It's been a long time coming, but fears are mounting for 'Mothercare'...

Mothercare employs over 5000 people in the UK.

Mothercare are to close 50 of their 137 shops by next year, with the loss of 800 jobs...

Poundworld seems to be in trouble and maybe GTL would have been better in having a pop at them with more than an element of truth attached to it.Sly

With all these recent shop closures from large retailers it is bringing back memories of the early 1980's. Time to play The Specials and Ghost Town.

Maybe we should switch to looking out which high street chains won't be biting the bullet. Shocked

I'll start the list

Boots - people need somewhere to pick up their prescription for valium.

Greggs - To grab a snack while on their way to Boots to pick up their prescription for valium.

I understand a number of high profile estate agent chains have concerns about their future on the high street. I was told they are bricking it, purple bricking ir

When a large retailer closes this has a knock on effect on smaller retailers. High Streets with rows of empty shops not bringing in business rates for the local council which effects services.

This can always give charitable organisations the chance to snap up these empty shops but they are normally given the premises at cut rates and as good a job as these organisations do it hardly brings in money to large towns and many say it doesn't look good.

Marks & Spencer and Poundstretcher are to merge; the up market stores are now to be known are Stretch Marks, whilst the cheap and cheerful ones will be known as Pound Spender.

I've seen it with my own eyes Paddy! Ok, not the preceding visits to Boot's and Gregg's, but if you're in town early doors you'll see them standing outside waiting for the pub to open in all their dishevellry. It is, of course, very sad to see people choosing to live like that, but they certainly do exist and there is certainly a level of fact to back up the stereotype.

Poundworld goes into administration.

Perhaps Arron Banks could get together with his pals and relaunch it as Roubleworld.

What does it say about the UK and the UK economy when a pound shop goes into administration? Looks like there are going to be tough times ahead for all but the wealthy.

It says that the pound has been struggling against other currencies. These pound shops (according to the Five Live money presenter this afternoon) source most of their stock from overseas, and the difference in the exchange rates has eaten up all their margin plus a bit more, and with the whole point of their existence being "pound shops", they can't easily do what other shops would do, and put up their prices a bit to compensate.

Poundland charge more than a 1 for things or get manufacturer to make smaller quantities so they can still use the 1 price point.

The economy is on it's arse comparatively, internet sales are being blamed for high street closures. Problem is those chains are also showing internet sales are down too!

I had to pay 2 for 4 blue Bic biros at Poundland yesterday. 4 Black biros were 1. Is there a shortage of blue ink?

Probably a surplus of black biros! Strange how most of us prefer blue to write with but black to type with.
