Huddersfield Town Can't Post or Reply Privately

Last season we had a Leicester City thread during their will they won't they win the Premier League season. As we are now in to October and things are settling down a bit we can see how the various leagues are shaping up. This seasons surprise team, and we all probably have different opinions on this, are Huddersfield Town. So a new thread for a "Will they won't they win promotion to the Premier League in 2016/17".

Nigh on impossible to compare what City achieved last season with anything. Huddersfield? Smaller clubs have gone up in recent years so not sure it would really be a surprise if they made it come April/May.

I certainly wouldn't compare the achievement of Leicester City to Huddersfield gaining promotion. In picking Huddersfield I considered their recent season performances and based on that they wouldn't have been on the list of many people to be promotion contenders. Whether they are being bank rolled this season or, like Leicester, it is one of those seasons when everything just seem to be right, they are surprising people by leading the Championship (at the moment).

And if they can stay there and finish above the likes of Norwich/Newcastle/Villa/Blues/Wolves and take their place in the sun then what a great story that would be but it will take some doing. Long live this thread!

Dean Hoyle has got a bit of money behind him but we've sold players in previous seasons and never spent it (or not much of it), or players we've sold have been sold again (like Jordan Rhodes) and we've got a percentage of the sale. Wagner's signed a lot of players this season, but our expensive signing was £1.8mil which was Schindler who scored the winner today. I knew we wouldn't finish in the relegation zone like one football pundit predicted, but it's been great to see that we're doing well, it's just a case of will we carry on until May. I haven't decided yet if I want us to get promoted or not.

I am, especially this season, it took us until the 28th December last season to get 25 points. I'm shocked but not surprised at the start we've made.

As long as we get about 50 points before it does (and clear of relegation and ahead of Leeds), then that'll be okay ;-) (ps: nice avatar)

Indeed, I'd love to see Bradford promoted again, last time we played you (in the league) was 2007 so would be great to play you again!

(I do, IQ are one of my favourite bands, I've been to a few of their concerts in Bury over the last few years Smile)

I'm a massive IQ fan! I go to Bury every year, and in fact most UK gigs they play. Seen them more than 20 times. Would have loved to have been at Chepstow tonight, but I don't really do festivals, and it would have been far too expensive. I'll be seeing them at Islington in Dec as usual, then Bury in Jan, Bilston in Apr etc etc

Anyroad, back to the footie. Yes, it's looking good for us so far (and you as well, he says grudgingly), so I'm hoping we get at least one derby next season. TBH, L**ds is the big one for us, but we'd be happy to renew our "friendly" rivalry with your lot Wink

Nice! I only go to Bury these days but I think I've been to at least one a year, the first time I heard them live was in 2004 with Dark Matter. I didn't know they were in Chepstow tonight, shows what a fan I am! I'll be going to Bury in January.

Yeah, I did wonder what would happen when Parkinson left, but you've certainly started the season well, would be great to see it continue. Yeah, I'd like to see Sheffield United promoted too, would certainly be some nice local derbies.

You start a thread to follow a team that is doing better than expected and they promptly lose. Over 22000 watched the terriers go down 0-1 at home to Sheff Wed. Huddersfield are now 3rd in the Championship, a point behind leaders Norwich.

Do you mean team playing in the Premier League or playing in the top tier? If the latter then both Brighton & Huddersfield have played in the old Division One, in fact Huddersfield have won the title 3 times.

Seeing as 47 teams have played in the Premier League, I guess it's clear that the previous poster meant, as he typed, Premier League not "top tier".

The football league has written to Huddersfield to "request their observations regarding team selection" for Saturday's 2-0 defeat by Birmingham City. The FL have stated that the result will stand and any punishment would be directed directly to Huddersfield. Whatever the FL decide then they have to sort this out before the final round of games.

Blackburn Rovers and Nottingham Forest must be seriously unhappy over it. Mind you, with play off spot already assured, the Huddersfield reserves and fringe players may have been a lot more motivated than the regular first teamers would have been.

