Bit of a late season cull in the Chippenham & District Sunday League...

Clubs folding...

PREMIER
Athleticow Moodrid
Somerford FC
Melksham Town (Sunday)

DIVISION TWO
The Castle, Devizes FC

That takes it to 7 over the last 2 seasons with no replacements...may need a reduction to Premier, Divisions One and Two only now...

2018-19 Games: 164 Goals: 601 GPG: 3.66 New Grounds: 94

In the Cheshire League, both Tarporley Vics and AFC Macclesfield have announced that they're folding.

In the Montgomeryshire League, Carno are folding their reserve team.

Oh that's a shame.
After their season at Gresford Colliery, i do know they made a real effort with their ground by the hospital and had a much improved team as well.

Curious that they can do that yet Whitehawk were refused permission (can't recall by who) to become Brighton (or Brighton & Hove) City in the not too distant past.

I don't think Reading FC would be as worried about people confusing themselves for a Step 5 club than Brighton & Hove Albion were about an ambitious Step 2 club.

I've heard overseas students saying "Brighton City are in the Premier League" fairly recently, so...

Given that Reading isn't a city, and unlike Guildford or Southwell doesn't have a cathedral which is sometimes mistakenly taken to confer city status in itself, does this qualify as one of the daftest name changes ever?

Well there was a Reading Town in the 1990s so probably could not use that name. Reading Ibis would have been better but 'City' is simply untrue.

Yes, though BHA weren't long out of League 1 when the idea was first raised and Whitehawk's ambitions only seemed to stretch to reaching average gates of 1,000. Anyway, correcting myself, it seems Whitehawk dropped the plan themselves after opposition from their own fans, rather than being refused permission. Although BHA were being particularly arsey about it... I agree it's doubtful Reading will be the same, not least because of the misnomer in using the word 'city'.

According to a tweet by Lostock Gralam, Tarporley are just dropping down to the Crewe & District League instead of folding.

I'm a little suprised that they've changed their name, but hopefully it can be of some help for them to get a more established support within the town. I doubt too many round here know where Highmoor is, and those that do probably wouldn't expect a team with that name to be playing in Reading. I agree that Reading Ibis would be a better name as it's unusual, but does reflect the history of the club.

Chelmsford managed to be a City club long before city status was conferred there, and given the current rate of awarding city status surely it will happen eventually. Though whether Reading City are around to see that day is a different matter. I hope they are (or the current way of awarding city status is changed).

So they are based in a city which doesn't exist - brilliant !

If they do this well, it'll hopefully lead to more people attending football at Scours Lane. And that can only be a good thing for non-league football in the town and in the Hellenic.

A statement much along these lines made on the Hellenic website today, by club chairman Martin Law...

As it happens, on a visit last season I bought a Highmoor Ibis FC tea-mug. And only two weeks ago I handed it over to TheWavendonian as a birthday present. The jammy sod - it's probably a collector's item now, and he'll be flogging it on the next Antiques Roadshow!

Are there any clubs retaining a Town in their name that are now cities.
Derby is not a County, though I believe the FA refused Derbyshire County as a name, the club was formed as an offshoot of the cricket club. The FA thought his would cause confusion

Presumably not as there are Guildford City and Brechin City FCs (any others?) based in towns that do not have city status.

Brechin was historically a city, Guildford was regarded as a city for several hundred years as it has a cathedral.

So although, neither has city status in the present day they have a history of being at least regarded as cities in the past. The same is true of Southwell (due to its cathedral and the diocese) and Rochester (who lost city status due to an apparent administration/clerical error 20 years ago).

Reading has never been considered a city, informally or otherwise, it has always, always, always been a standard English town!

There is no forest in Nottingham, I have not come across any moors in Solihull recently, Newport is not a county, none of the various Wanderers or Rovers seem to do any wandering or roving any more and there was precious little athleticism on display in Oldham last season. I suggest this argument is a red herring. Smile

Chelmsford City FC called themselves this for many years even though it is only recently the place achieved city status

Manchester is definitely not united, neither is Oxford to name but two

Grimsby doesn't have a team in Grimsby

West Ham United are neither united, nor are they in West Ham now or ever were.
