville Drive
South Atlantic League (low A baseball)
Attendance: 5,346
Admissions: $10
Prog: 16 pages, free, plus free photocopied game notes

The ballpark is not too far from Charleston's hugely picturesque downtown which meant parking was a big problem as this game was an 1105 start. Parking lots that would normally be available in the evening were completely full, so we ended up driving through residents-only streets before finding a space at a Publix supermarket.

Tickets were again in short supply so we ended out in left field, although the actual attendance was some way below the announced figure. The early start was down to this being an 'Education Day' where hundreds of school kids are given free tickets, filling seats that would otherwise be empty but it also means that many season ticket holders can't attend, so many purchased seats remain unoccupied.

As expected the first half of the game was played out to a high octane background and with massive queues at the concessions, but school groups started to disappear from as early as 1215 and by the time we reached the last three innings the park was mostly deserted and the only sounds were coming from the field.

The park is attractively designed with seating extending out to left & right field. Most seats are uncovered, those behind home and out to first base having executive boxes rising immediately behind, but the seats near first base are covered.

Food options weren't as extensive as Myrtle Beach the previous evening, just standard ballpark stuff. The programme advertised fried chicken & waffle pieces covered in honey, but I didn't see it on sale, and there was also a BBQ area with some interesting options, including ramen, but this was closed, presumably because kids only want the usual fried output. There was a good selection of perhaps as many as ten local beers on tap, but again this was closed. Anyway, nothing appealed on the food or drink front, so $15 remained in my wallet.

On the field it was pretty decent with plenty of players connecting although Greenville never looked like recovering once they went behind.

Red Knights - 54 Thoroughbreds Foals - 34
Norwich & District Summer League Division Two
Sewell Park Academy

First games back after the Easter break of the summer league and I went along to see what I expected to be a decent contest, between North Sea Netball and Norfolk United Amber who had both won all their games so far. However on arrival I was asked if I could score the other game if the allocated scorer didn't turn up, there was less than 10 minutes before start time at this point. I said I would and began the game as a scorer but I only had to cover for 3 minutes. By this time I was committed to this match, which was close for ten minutes before RK gradually increased their lead through out the game, quarter
scores 14-8,28-14,40-23,54-34.

Watford FC supporter hence the name also follow Hull FC but rarely get to see either these days.

Have now visited over 800 grounds, progress in recent years has been rather slow and will continue to be as things stand.

Rome Braves 1-0 Lakewood BlueClaws
Wed 24 April 2019
South Atlantic League (low A baseball)
Attendance: 2,022
Admissions: $10 ($2 discount if bought in advance)
Prog: $5 for a 60 page half-season glossy affair with photocopied roster insert, or $1 for just the roster

A 1030 start at this one, which brought a modest number of school parties, though small enough not to distract from the baseball. Those present witnessed a rather quick game at only 2 hours 10 minutes, with Lakewood failing to take advantage of their 9 hits in this inter-division contest. The visitors, incidentally, are based in New Jersey, a 14-15 hour bus ride from Rome, Georgia.

Rome is a small community with seemingly not much around it, about an hour north-west of the Atlanta suburbs and not too far from the state line with Alabama. It's the kind of place that makes you wonder both how they managed to bring a team here and keep it here. I wasn't expecting a great deal but have to say I really enjoyed the welcoming, home-town atmosphere which was different to the suburban feel of many ballparks.

I thought the park was pretty smart with comfortable seats and pretty much all seating between third & first bases, and a picnic area beyond first base and grass banks along left & right field, though it didn't look like you could walk all the way around the outfield. The seating was also partially covered by a small roof which provided welcome shade on a sunny day.

Food options were mostly confined to the concourse under the stand and options were pretty standard, although they did include a Chick-fil-A outlet. Some remained closed, including the BBQ area, as did all beer outlets.