And that is the maximum that will be handed out and Huddersfield should appeal it if that's what's decided. A club looks after it's own interests and should not be held accountable for the failure of others.

If you are allowed a "squad" shouldn't your team line up be permitted to come from within that squad?
Who is say what a weakened team is, would be very hard to draw a line and say one player is better than another for any given game.
If Chelsea drop Eden Hazard for a game, and he is considered by many to be their best player, is that not fielding a weakened team?

My thoughts are that as long as you don't bring in any new players by transfer or promoting from reserves for any one game, then who ever is in the squad and has a registered number should qualify to play.

Congratulations to Huddersfield.

Wednesday's turn to suffer the trauma of taking on Huddersfield in a penalty shoot out. Frown Sheff Utd still bear the mental scars of losing the 2012 League One Play Off Final to the Terriers on penalties despite Town failing to score any of their first three attempts. Shocked

Two of the Huddersfield team that beat United that day also took part in tonight's game. But this time on the losing side, as Jack Hunt and Jordan Rhodes were in the Wednesday line-up.

I'ii have a guess at Cardiff City - 1962-2013 - but I will almost certainly be wrong.

I am wrong. Bristol City were relegated in 1911 and returned in 1976

I may still be wrong.

Huddersfield could now be promoted with a negative goal difference, which can't have happened too often

I read earlier that they'd be the first team to do it, and it doesn't surprise me Huddersfield would be the first!

Brilliant performance from the team over the two legs, I still can't believe we won. Would have loved to go to Wembley to watch!

Last seasom in Division One: 1921/22

Next season in top division: 1999/2000

Oldham another one with a big gap:

Last season in Division One: 1922/23

Next season in Division One: 1991/92

A bigger gap than Bristol City, but fewer seasons (I think) due to WWI.

On the evidence of what I have seen of late Huddersfield are playing Reading for the privilege of finishing last in next season's Premier League. Wish I could say different but it's been turgid cr*p from the sides involved in the Championship play-offs.

Even finishing bottom of the PL will financially secure the club for a good few seasons, unless they are reckless, and spend it all (a) trying to stay the PL or (b) attempting an immediate return to the PL after being relegated. Burnley and WBA have shown that by taking a longer term approach, being relegated from the PL can lead to better things a season or so later.

Relegated in 1925/26 and next played in the top flight in 1981/82. So not as long as some.

Well Norwich have already taken a punt on Wagner's successor at Dortmund reserves. Not sure that'll have such a happy outcome though, judging by the guy's track record.

And didn't score as well as the one against Sheffield Wednesday was an own goal! The only goals we did score were the penalties!

Wasn't the best game to watch but still very nervy! Still can't believe we've got promoted, absolutely unbelievable job from Wagner, just need to sign all the on-loan players and strengthen and we might do well. But if we only have a season there, I'll be still happy.

They did struggle in their last season in the first division, not winning a league game from the end of November 1971. I think they will do a bit better than that.

Steve Parish says Palace are looking for a long-term manager and not someone who will treat the club like a 'stepping stone' Surely a few defeats on the bounce and his statement will become a farce.

I must say I thought that was rather comicalSly!

Gary Monk was apparently lined up for the job, or maybe that was wishful thinking, but that trail seems to have gone cold.

EDIT apparently Sean Dyche wants the job now http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/premier-league/crystal-palace-new-manager-sean-dyche-wants-to-take-over-a7767901.html

I admit Dyche would be a great fit for Palace but he would be more than capable to manage the likes of Stoke, Everton or WBA. Mind you he would get Palace into the top half.

Who could forget the self proclaimed "Team of the 80s" ? Massive in their own minds maybe but not in many others - relegated in 1981 in last position with a colossal 19 points and then doing very little in Division 2 for virtually all the rest of the decade before scraping up via the playoffs in 1989.

Saying that, Burnley themselves were the supposed Team of the 70s, only to drop back out of the top flight after three years then down into Division 3 in 79/80.

