It took them years and a relegation to eventually replace Sir Matt, I doubt history will be repeated, but the new man will need a big broom. It can’t help knowing that Arsenal and Chelsea have made such excellent appointments recently.

Matt Busby stepped down in 1971 and it was Tommy Docherty that took the club down to Division 2 at the end of 1973/74.

As I said, it took years to replace Busby, unless you consider Docherty an adequate replacement for the great man, Busby wasn’t properly replaced until Fergie came along, IMHO.

While their least succesful period was immediately post-Busby, leading to relegation in 1974, United were then competitive in most seasons between regaining their first division place and the appointment of Ferguson. The first few years of the SAF reign resulted in lower achievement than the post Ferguson managers, but he was given time and money to recover. Time that none of his successors were given.
If football history starts with the Premier League, then United are the most succesful team and the current period is the nadir of their fortunes.

Although it was the Doc that relegated Derby, he had a very big hand in itMad

There is a property management company in Sale, on the main road south from Old Trafford, which still has a non-ironic advert in the window for "In need of new management?" accompanied by a picture of Louis van Gaal looking masterful, which they never felt the need to change during Mourinho's rule. In wonder if they ever will.

That seems a bit unfair. Didn't he take over from Colin Murphy in 1977, more than 2 years after Derby won Division 1, who replaced Dave Mackay who was sacked after a poor run of results. He left in 1979 when Derby were still in first division and were relegated under Colin Addison next season.

I need to have the last word, as it always looks as if I am right !

To be fair to the Doc (something I really don't like doing) he took over a side at Old Trafford that included too many players that were past their best or of limited ability. Also on the scene (intermittently) was a disillusioned and disruptive G Best.

Although he was unable to save United from relegation he put together an exciting and stylish attacking team that stormed back into the top flight and was in the best United tradition.

Then when he was playing away something went wrong with the physiotherapy.

Carlisle United manager John Sheridan has left the club with immediate effect.

Behind the scenes issues sounds the most likely reason.
