Needham Market have withdrawn from the competition rather than face a midweek trip to Weymouth, a journey of 230 miles. I have a certain amount of sympathy for them, part-time clubs shouldn't really be expected to make midweek trips like that.

Rule 1 - There are no rules
Rule 2 - See rule 1.....

A trip they made on Saturday as well for nothing but with £6000 on offer to the winners it is a surprise they have taken this decision.

While one can understand Needham Market's position, have they now excluded themselves from the FA Cup for next season and the season after?

The rules of the FA Trophy set out what a club must do if it seeks to withdraw from the competition, and Needham Market haven't done it. If the FA chooses to take a strict view, it will apply rule (7) (d) and not allow Needham Market into next season's FA Trophy. Not taking part in next season's FA Trophy would render them ineligible for the FA Cup for both next season and the season after.

There are precedents for the FA choosing to overlook such things, but a club hoping for that to happen would probably do best not to criticise the FA in print.

Cannot disagree with Needham in this case.
They make valid points and common sense should prevail.

Equally valid counter arguments put forward by Weymouth: http://theterras.com/...cation-on-fa-trophy/. Just one of those things.
I see the Terras now have a mid-winter trip to either deepest Lancashire or, arguably more likely, Workington in the next round.....what could possibly go wrong..?

I do feel for Needham Market & any fans that made a ten hour round trip, resulting in seeing didley squat. I only traveled two hours to get there, so there’s always some that suffer a worse fate than yourself.

FWIW, I believe the ref should’ve made the call much earlier. Knowing the forecast was for the rain to get heavier as the day progressed (& it did), it really should’ve been an easy decision to P-P it much earlier. The irony here is that tomorrow’s forecast, is for rain most of the day too. Chances are it would’ve been off again anyway, so perhaps the visitors jumped the gun a tad?

Aldershot have put put a statement that they will be fielding solely academy players for the replay at Bedford Town tomorrow.

And that's what Needham Market should have done if they are struggling to get a team out. I don't buy into this' part time clubs shouldn't be travelling these distances in midweek' argument. They are a step 3 club and should do all in their power to fullfil the fixture, it makes a mockery of the Trophy.

As always in these sort of cases there is no excuse for Needham Market not being aware of the rules of the competition they have entered. To then criticise the FA for applying the rules is silly to put in mildly.

For any competition, if you don't like the rules you either campaign (in advance !) for the rules to be changed. or you do not enter. If any pre-competition campaign to change the rules is unsuccessful you then either comply with the rules as they are, or withdraw in accordance with the rules ... not try and get an exemption to something you have signed up for.

Had some sympathy with them until I read the final paragraph and the fact that Redditch United have to go to Needham Market tomorrow night (a 3 hour trip of over 150 miles) and wonder when that was actually confirmed to Redditch.

If the original fixture had been played and drawn then Weymouth would have had to travel to Needham Market on Tuesday night for a pointless replay.

Has there always been (as in previous years) a requirement for replays to be played by the following Thursday? Seems to limit the amount of time clubs have to get players released from work etc.

From now on the draw is no longer regionalised so there could be some considerable distances covered for replays at a few days notice.

If Needham Market suffer any sanctions from the FA then one can only hope that Aldershot are also made to suffer. Sending a youth team to a replay is not in the spirit of the competition. Had Aldershot had a league fixture tonight, would they have played the youth squad?

I completely understand Needhams point here. If it had been a draw on Saturday at Needhams ground. Then I’d imagine they would have traveled to a replay away at Weymouth. However in this case I’d imagine Needhams players might have put their bosses in their FT jobs on alert. However having to walk in on a Monday morning and try and get at least one day off work during a busy time of the year for leave then they might have struggled.

I have to say that a game of this distance with part time players it does ask the question should replays be moved to the midweek after the following weekend? I guess the first few rounds that are quite regonalised would not need this. But as soon as it becomes at least a north/south split then would not allowing more time for a replay be sensible. Would help supporters wanting to attend also.

Have the rules changed in the last few years or is it different for the Vase? Just that I recall Clacton travelling to Christchurch in the 4th round and being rained off. The tie was played the following Saturday, was no suggestion of a midweek match.

Is a shame, I saw Needham v Royston replay in the previous round and thought they could go further.

JJ Hooper (on loan from Grimsby Town) and Luke Coulson (recently signed from Ebbsfleet United) both made their debuts against Sutton United in round one. Most probably one of those.

Some considerable journeys for the original ties, the reverse journey midweek made even more difficult.

Haven't seen any announcements about ties being settled on the day yet (nor would I expect to this late in the competition).