Well so far I have 2 out of 3 right, with my early prediction in this thread, Brighton and Huddersfield. That means the 50th Premier League team will be Scunthorpe then. Smile

19/11/11 FL Championship Burnley 1 Leeds United 2

It was an entertaining game and I found the Burnley supporters a very friendly bunch. Even the Leeds supporters behaved themselves.

How about Huddersfield's first game of 2017/18 away at Crystal Palace. This was the last game played by Huddersfield in the top tier back in April 1972.

All joking aside i reckon HT will find the going tough but can they survive? Yep sure they can, look at what Burnley achieved albeit second time around. They are similar size clubs in every way. Home form is massive for them and will be the difference between staying up or heading back to Elland Road!

I'll take 17th and staying up on better goal difference come the end of May, after all we won promotion with a negative goal difference! Yeah, I agree with you on the home form, it was key last season. Although I don't go to any games, I don't want to go back to Elland Road!

Looking back, last season Hull City topped the table for longer than Tottenham (who never topped the table), and looking back much further, I believe Carlisle United topped the table early on in their one and only season in the top flight.

But, better to be top than bottom, even after only 1 gameSmile

I saw someone say we were top longer than Spurs have been in the last couple of seasons.

Blackpool were top after beating Wigan 4-0 a few seasons ago.

If Huddersfield look like they'll survive then a number of Chairmen and Managers will be looking out the brown trousers and eyeing the big red panic button.

Huddersfield were supposed to be nailed on certainties for relegation and that meant clubs only needed to find another couple of teams to finish above to stay in the top Division. But if the Terriers haven't read the script and the others are back to finding three worse than themselves …. Shocked

C'mon gents, it's only one game, and against a Palace team whose new boss's aim is to get them playing open football. In other words the same football that the same players tried to play a year ago, resulting in them staring relegation in the face before Allardyce rescued them with something a touch more pragmatic. The honeymoon will soon be over. Mind you, they play the Toon next, so could easily be 6 points out of 6!

Palace couldn't have been that bad if Loessl was outstanding? Hull City beat the reigning champions on the opening day of last season. Burnley did this season....

I've seen them play better let's say, I think under Sam Allardyce it would have been a different result. Ward missed a sitter when it was 2-0, minutes later Mounié scored the third.

I wonder how many Terriers fans are worried that certain 'so called big clubs' are having very poor seasons. I'm sure there manager David Wagner's stock is rising daily.

Wagner looks like he can organise a defence. Might therefore have been quite an asset to Liverpool if he'd joined Klopp's backroom team before he took the Huddersfield job, as was rumoured at the time.

Wagner's a legend, can't see him leaving anytime soon to be honest! brilliant result on Saturday, wasn't a lucky win, Town were the better team. Really happy for Depoitre too, took his goal exceptionally well. Haven't been that nervous watching Huddersfield since late May!

Huddersfield layed into us on the first game of the season like a team of demented Sunday morning hackers, foul upon foul, and eventually Zaha injured for two months, grrr. Wish them nothing but bad now....

It's gonna be interesting to see what happens at the bottom.
I'm still hopeful we can get out of our mess.
We have played well in the last four games, but have only got 4 points from them, two 1-0 defeats.
Still 27 games to go, and we have to play all the teams who I think will be involved, Huddersfield/WBA/Brighton/Swansea/Stoke/Watford.
I think Everton and WHU will pull away, and those mentioned above will be sucked in.

On the face of it, we look doomed, 4 points only, but only 6 adrift of 17th, and with Benteke and Wickham coming back soon, even before the transfer window, I remain hopeful.

Down - Huddersfield/WBA/Swansea.

2018-19 - 112 games (England Wom/Arg 14/6) 325 goals, average gpg 2.90, 35 new grounds, last new - Stade Oceane/Le Havre..
2017-18 - 122 games. 392 goals, av gpg 3.21, 48 new grounds.
New Grounds in 2019 - 14. 2018 - 44. 2017 -44. Grounds in Total - 1207.

Oh dear, did they not play nice? What a shame. Problem with PL football, everyone's always looking for someone else to blame.

We had it with Arsene Wenger on Sunday (ok the third goal was offside), Koeman blaming Steve Walsh and on...

For the record, I'd like to see Huddersfield and Brighton stay up, a breath of fresh air amongst the stale teams (yes Palace, Swansea, West Brom, I'm looking at you)

Fair point regarding the whingeing, it's all too prevalent within the PL

Generally it's the more 'established managers that indulge in such a practice. It's said that it deflects from their charges who have simply played badly. I remain to be convinced of the merit in such arguments.

Thankfully WOY, for all his failings, rarely bemoans our continuing scoring drought. Expectation around Selhurst has been tempered as we again face a season of toil and woe. I too remain upbeat about our chances of survival but its not going to be pretty.

Relegated....Watford/Swansea/WHU

Your biggest problem now will be up front. Had Zaha put away that open goal opportunity on Sunday there's no way we'd have come back. The fact is that all the defensive organisation in the world won't save you from the drop unless your players start converting the opportunites you're creating.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Eh? Stale teams, what on earth does that mean? So on that basis, Man U/Arsenal and Everton should go down? Stale, been in the fridge for donkeys years!

All about opinions I guess, in mine, Swansea have been one of the best footballing sides in the division since they came up, and have great local vocal support, as we have. I'd like them to stay up, but suspect they may be involved in the dog fight this year.

I'll give you WBA though, Pulis who did well for us, but is old school, and grinds out results, usually, with some quite unattractive football!
We have finished over four seasons in an average 12.5 position, not stale enough to be hovering over the bottom three?Tongue

I would agree it's good to see new teams in the PL though, Bournemouth another case in point, but they also went up playing attractive football. IMO Jury is out on Brighton and Huddersfield. I've not seen Brighton over 90 mins this season, and Huddersfield beat us easily on the first game of the season, when our 'short term' manager deployed ridiculous tactics, and Town employed dubious tactics for the first 30 minutes, worked though! it's not making execuses, it's a fact, although a Huddersfield mate at the game had his rose coloured specs on and couldn't see anything but the fact that they had won!

As we are often told, football history began in 1992. Since then Arsenal, Chelsea, Everton, Liverpool, Man Utd and Spurs are the clubs to have played in every Premier league season. I would be more than happy to see these stale teams go down or disappear off to somewhere like China where they can play each other, and Man City, over and over again.

A riotous atmosphere, an interesting term! for use of artificial clappers.
Why did/do you need them? Have your fans not raised it yet with the 'management' ?

I'm old school, I like the use of the human voice, and ones hands for clapping dear boy.
I also cannot stand the Mexican wave and the England band.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Matt, Hmm, personally I don't mind a drum, as long as I don't have to sit near it, and those using them vary the songs (Unlike the England band). There is absolutely no doubt that the Ultras helped improve the atmosphere at Selhurst no end when they first started banging and singing more euro style songs, and are always looking to introduce new songs. However, they have also caused problems with flares and smokebombs etc. I was at Watford when a smokebomb/firecracker went off near me, my god they are loud, and a bit scary!
Ying and Yang I guess. Having said that, when I was recently at the Stockholm Derby, Djurgarden v Hammarby, I absolutely loved the display of flares, and songs, inspired by a drum at the Hammarby end. 2nd stockholm derby I've seen, and the atmosphere is remarkable.

I watched the game on BT Sport and I thought it was the worst we'd played all season. It seemed like we hadn't recovered our energy following the Madrid game four days previously. Although we had a lot of the ball we looked sluggish and our passing wasn't anywhere near its usual standard. I was mightily relieved when Son stuck the winner away.

My opinion of clubs is influenced to a large degree by my experience when I've visited, and because I had such an enjoyable day at Selhurst Park Palace are a side I'd like to see stay up. The exact opposite is true of West Ham!

Not in Burnley they don't! Wink

Phenomenal achievement by Wagner after getting promoted with a negative goal difference. To have sealed it by digging points out at the Etihad and Stamford Bridge must be even more satisfying.

Haha, I'm looking forward to it already! Been a brilliant season (yes, there's been low points but many highs) but to stay up with a game to spare is fantastic.

Some decent signings in the summer and I think we can stay up again. Wagner should get a contract for at least five years to be honest!

Not only that. All four clubs promoted into the National League stayed up too. All the teams promoted to each of England's top five divisions last year have avoided relegation.

Heard it stated somewhere that this is only the 3rd Premier League season when all 3 promoted teams have stayed up.

The attached might be useful.

Your biggest problem now will be up front. Had Zaha put away that open goal opportunity on Sunday there's no way we'd have come back. The fact is that all the defensive organisation in the world won't save you from the drop unless your players start converting the opportunites you're creating.

I entertained my brother and two of his mates this weekend. All Spurs fans.
We were at the game. Thankfully Tottenham shorn of Alli etc didn't make more of their possession.

If only we had a striker!
In Benteke we trust ........

Have you ordered the statue of Woy yet?!

As any Palace fan will inform you, it's never boring following the Eagles!!

Another season full of oohs and arrghs.
In Woy we certainly trust and as for Benteke, he will struggle to make the Belgian WC Squad.

Statues aside, Steve Coppell has a suite named after him in the main stand; he would be top of the list for any bronze rememberance.

I didn't realise until watching MOTD that he is a lifelong Palace fan. Always makes things so much sweeter for all concerned

They say the second season in the Prem can be harder.SlySly

Haha, I'm looking forward to it already! Been a brilliant season (yes, there's been low points but many highs) but to stay up with a game to spare is fantastic.

Some decent signings in the summer and I think we can stay up again. Wagner should get a contract for at least five years to be honest!

Ince moving to Stoke seems a strange piece of business from the point of view of both Town and his career progression. Unsure

He’s a decent player who I’m sad to see go to be honest, he could so easily have got double figures with the amount of chances he had over the season, we’ll see if it’s the right or wrong move over the season! But on the other hand, if we can sign a player with some of the money we’ve got from him that would be good, I’ve seen a couple of players linked that we could sign.

Just as a side note though, the scorers between the two clubs on Boxing Day are now playing for the other team!

Huddersfield would be looking at spending around £30m to £40m on a striker but with increased TV money and the sale of Ince this is probably within their means.

I don’t think we need another striker if DW plays 4-2-3-1 as both Mounie and Depoitre are decent, it’s creating the chances for them that will be looked at when we make signings. Diakhaby can play on either wing, we’ve been linked to Limbombe and he can play on the wing. We may play 3-5-1-1 against the bigger teams, like Chelsea & Man City in the opening two games for example.

I hope Huddersfield supporters enjoyed their 2 season stint in the PL. As for next season in the Championship, do Huddersfield gamble their parachute payments on a quick return to the PL or do they clear out the big earning players and ensure that the club is financially stable?

Re: [Tykeoldboy] Huddersfield Town [In reply to] Can't Post or Reply Privately

Huddersfield are one of the more financial prudent clubs, if you read messages posted by Price of Football.

This befits a team that has played in each of the top four tiers since 2003.

This season is their first relegation since they dropped to tier 4 in 2003.

From price of football, they made a modest profit in 2017/18, offsetting the losses from the season before and allowing some of their historic debt to be repaid
Chairman Dean Hoyle is still £49 million poorer for his ownership of the club.
Less than half the Premier League clubs turned a profit in 2017/18, while no Championship club (of those whose financial results are known) did so.

Huddersfield's promotion was achieved with a much lower budget than most of their rivals, and if they can find astute management again, then they will be able to mount another challenge without damaging their reputation as financially prudent (in football terms, that means no losing more money than the owner can afford to put in).

Fat AND Pompous.
The proof that you can have too much of a good thing
